Notes: .60 caliber, 36 1/4-inch part round/part octagonal damascus barrel with molded banding, gold-inlaid touch hole bushing, London proofs and gold-inlaid touchmark reading: Clark/Holborn/London. Lock marked: Clark. Steel underib. Walnut stock with skip-checkered wrist, engraved steel furniture and horn fore-end cap. Hardwood ramrod.
Provenance: Very good. Metal with dark brown age patina and scattered light pitting. Stock with crack repair on left side and minor wear and marks overall. Action good.
Illustrations: Clark [1785-1840] Had Royal Government contract for flintlock muskets. Made double barrel flintlock holster pistols and cannon barrel boxlock flintlock pocket pistols, also flintlock sporting rifles. Shop in Holborn, London. Later designed and made a combination flintlock and percussion pistol that could be altered to either form of ignition in the field.

Notes: Serial no. 7240, .60 caliber percussion, 30 1/2-inch round barrel; signed on lockplate "Phelps/3 Rood Lane/London" and and on top of breech block "Improved Mont. Storm/Selwyn's/Self Ignition Cartridge." Proofmarks and 25 stamped at barrel breech. Ladder style military rear sight, graduated for 100, and from 500 to 1000 yards. Steel blade front sight. Blued barrel with bayonet lug on right of muzzle. Lock case-hardened and with engraved border, including light decoration on hammer. Varnished walnut stock. Ramrod of unfinished steel. Oak casing with leather carrying handle, the case of partially tapered configuration measuring 52 15/16- x 9- x 3 3/8-inches at widest and thickest dimensions, lined in green felt, brass lift ring inlaid on lid, with brass attachment hooks and eyes. Illustrated trade label of George Forrest, Jedburgh, inside lid. Accessories of leather sling, wood-handled brass bullet mold with sprue cutter, lacquered tin of Whitworth wads, pewter oil bottle, and wo tools with turned wood handles.
Provenance: Fine. 85% finish on barrel, with surface patina, marks. Markings sharp. Stock with nicks, marks and light wear. Old paper label on right side of buttstock. Two small holes near buttplate. Mellow patina to brass triggerguard and buttplate. Blued steel nipple protector on brass chain, with leather lining. Gray patina to cleaning rod. Leather sling with wear, buckle separated. 95% varnish on case, with wear and mars, some chips from wood, the lining with minor stains, the trade label with aged patina, modern, and replacing original label. Leather on handle separated at left end, frayed and worn at right end. Missing case key, screwdriver, nipple wrench, and certain other accessories.
Illustrations: William Mont Storm's patent no. 33,611 covered a breech loading tapered cartridge, the casing of which was made of animal gut. The Selwyn design was a "self-ignit

Double set triggers. Mountings in brass and German silver, including nicely pierced brass patchbox. Curly maple stock with accentuated cheekpiece, with German silver half moon above, and brass reinforcements below. Pewter fore-end cap. Hickory ramrod.
Provenance: Good to very good. Brown and gray patina, pitting to steel, most pronounced at breech. Portion of patchbox loose and needs expert repair. Blank on barrel near sight, from which sight moved to new position. Toe of stock repaired and wood repair at breech by hammer. Replacement buttplate screw and sideplate screw. Pitted bore, with remains of rifling.

Historic U.S. Model 1860 Staff & Field Officer's Sword Belonging To Indian Fighter 2nd Lt. Philip Re

Notes: 31 1/2-inch straight blade of diamond section etched with floral scrolls and patriotic motifs. Standard collapsible clamshell guard with American eagle. Underside of guard inscribed: PHILIP READE/2nd Lt. 3d U.S. Infantry/May 13th, 1867. Standard hilt with wire-wrapped fish skin grip with urn-shaped pommel. Contained in original nickel-plated steel scabbard with belt stud. Drag missing.
Provenance: Fair to good. Metal showing dark age patina. Clamshell guard bent on both sides. Scabbard missing drag and showing surface frosting overall.
Illustrations: 2nd Lt. Philip Reade was stationed on the western frontier during the post Civil War era and saw action against Indians west of Ft. Dodge, at Cimarron Crossing and Nine-Mile Ridge. He led elements of the 3rd U.S. Mounted Infantry against hostiles during the last months of 1867. He had an exemplary career and retired at the rank of Brigadier General. A historic photo by Soule exists that depicts Reade as a young lieutenant, kneeling over a teamster who has been murdered by Indians, scalped, mutilated and left dead on the prarie. Reade was well known among his contemporaries as a very brave and capable officer. A Spencer sporting rifle and cased set of Colt New Line revolvers once owned by Reade recently sold at auction for $67,500 and $73,125 respectively. This sword was recently discovered and was no doubt a part of Reade's estate which became separated from the other weapons at some time in the past.

Rare Pair Of American Smoothbore Percussion Dueling Pistols By Isaac Mills, Brookville, Pennsylvania

Notes: .47 caliber, 9-inch plum brown smoothbore round barrels with integral top flats. Steel under-rib, Breech marked: Mills. Scroll-engraved case-hardened tangs, hammers and locks. Adjustable triggers, Spurred triggerguard. Flamed maple stocks with bag-shaped grips. Pewter fore-end caps. Silver wedge escutcheons. Steel thimbles. Cherry wood ramrod with brass tip. Both contained in modern associated black walnut case. No key.
Provenance: Both are very good to excellent, retaining much brown finish on barrels and scattered vibrant case-hardening on hammers and locks. One example with repaired cracks in stock and light to moderate wear overall. Bores very good. Case very good.
Illustrations: The owner was advised by a gunsmith in Pennsylvainia that the guns were probably made by Isaac Mills in Brookville , Penn circa 1831. This is a note from the seller. My Grandfather was a gun collector. He had a gunsmith and his family as patients. They were from the "Ohio Valley Area". He was, at times paid for his services with guns. The pistols in question were, I understand, acquired in that manner. I would guess he obtained them in the 1920s or 30s. He gifted them to my father in the 1930s or 40s. Dad gave them to me in the mid 50s. In the early 1960s I was living in Ohio and had the pistols cased by a local gunsmith. He told me the guns were made by a gunsmith by the name of "Mills", who made Kentucky Long Rifles. He said has sorces indicated Mills made about 12 pairs of Dueling Pistols in the 1830s. Since they were American made he felt they were rare. Appariently in the early 1800s most Dueling Pistols were made in Europe. The pistols have been in my family for 80 Plus years. Overall, and excellent pair of American duelers.

Left side of frame marked "C. Sharps Pat./Sept. 12th 1848." Double set triggers. Hammer spur bent forward, possibly on purpose to facilitate cocking. Oil-finished walnut stocks with pewter fore-end cap. Weight of approximately 12 lbs.
Provenance: Very good. Gray and brown patina, with pitting, wear. Stocks with light dents, wear, and old cleaning. Moderately pitted bore. Modification to hammer spur appears to have been done by owner to facilitate cocking.

No number observed on 6-inch single-shot barrel, which has blued target rear sight and blued blade front sight. Checkered and oil-finished walnut grips with S & W medallions. Modern walnut case lined in dark blue velvet.
Provenance: Very good to fine. No. 24522 with 90% nickel, some peeling, scattered pitting, light scratches and patina. 70% blue on triggerguard, and 60% to 75% case-hardening on hammer and trigger. Dent to front sight and to rib near sight. Grips with light wear. Pitted bore, needs cleaning. No. 8795 minor spots fine pitting, some fading to nickel, 25% case-hardening on hammer. Fine bore, light pitting in chambers of cylinder, needs cleaning. Grips with light wear and minor nicks on butt.

Notes: Serial no. 756, .36 caliber, 5-shot cylinder with rounded shoulders and stagecoach holdup cylinder roll scene. Top of 9-inch octagonal barrel with standard roll marking of "Patent Arms M'g. Co. Paterson N.J. Colt's Pt." with snake and star terminals. German silver front sight blade at muzzle. COLT within band as part of cylinder roll. Case-hardened frame, the balance blued. 756 marked on barrel breech, bottom of wedge, breech of cylinder, cylinder turning ring, left side of front gripstrap, bottom of frame plate (visible when trigger flopped down), side of hammer, side of trigger, and on buttstrap. Pistol not taken further apart to check for additional serial numbers, which will certainty be found, e.g., on the inside of backstrap. Hammer spur made without knurling. Varnished select walnut grips.
Provenance: Very good. Gray patina, pitting primarily on barrel, with scattered spots on other parts. Some slight scratches, wear. Barrel marking 85% with spots pitting. Cylinder scene sharp. Traces blue on barrel and recoil shield, and of case-hardening on frame. 20% varnish on grips, which have a high sheen. Minor chipping at toe of butt and minor crack on left side at juncture with top of backstrap. Bore fine with light patina. Missing wedge screw. All parts original. Generous amount of dried oil visible when backstrap and grip removed.
Illustrations: Nine-inch Paterson Holster Model revolvers have a lower survival rate than No. 5 revolvers with 7 1/2-inch lengths, due to heavy use by Texas forces, as well as by U.S. troops. Co., Paterson, N.J. - Colt's Pt." Tiny script U.S. Ordnance inspector marking WAT stamped on left side of barrel lug. Number 91 on bottom of barrel, just forward of lug. 934 on breech end of cylinder, cylinder turning ring and its ring bushing, as well as on buttstrap and various internal parts. Barrel lug with expertly inserted Model 1851 Navy lug at bottom, with serial number visible of 41714. Number 4609 on loading lever lug, also from Model 1851 Navy. Addition of loading lever achieved by also adding barrel screw on which lever pivots, as well as latch at muzzle end of lever, and catch on bottom of barrel. Further improving the revolver was the expert addition of a rear sight, dovetailed onto barrel top at breech. German silver blade front sight. Walnut grips. Leather holster of military flap style, with single loop on back, which is stamped 306/22/10.
Provenance: Very good. Gray patina, with pitting. Period alteration to barrel lug, as described above. Period dovetailing of rear sight accomplished at same time. Old repair to lower section of recoil shield, left side only. Head of wedge screw sheared off. Traces cylinder scene, including COLT marking. Grips with wear, including small amount of wood missing at butt. Repair to grip with two wooden pins inserted on right panel. Old repair to backstrap at juncture with frame at position of two top screws. Holster very good, with age cracks. Stitching missing for back loop at bottom.

Illustrations: Note: Engraving appears to be of the period of manufacture, despite the unusual style, appearing as if a combination of the larger American scrolls with stippled background, yet with the flavor of English embellishments. Blue and case-hardened finish, with brass gripstraps and walnut grips.

Stampes on patent marking and over U and S to obliterate signs of latter. Grips revarnished, and with wear, as well as large chipping from left panel. Bends to triggerguard. Blued finish, with case-hardened lever, hammer and frame. Ivory grips of one piece style. Scroll and border engraved by the shop of Gustave Young, with coverage on barrel and lug, loading lever, frame, wedge, hammer, and silver-plated brass gripstraps of each revolver. Each backstrap engraved in script: ?Col. J.T. Wilder.? Varnished mahogany double case, the interior lined in burgundy velvet, with American style partitioned interior. Accessories of embossed stand of arms flask with cross revolvers, blued steel bullet mold (one of handles marked ?U.S.?), two packets of combustible cartridges, one by Colt?s Cartridge Works, and the other by D.C. Sage, Middletown, Connecticut, can of Eley Bros. percussion caps, key and Y-shaped blued combination screwdriver/nipple wrench.
Provenance: Very good to fine. 70% blue, wear and patina. Cylinders with gray patina, light pitting, scenes sharp, 70% to 80%. Safety pins mashed on 507 and most remain unmarred on 528. 50% blue, balance faded. Case-hardening 50 to 60%. Silver-plating on gripstraps approximately 85% with some tarnish. Grips fine, with mellow patina, and with cracks visible on butts. Case very good, with wear, nicks and mars, and cracks in base. Accessories worn, the combination tool with pitting and patina. Partitions need minor repairs, and one partition old replacement. Case missing key escutcheon, as well as one screw from a hinge.

Carved ivory grips with Mexican eagle motif on left panel, on slightly relief carved background panel, the eagle, snake and cactus in high relief. Cylinder marked 5066 with P and H.N. inspector stamps [cylinder most likely was mistakenly stamped with transposed numbers] as the inspector marks and patina appear correct]. Frame and gripstrap with H.N. inspector stamps. U.S. marked case-hardened frame. Walnut grips with faint but present cartouche and marred H.N. inspector mark on butt of right grip. Sold together with Colt factory letter stating: Revolver #50566 left factory in .45 caliber; barrel length not listed; blue finish; Sold to U.S. Government; Delivered to U.S. Government inspector located at the Colt plant; Shipped September 18, 1878. Guns in shipment: 150. No mention is made of incorrect numbering of cylinder. This anomaly was either a typo done at time of stamping or is a later replacement. This is possible as the fonts are not the same as those on the other elements.

Condition: Very good as partially refinished. Retaining approximately 85-90% reblued finish with light wear to relief edges. Minor pitting on ejecctor rod housing and topstrap. Minor fading and flaking to case-hardening. Butt with three tiny indentations present. Grips with minor sun-fading and may be later replacements as bottom edges are proud of the buttstrap. Action excellent.

Walnut grips with rampant colt and Colt factory medallions. Contained in cerise velour-lined walnut casing together with commemorative bronze medallion and framed letter of authenticity. Inner lid with escutcheon reading: "Joe Foss/A Colt Tribute/to and/All American Hero". Joe Foss was a WWII Marine Corps fighter ace, War hero and Congressional Medal of Honor recipient, Commissioner of the American Football League, General of the National Guard, Governor of South Dakota and television broadcaster.
