Blade front and tangent rear sights, graduated to 1000 meters, with the top of the chamber marked "WAGGENFABRIK/MAUSER/ OBERNDORP A/N", a "crown/U" proof on the left and the serial number on the upper left side flats. Standard two line marking on the right side of the frame, with the milled panels, niter blue small parts, matching numbers, stock cut back strap, lanyard ring and 32 groove hardwood grips. With a hard wood stock holster, renumbered to match. Condition: Excellent pistol, with 95% on the original blue finish, showing areas of light brown around the muzzle, along the underside of the barrel and along the edges, with a mixed gray on the grip straps and handling marks are also visible. Grips are very good, with mild pressure dents and scratches. Stock is refinished, with a chip absent from the lid and cracking of the body. Attaching iron is renumbered to match pistol. Mechanically excellent.

Inscribed: "To my friend Davis, 1893". Refer to Oct. 1893 Subscribers Magazine, Page 403, illustrating article on NWMP. C. H. Davis was a well known portrait photographer who photographed the Remington family and this painting came directly from the Davis descendent. The provenance is from the Biltmore Gallery in Scottsdale, Az. Image size: 17"H x 10"W. Frederick Remington, born in Canton, NY, studied art at Yale University, traveled to the nearly expanding part of the United States in the 1880s and ended up illustrating outdoor scenes for Harpers and Colliers Magazines. A prolific illustrator , painter, and sculptor. Remington was from the east coast and continued to live in the East while making periodic trips to the West. His work was detailed and realistic and depicted action scenes involving wagon trains, Indian wars, cattle drives, etc. After an emergency appendectomy Remington died at the age of 48. This is a magnificent piece of art for the serious collector. Beautifully framed and matted.

John S DuMont was considered one of America's top Colt collectors and was researching the Custer Battle at the time this gun was engraved for him about 1951. The Colt is an original Pre-war 38 that has been deluxe scroll engraved on all the parts except the frame which was left with the original case hardened colors. The BBL and cylinder were thick gold banded and a trail skull is relief engraved on backstrap with John S DuMont in script. A hand written note from Alvin White authenticates this fine Colt.

Delany with modern peep sight and hooded front sight installed in original dove tails. Barrel still show most original blue and has nice false muzzle bullet starter included. Full length tiger wood stock is very well figured, showing wrist checkering and brass tack adornment which is probably not original to the gun. Also shows repairs and chips to the ramrod retainer section. Lock work is by Drepperd of Lancaster and is in fine condition, with marginally engraving but is functioning properly. Brass patch box cover and butt plate are well executed and fitted.

The stocks are well-worn and show many small dings, mars and scratches but are sound and generally good overall and the original butt plate is retained. There are three notches cut toward the rear of the butt; the marking in the wood is of the correct style but cannot be guaranteed absolutely.

The revolver remains in fair to good condition showing approx 40%-50% original nickel drifting to patina with some erosion and pitting starting where the nickel has lifted. The cylinder shows some dark areas and some slightly heavier pitting. The hard rubber grips are good to very good. The action is good; the bore good. The hammer shows most of its case hardened colors. The barrel address is well-marked. The pistol retains its original Railway Express Agency tag which is marked number "14" on reverse and shows "Smith & Wesson revolver and serial #" typed on top. There were a number of Railway Express and Wells Fargo Arms (the Wells Fargo arms were purchased by Railway Express before WWII) that were auctioned approx 40 years ago.
