Robert Eden Handy was part of the detachment sent by Sam Houston to the Alamo, but that detachment failed to arrive before the attacks. However, Robert was among the first people to meet Susanna Dickinson, one of only a few survivors. Robert was able to view the devastation of the Alamo and hear Susanna?s accounts of the battle and the actions of the Mexican Army. Robert returned to Houston and provided first hand accounts of Susanna Dickinson. The fall of The Alamo became the rallying cry ?Never Forget the Alamo?. Santa Anna truly believed this would be the end of the uprising. Little did he or anyone know the resilience of the Texas people.

The end of the first reign of Santa Anna and the retreat of the Mexican Army occurred on April 21, 1836, known as the Battle of San Jacinto. After the fall of the Alamo, Houston began moving eastward while trying to build up his army and supplies. Business man Sidney Sherman with funding by the citizens of Cincinnati, Ohio were able to send the Kentucky Rifle Corp from Newport, Ky. and town cannons from Cincinnati known as the twin sisters.

During the afternoon hours, under the assumption that Houston was still retreating, Santa Anna decided to rest his troops, feed the horses and himself take a nap. That's when Houston attacked. Houston?s accounts state that the battle at San Jacinto lasted a mere 18 minutes. The Mexican army was not prepared for the fire power of the Twin Sisters, the righteousness of the Texas people and quickly defeated. Santa Anna did escape on horseback, but was located and surrendered on April 22, 1863. Texas was now a sovereign nation.

This rifle belong to Robert Eden Handy. It is one of the only known firearms that can be documented to both The Alamo and The Battle of San Jacinto. It has a plaque on the top barrel flat that reads, ?Robert Eden Handy, San Jacinto, April 21, 1836.

The very characteristics or style of this rifle indicate it as being manufactured in Pennsylvania. A heavy barrel style rifle with a 31? octagonal barrel length and in .50 caliber. Typical Pennsylvania silhouette stock and cheek piece with iron furniture and a silver plaque with inscription engraved on the plaque.

The importance of this rifle can not be overstated. This is a very historic firearm that most would see in a museum. To us it is living history. The story it tells by simply surviving is unspeakable. To be able to touch and handle such a piece of history that saw two of the most important battles not only in Texas History but US history is unfathomable. The fear of the men that saw this rifle in battle, the fear but determination of Robert Eden Handy to carry out his duties in the most stressful of times and execute a mission with unfavorable odds. This is history. This is an artifact.
