The rare snake pattern interlocking brass belt buckle with associated period brown leather adjustable belt. This type of buckle was known to have been used by the 1st Brigade Louisiana Volunteers.

Lot Of Five Assorted Original Civil War Bond Loan Certificates And One John Brown Related Print

All examples with multiple chits in increments of four dollars each, totaling $100 for each certificate. All are printed in black and white and were all meant to be redeemed years after the war. Unfortunately for the Confederacy, they lost, making these documents worthless as monetary items but still quite interesting to the Civil War collector. The John Brown print is a black and white photogravure titled: The Last Moments of John Brown, after Thomas Hovenden. From the Paris exhibition of 1889. Size: 9 1/2-inches X 7 3/4-inches. Matted in cream matte suitable for framing, the reverse with printed plate describing the print in detail.
Condition: All are very good to excellent.

Rare Memoir, Letters, And Document Copies Including Confinement At Andersonville Prison, And Civil

Notebook containing cover letter from Claudette Brand Jeffries, great niece of Abraham Carr, explaining the fascination as a young girl of her Great Aunt Helen's hope chest. At that time, in the late 1950s, Ms. Jeffries remembered the contents, including "a uniform . . . some old Confederate money . . . and a stack of old letters that she called the Abe letters." The notebook includes 11 pages of hand-written letters in pencil from Abe Carr, dated from the Soldier's Home, in California, between December 23, 1923 to May 17th 1927. Also enclosed, typed copies of letters, transcribed by Carr's daughter, Helen Ada Stephan, plus a copy of the U.S. Bureau of Pensions certificate, about granting of Carr's pension at the rate of $72 per month, dated June 18, 1924. Accompanied by declaration of Suzanne Brand, about her Great Aunt Helen's hope chest. Also approximately 30 Xerox copies of documents giving information on the military service of Abraham W. Carr. With photograph of Carr in old age.
Condition: Very good.
Notes: Information in the letters likely to be of value to historians as well as enthusiasts of the Civil War.

Portable Document Case With Newspapers And Documents In Cellophane Binders, Totalling 25 Sets

Newspapers including New York Tribune, New York Times, The Evening Mail, The Owosso Argus=Press (Michigan), and various others, of varying dates in 1917 and 1918, as World War I continued on, eventually to Germany's surrender. Several pages with color funnies, like the Katzenjammer Kids, then jumping ahead to early years and nearing the end of World War II. Among the latter papers the Detroit Free Press, The Detroit News, and the Detroit Times. Later papers with front page headlines of "Roosevelt Dead" and "Nixon Resigns." Final two papers are of the New-York Tribune, with Civil War editions of March 28, and April 1, 1862. Each cellophane binder secured by multi-rings to spine, binders measuring 18 1/2- x 24-inches. The papers usually multi-pages, not the front page only.
Condition: Very good. Papers with discoloration due to age, the best conditioned being of 1862.

Lot Of Approximately 90 Assorted Letters From U.S. Navy Submariner Leon B. Carlson, Ss-167 Narwhal

A large group of holographic letters from U.S. Navy submariner Leon B. Carlson to his wife. Most are dated from 1934-1938. Almost all are multiple pages and have original envelopes. Carlson was a member of the U.S.S. Narwhal of Submarine Squadron 4 stationed at Pearl Harbor.
Condition: All showing age wear and discoloration. Some envelopes missing and some torn.
Notes: U.S.S. Narwhal submarine (SC-1) was laid down as V-5 by Portsmouth Navy Yard, Portsmouth, N.H., 10 May 1927, launched 17, December 1929 and commissioned 15 May 1930, Lt. Comdr. John H. Brown, Jr. in command. V-6 departed Annapolis, Md., 11 August for a cruise to the West Indies, returning to Portsmouth 11 September 1930. She trained in New England waters until 31 January 1931 when she sailed for the west const via the Panama Canal, arriving San Diego, Caliornia, 4 April. On 19 February 1931 V-6 was renamed Narwhal and on 1 July 1931 reclassified SS-167. After overhaul, Narwhal departed Mare Island Navy Yard 2 February 1932 for fleet exercises off Hawaii. She returned to San Diego 17 March. After patrol duty along the west coast, the submarine got underway 12 July 1934 for a cruise with Submarine Division 12 until her arrival at San Diego 18 September. The next 3 years she operated as far north as Seattle, Washington, and as far west as Pearl Harbor, which became her home base for operations through 1941. The U.S.S. Narwhal went on 14 war patrols during WWII, won 15 battle stars and was decommissioned on April 23, 1945.

Measuring 2-inches, and weighing 1/2 ounce. Marked on lower curve of buttstock, "Tiffany & Co. Sterling m." Sterling silver, finished in gold. Gold clasp to attachment pin with tiny pivoting lock. Case of cream-color kid leather, gold-embossed on lid, "Tiffany & Co./Fifth Avenue & 57th Street/New York." Gold edge to cover, kid leather hinge, gold edge to bottom, the lining in tan velvet. Accompanied by folded sheet of 3- x 5-inch note paper, on which is written in ink: "Gen. John T. Thompson/made in 1939/Eve Thompson."
Condition: Fine. Uncleaned. 70% gold finish, back showing 60% tarnished from silver. Case with wear, split corners at rear of lid, and some loose edges to kid leather cover.
Notes: Two gold examples of the Tiffany & Co. miniature Thompson Submachine Gun are also known.
