In the mid-1940s, Fasanella began to suffer from intense finger pain caused by arthritis. A union co-worker suggested that he take up painting as a way to exercise his fingers and ease the pain. In 1945, Fasanella persuaded the UE to organize painting classes for its members at a local college. He was one of the first members to sign up for classes. Fasanella became consumed by art, and left labor union organizing to paint full-time. To pay the bills, he pumped gasoline at a service station. Fasanella's painting focused on city life, men and women at work, union meetings, strikes, sit-ins and baseball games. He quickly developed a style which spoke to workers and the poor through the use of familiar details. Fasanella improvised a quasi-surrealist style, depicting interiors and exteriors or past and future simultaneously. He painted canvases as big as 10 feet across because he envisioned his paintings hanging in large union meeting halls. Watanabe LE Art Mezzotint TWO BODIES Sensual Nude Lot #10136 (Sale Order 37 of 293) "I am absolutely convinced that at the heart of all things existing in this world, there is something very simple and pure which goes beyond the complexity of appearances," says the artist Mikio Watanabe. This conviction, perhaps, is what makes Watanabe's mezzotints of the naked female form so mesmerizing: Title: "Duetto III" ("Two Bodies III") 1994 Mezzotint on Rives de Lin Moulin du Gue paper; all four edges softly deckled Numbered from a limited edition of 90, plus XXX Roman Signed in pencil in the margin LR Sheet: 15 × 22 Image: 5½ × 12½ Very good condition; LR corner lightly creased; readily matted out Certificate of Authenticity Watanabe creates a mezzotint by repeatedly pressing a curved, serrated mezzotint rocker over the surface of a copper plate until has received many thousands of tiny indentations from this tool. This procedure is extremely time-consuming — most of the plates take 70 - 80 hours to produce — but plates made this way yield velvety blacks that can be obtained no other way. After the entire surface of the plate has been roughened, scraper and burnishers are used to raise tones of gray and white. "During the slow process of engraving, as I scrape the burrs that I have incised on the copper plate and then polish it, the sensitivity which lies inside me can be revealed. Giving shape and light to what was before absolute darkness, I try to feel this universe of purity which exists deep inside the human body," says the artist. Some are illegible or partially legible. Most notably, a circular exhibition registrar's label appears in black ink on the LL verso of the panel and reads: "Douane Centrale Expositione." A ghost image of a previous exhibition label appears at the top center verso. Please see the photograph of the verso, taken several years ago, below. The verso is now enclosed behind a dustcover. All framing elements meet current archival conservation standards. A detailed appraisal of the painting, including extensive provenance back to the artist, is included. It is representative of his style, which fits into the category of "Op Art." The art movement was developed in the mid-1960s, when a number of artists became concerned with using painting as a vehicle for conveying optical illusions. Henri Julien Félix Rousseau ( May 21 , 1844 – September 2 , 1910 ) was a French Post-Impressionist painter in the Naive or Primitive manner. He is also known as Le Douanier (the customs officer) after his place of employment. Ridiculed during his life, he came to be recognized as a self-taught genius whose works are of high artistic quality. He was born in Laval in the Loire Valley into the family of a plumber. He attended Laval High School as a day student and then as a boarder, after his father became a debtor and his parents had to leave the town upon the seizure of their house. He was mediocre in some subjects at the high school but won prizes for drawing and music. He worked for a lawyer and studied law, but "attempted a small perjury and sought refuge in the army," serving for four years, starting in 1863. With his father's death, Rousseau moved to Paris in 1868 to support his widowed mother as a government employee. With his new job in hand, in 1869 he started a relationship with a cabinetmaker's daughter, Clémence Boitard, who became his first wife and he wrote a waltz bearing her name. Charles-Franois Daubigny (Paris, February 15, 1817 - February 19, 1878 in Paris) was one of the painters of the Barbizon school, and is considered an important precursor of Impressionism. Daubigny was born into a family of painters and was taught the art by his father Edmond Franois Daubigny and his uncle, miniaturist Pierre Daubigny. Initially Daubigny painted in a traditional style, but this changed after 1843 when he settled in Barbizon to work outside in nature. Even more important was his meeting with Camille Corot in 1852 in Optevoz (Isre). Contact us for a picture of this document. HISTORY: Ferdinand Victor Eugne Delacroix (April 26, 1798 - August 13, 1863) was an important painter from the French romantic period. Delacroix was born at Saint-Maurice-en-Chalencon, Ardche, in the Rhne-Alpes Region of France. There is reason to believe that his father, Charles Delacroix, was infertile at the time of Eugne's conception and that his real father was Talleyrand, who was a friend of the family, and whom the adult Eugne resembled in appearance and character. He was trained by Pierre-Narcisse Gurin in the neoclassical style of Jacques-Louis David, but was strongly influenced by the more colorful and rich style of the Flemish painter Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640) and fellow French artist Thodore Gricault (1791-1824) whose works marked an introduction to romanticism in art. Delacroix's developing technique would prove to be an important influence on others. His use of expressive color profoundly shaped the work of the Impressionist movement. In 1822, his first major painting, The Barque of Dante, was accepted by the Paris Salon and two years later he achieved popular success for his Massacre at Chios. Delacroix's most influential work came in 1830 with the painting, Liberty Leading the People. This painting serves to show the difference between the romantic style of painting and the neoclassical style of Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres. However, the French government bought the painting but officials deemed its glorification of the idea of liberty as too inflammatory and removed it from public view. He was the son of William Newzam Nicholson, an industrialist and Conservative MP of Newark, and Annie Elizabeth, the daughter of Joseph Prior and Elizabeth (nee Mallam) of Woodstock, Oxon. He was a student at Hubert von Herkomer's art school. Nicholson's partnership with James Pryde, his brother-in-law, was conspicuous for striking graphical work and woodcuts-they were known as the Beggarstaff Brothers, and their poster work was significant historically. He was involved in illustrating early volumes from Robert Graves, with Nancy, who was Graves' first wife. He wrote and illustrated characteristic children's books: The Velveteen Rabbit (1922) by Margery Williams and his own Clever Bill (1926) and The Pirate Twins (1929) for Faber & Faber. Adolphe Joseph Thomas Monticelli (October 14, 1824 - June 29, 1886) was a French painter of the generation preceding the Impressionists. Robert Frederick Blum (9 July 1857 - 8 June 1903) was an American artist born in Cincinnati, Ohio, on the 9th of July 1857. He was employed for a time in a lithographic shop, and studied at the McMicken Art School of Design in Cincinnati, and at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia, but he was practically self-taught, and early showed great and original talent. He settled in New York in 1879, and his first published sketches of Japanese jugglers appeared in St. Nicholas. His most important work is a large frieze in the Mendelssohn Music Hall, New York, Music and the Dance (1895). His pen-and-ink work for the Century Magazine attracted wide attention, as did his illustrations for Sir Edwin Arnold's Japonica. In the country and art of Japan he had been interested for many years. A Daughter of Japan, drawn by Blum and W. J. Baer, was the cover of Scribner's Magazine for May 1893, and was one of the earliest pieces of color printing for an American magazine. In Scribner's for 1893 appeared also his Artist's Letters from Japan. He was an admirer of Fortuny, whose methods somewhat influenced his work. Blum's Venetian pictures, such as A Bright Day at Venice (1882), had lively charm and beauty. He died on the 8th of June 1903 in New York City. He was a member of the National Academy of Design, being elected after his exhibition in 1892 of The Ameya; and was president of the Painters in Pastel. Coming Through the Rye by Frederic Remington Lot #11915 (Sale Order 241 of 293) "Coming Through the Rye" was Frederic Remington's most ambitious sculpture. It depicts a group of four cowboys on running horses, the men shouting and shooting pistols into the air. Whether the "Rye" in the title refers to the plains' grasses or the variety of whiskey is anyone's guess!
In 1989, a set of 23-part set of plaster molds were purchased from the son of Eric Heikka, an artist and friend of Frederic Remington. These molds still had waxes within them, which we carefully removed and restored over a period of several months. While we cannot say whether these waxes date from the period of Remington's original castings of this piece, there is no doubt that the castings from these molds are exceptionally fine. Our "Coming Through the Rye" is available in a limited edition of 100 bronze castings, each individually numbered and recorded. The Broncho Buster by Frederick Remington Lot #11944 (Sale Order 270 of 293) Frederic Remington created iconic images of the Western frontier composed of Native Americans, cavalrymen and cowboys, subjects he described as "men with the bark on." Nowhere in his oeuvre is the cowboy more celebrated than in his first bronze subject, "The Broncho Buster". Originally conceived in 1895, "The Broncho Buster", depicting a cowboy breaking in a wild horse, was an immediate success, symbolizing all that was triumphant and heroic of the West. By the 1890s, Remington was a renowned illustrator, painter and an accomplished writer. Never complacent as an artist, he wanted to expand his repertoire of talent to include something "in the round as well as the flat." In 1894, at the urging of friends and fellow artists, Remington began modeling a rider mounted on a rearing horse. The subject of the cowboy was always a central and important theme to Remington's work. The artist had written in 1895 that "with me, cowboys are what gems and porcelains are to some others." "The Broncho Buster", a subject derived from Remington's cache of works devoted to the rearing horse and rider, reflected the artist's incredible attention to detail combined with the ingenious rendering of a specific action, intense movement and sublime balance. Remington recognized that his legacy as an artist would be defined by the longevity of his bronze sculptures and in 1895, wrote: "My oils will all get old and watery...my watercolors will fade -- but I am to endure in bronze...I am modeling -- I find I do well -- I am doing a cowboy on a bucking bronco and I am going to rattle down through the ages." Sabre Tooth Tiger Skull Bronze Lot #11962 (Sale Order 288 of 293) Prior to the last Ice Age, the sabre tooth tiger roamed the area that today is Southern California. This tiger was a relentless and skillful predator, hunting camels, sloths and horses.
This fine bronze was cast directly from a sabre tooth tiger skull excavated from the La Brea Tar Pits. This particular skull was part of a set of completely intact fossilized remains pulled from the tar pit in the 1990's. Using the Carbon 14 dating process, this skull was estimated to be at least 20,000 years old. The skull was borrowed and carefully created a mold of it that succeeded in capturing all of the fine details of the tiger's skull, jaws and teeth. It is so lifelike that the jaw is actually movable! Through the use of expert mold-making and "lost wax" casting, we have brought this 20,000 year old sabre tooth tiger back to life as a rare and beautiful work of art.The "Sabre Tooth Tiger Skull" was crafted by the talented artisans using the finest bronze. This masterwork depicts President Abraham Lincoln, General Ulysses S. Grant and Secretary of War Edwin Stanton reviewing Grant's plans of operation for the Army of the Potomac. Dali's painting was itself inspired by a drawing done by Saint John of the Cross -- preserved in the Convent of the Incarnation in Avila, Spain -- that depicts a vision of Christ in ecstasy.
