A Civil War U.S Presentation Grade Staff and Field Officer's sword and scabbard by Francis Tomes & Sons, New York. Circa 1859-1964. 31 3/4" blade. Etched blade with foliate design "U.S." and martial symbols. Ricasso marked "Iron Proof" and "TOMES, SON/ & MELVAIN/ NEW YORK." Gilt brass guard with pierced eagle and U.S. design, Silver wire wrapped grip. Metal scabbard with gilt bronze mounts. 37 1/2" overall. 32 3/4" scabbard. Condition: Repaired break in guard. Chipped tip. Brown patina on scabbard and dents on chape. Provenance: Purchased from Richard Robles on antiqueguns.com in 1999. Estimate: 1000 to 2000
