6/12/2008 - Thomas Gainsborough Artwork Brings Mystery and Excitement to the Online Auction Scene

Omaha, NE — June 12, 2008 — Proxibid, a premier provider of live auction webcasting services, today announced that Theresa Taylor & Associates Auctioneering has selected Proxibid as its provider of live Internet bidding for an upcoming auction featuring an eclectic collection of antiques, collectibles, textiles and art acquired over the last century.  The auction will take place Saturday, June 14 at 9:00 a.m. EST.  Pre-bidding for this auction is already available at www.proxibid.com/theresataylor.

This is a large estate auction of two very prominent Canadian families, Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Begg and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Joseph McCleary.  Herbert Begg acquired an extensive private art collection over the years, which will now be available to the public to purchase.  The collection consists of many museum worthy pieces that are believed to bring high dollars.

The painting bringing the most attention in this auction is an oil-on-canvas portrait painting attributed to the infamous artist, Thomas Gainsborough.  Gainsborough is known as one of the greatest portrait painters and a true genius in British art.  His work mainly consists of head, half-length and full-length portraits but his passion is landscape painting.  His paintings are known to bring high prices and are regularly sought after by art collectors.

The reason this painting is creating such a hype is that it is not signed; however, that is not unusual for a Gainsborough painting.  The known history of the piece starts in 1930 when the Begg family purchased it at a London Gallery.  Along with the purchase they received a sales receipt (available for online viewing in the auction catalog) which states that the gallery guarantees the piece to be a genuine work by Gainsborough.  The original sales receipt will be given to the winner at the time of settlement.

“I have been swamped with calls about this painting,” says Theresa Taylor, owner and auctioneer of Theresa Taylor & Associates Auctioneering.  “Collectors believe it is a Gainsborough and people genuinely think that this may be an incredible opportunity to pick up a great piece of historical art at a great price.  I have been told that an unsigned Gainsborough sold at auction in 2004 for $45,000.”

Gainsborough isn’t the only artist featured in this auction, others include Charles Moreau, Carl Henry von Ahrens, John Arthur Lomax, Walter Dendy Sadler, Charles Barque, Oliver Clare among others.  And art isn’t the only high-value item to cross the auction block.  Also included are vintage custom couture clothing, antique furnishings, and glassware, porcelains and sterling pieces dating back to the Victorian, Edwardian and Georgian eras.

Other high value items include a large collection of jewelry.  This impressive jewelry selection includes diamonds, sapphires, pearls, amethysts, rubies, emeralds, platinum, white gold, yellow gold and others.  The appraiser for the estate jewelry, Maureen Trudel-DeCelles, GIA, states, “Here is a collection of estate jewelry that was nearly all custom ordered.  The design work is truly incredible and only the best of gems were set.”
