Panel raiser plane: Meier, St. Louis.

A MEIER & C0. / ST. LOUIS, MO. (1838-72) panel raising plane, or just "panel raiser." 4.25" wide x 14.5" long. Lacks the nicker & its wedge. Single cutter by Ohio Tool Co. Wood has been stripped, so it needs a dose of oil to bring it back to life. Because of that, Good-. ($50-80).

Lot# 103

  SOLD

Broadaxe with graphically-curved handle.

The only discernable mark on this otherwise common 11" broadaxe is a large number 7. I bought it for the graphically curved handle, which is probably largely due to seasoning of the wood after the handle was fitted. Overall fine pitting. Just Good, but with an eye-catching handle. ($60-120).

  SOLD

Wagon wheel hub borer.

A tapered spoon bit for boring wagon wheel hubs. Handwrought, 31" long, the cutting edge tapers up from about 1¾" to about 2½” diameter. Friction-fits into a wooden handle which you supply. Lot# 105

  SOLD

“Champion” Mortising Machine, 1912 patent.

CHAMPION MORTISER / J. LEUKART MFG. / COLUMBUS OHIO / PATD SEPT 10 1912. Mortising machines like this one became popular in the early 1900s for drilling the mortises for door locks. They lost favor in the early 1920s, when electric tools began to replace them. This machine is adjustable for length and depth of cut, and the width of cut is determined by the bit diameter. In use, the bit drops down incrementally after it makes each forward and backward pass. It took me about 3 minutes of cranking to cut the example mortise on which it's displayed. It was a basket case when I got it. It's now in fine, restored condition. ($200-300).

Lot# 106

The face is about 2½" square, the head about 6¼" long. Supposedly came from the mountainous area around Steamboat Springs, Colorado. Good. ($50-90).

  SOLD

Stanley No. 12 veneer scraper with toothing blade and a break.

Stanley No. 12 scraper plane has a toothing blade marked with the low S.W. logo and FINE (fine teeth on the blade). It would rate near Fine except for a break to one of the arms that connects the two halves of the blade holder. If I had half an hour I could repair that with a drill press and a steel pin; you could, too, and would have a nice user. Still, there's the toothing blade...buy it for the blade and throw the plane away, if you wish. ($40-75).

Goodell Pratt hand-cranked grinder.

Goodell-Pratt Company / Toolsmiths on the brass nameplate of this bench-mounted, hand-cranked grinding wheel with exposed, but shielded, gearing. 20 to 1 ratio on the 4" wheel, which does have a very small chip on one edge. Doesn't look like it ever had a tool rest. Someone grabbed the main shaft with a pair of vise-grips to remove the stone's retaining nut, which resulted in some scars on the metal. 92% of the black & orange japanning remains. Runs smoothly, just as fast (or slow) as your little 'ol heart desires. Good+. ($45-90).

A very attractive English badger plane.

D. BROWN is the only (incuse) stamp on this badger plane and it's in the usual location for a maker's stamp. There are a couple of David Browns listed as planemakers in the very early 1800s in the Liverpool area, so maybe this panel raising plane was made by one of them. 17¼" long with a 2½" iron, skewed & canted as usual with these planes. Has a lignum vitae wear strip inlaid along the right bottom edge. This is a really attractive plane (despite a strip of pith between the toe & throat) with a marvelous patina. If you're tempted to try out a British badger plane in your shop, then this might be the one you're looking for. It feels good. Highly recommended. Good+ at the very least. ($60-150).

International CutAwl reciprocating electric cutter for thin materials.

INTERNATIONAL CUTAWL / TYPE K8 Serial #5511 is an electric reciprocating cutter for thin materials--wood, metal, & plastic. It doesn't use saw blades, as you might otherwise expect from looking at it; it uses what look like small chisels of various types (skews & straights mostly, beveled on both edges, 1/16" wide) to chop through the material. The head can be turned & locked in any of 4 positions, similar to a scrolling jig saw. The action is very fast and it cuts through thin material quite smoothly and rapidly. Literature on the Internet hails them as superior for patternwork. The nameplate lists patents from the 1920s & 1930s. This example is in Fine condition and comes in the original wood crate. I had it at a tool show with a sign saying to please contact me if interested in buying and we would open it together. I came back from coffee to find an un-named idiot had torn the packaging open, ripping the end of the box off in the process, and left it all laying loose on the table. Guess he was too stupid to put it together or lost interest after revealing the contents. But it still hasn't been assembled and the box end is still with it.
