Historic World War II H.M.S. Mary Rose 1944 Marked Brass Ship's Bell

This attractive World War II era ship's bell is marked for the H.M.S. Mary Rose, which was laid down on 25 February 1943 and was launched 5 August 1943 with the hull number J360. The Mary Rose was an Algerine Class minesweeper capable of handling all manner of marine mines including magnetic, as well as providing light escort capabilities. The ship had two commanders during the war, Arthur Lewis Gulvin from August 1944 to April 1945, and Derek Harold Edleston from April 1945 to 1946. The ship was scrapped in in 1957. These bells were primarily used for indication of time on board ships for much of history, the bell generally being rung a certain number of times to indicate each half hour of a certain watch period. It is approximately 13 inches tall and approximately 12 inches in diameter at the base. It is primarily cast brass with iron mounting point at the top. The mounting iron and letters feature a black enamel finish.

Class: Other

Fine overall showing an attractively aged patina on the brass with a few scattered patches of light oxidation/verdigris and retaining most of the black enamel finish.
