CHIEF WARRANT OFFICER, MARINE GUNNER & WAR HERO, DAVID R. DUNFEE DURING THE BATTLE OF NASIRIYAH. Lot consists of various items that were both captured and carried by Chief Warrant Officer and Marine Gunner David R. Dunfee, whom served as battalion Gunner with the 1st Battalion, Second Marines, Regimental Combat Team 2, Task Force TARAWA, I Marine Expeditionary Force, during Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom. Dunfee, who can bee seen standing on tank in accompanying photo which was taken during this conflict, is one of only 86 Marines to be awarded the Silver Star during Operation Iraqi Freedom, and received his Silver Star for his actions on March 23rd and March 25th of 2003. On March 23rd, while assaulting enemy positions in An Nasiriyah and under enemy fire, Dunfee provided an accurate assessment of enemy actions and directed fire towards enemy positions, knocking out 9 enemy T-62 MBTs (Main Battle Tank) during the assault. Subsequently on March 25th, while the battalion was conducting a Forward Passage of Lines, the moving battalion mistakenly engaged a friendly unit. Dunfee, proceeded to sprint across open terrain between the two units, utilizing voice, hand, and arm signals, to successfully cease the friendly fire. This lot consists of: 1 Republican Guard black Iraqi army beret with a brass emblem of Iraq, 1 green Iraqi beret with an emblem of Iraq, an Iraqi swagger stick, brass trumpet, TT-33 pattern brown leather holster with black nylon web belt which belonged to an Iraqi 23rd Brigade Executive Officer, an Arabic ink stamp, a 100-rd. PKM ammunition box marked “Taken 23 Mar 03/ Battle of An Nas” above Dunfee’s signature and “Gunner USMC”, an AK pattern buttstock and bayonet (right side of buttstock is marked “Taken from A.K. 47/ 23 Mar 03 Batttle of An Nas” above Dunfee’s signature and “Gunner USMC”) with a note card that reads “Captured with Rifle/ An Nasiriyah Iraq/ 23 Mar 2003. Took the stock off the rifle as a keep sake along with bayonet. Couldn’t keep the rifle.”, an NSB-4A mortar sight with transit case marked “82mm Mortar/ Site/ Battle of An Nas/ 23 Mar 03” above Dunfee’s signature and “Gunner/ USMC”, a large map carried by Dunfee of the An Nasiriyah area that highlights multiple events and locations where he captured the enemy equipment in this lot, a U.S. canvas map case marked to Dunfee on the closure flap (containing a map that is marked “Used during training / at Udairi Range Kuwait/ Before OIFI” followed by Dunfee’s signature, a measuring and map navigation equipment, and a 2001 dated “ARCENT- KU RANGE/ STANDARD OPERATION/ PROCEDURES” marked and Dunfee signed manual), a battle damaged gas mask bag marked “This was/ worn by me/ in OIFI. Battle/ damage from Battle of An Nasiriyah wore on my left hip” followed by Dunfee’s signature, a green nylon bag (containing Dunfee’s uniform, boots, and one of his dog tags), Dunfee’s boonie hat, an Iraqi helmet with camouflage net cover marked “Captured/ 24 Mar 03/ Battle of An Nas” above Dunfee’s signature, a 1990 dated “Identifying the Iraqi Threat and How They Fight” pamphlet, a Combined Arms Rehearsal SOP pamphlet, a personally written and signed letter from Lieutenant General Richard F. Natonski in regards to his invitation to Dunfee’s retirement ceremony, a sealed copy of the May 23rd, 2005 Marine Corps Times magazine with “Valor in Nasiriyah Gunner Awarded Silver Star” on page 11, a copy of “U.S. Marines in Iraq, 2003: Bashrah, Baghdad, and Beyond” by Colonel Nicholas E. Reynolds, a copy of “US Marine in Iraq: Operation Iraqi Freedom, 2003” by Richard S. Lowry, a signed copy of “An Nasiriyah The Fight for the Bridges” by Garying Livingston marked “8/18/04” above “To David R. Dunfee, Thanks for assisting in this book and for your service for our country. You did great at “the Bridges” that day” above Livingston’s signature, a copy of “Jane’s Tanks and Combat Vehicles Recognition Guide” by Christopher F. Foss, a “leon” Task Force Tarawa Nasiriyah action figure in the box, as well as a U.S. Molle System Set 1 mini set. framed piece includes a dinar, coin, 3 star shoulder board, a card in Arabic that reads "Do not interfere with coalition forces. Coalition operations forces do not intend to harm or injure civilians", with the second card featuring a photo of Saddam Hussein reading "He lives in luxury and prosperity while your family struggles to stay alive".
