The 1 and last 8 of the date are high, above the bar, and the MM on the reverse are widely separated. The rich mahogany-brown surfaces are essentially problem-free and retain a good bit of underlying luster. Smooth and glossy with ideal visual appeal, a sharp and attractive coin in hand and under a glass. The surfaces are unusually smooth and defect-free, a highly unusual find for this early Colonial issue. With minimal wear and a classic old copper look, this piece will be an ideal type coin for a finicky collector (PCGS # 311),

Lot # 18 1848 Coronet Head Cent. NGC PF66 RB1848 Coronet Head Cent. NGC graded PF66 RB. N-19, Low R.6. Ex: P. Kaufman Collection. A Proof-only die pairing with only about 25 pieces known. This glorious Gem has extremely impressive surfaces overall. The date was originally entered in the die with a sharp slant down to the right. The base of a 1 is recut above, the 4 slightly to the left, and the final 8 slightly below. The reverse has a fine die line on the rim over TED, and this same die line can be seen on all Proof large cents of the 1840s. All of these coins were struck from the same reverse die; either the reverse die was saved from year to year for use only on Proof coins, or all of these coins were struck at the same time, at some later date. This Gem example has intermingled deep crimson-red and blue-purple color over each side displayed in a somewhat mottled manner. It is sharply struck with slight cameo contrast. An important offering for the early copper specialist (PCGS # 1973),

Lot # 19 1856 Flying Eagle Cent. NGC Proof 651856 Flying Eagle Cent. NGC graded Proof 65. Snow-9. The 1856 Flying Eagle cent has been eagerly sought by collectors since the first coins dropped from the dies. Smoothing the path for the abandonment of the familiar large cent, and preparing for the introduction of the significantly smaller coin, the Mint prepared a select distribution of the new coins. Examples were presented to President Franklin Pierce, each U.S. senator and representative, influential newspapermen and officials of the Treasury Department. Some of these were sufficiently impressed to request and receive extra specimens, but all were business strike or Uncirculated examples.
