SANTA FE RR PHOTO ARCHIVE BY AT&SF AGENT AND HISTORIAN CHARLES GOEBEL

Remarkable eight volume photo archive of Santa Fe steam locomotives, motor cars, depots, etc. Nearly every shot meticulously captured the number of the engine or subject. Some fascinating shots, including one of a burning depot building in 1910. Too many highlights to describe here, but each volume described on spine: Vol. 1 - 'Steam Locos No 95 -1063,' Vol. 2 - '1066 - 1694,' Vol. 3 - '1696 - 3141,' Vol. 4 - '3142 - 3461,' Vol. 5 - '3462 - 3842,' Vol. 6 - '3843 - 5024,' Vol. 7 - 'C.K. Holliday Engines and Cars, Atchison KS Centennial June 1954, Misc pics, Locos, etc,' and Vol. 8 - 'Misc Engines, Motor Cars, Depots, etc.' Each volume bound with a printed spine plus handwritten overview of contents, plus name of the maker, Charles Goebel (1898-1987). Goebel was an AT&SF employee for many years, finally retiring as an Agent at Atchison in 1963. He was also the curator of the Santa Fe Railway Museum, housed in the Burlingame depot waiting room until the building was closed in 1981. This archive represents a rare part of Goebel's collection that remains in private hands as most of his collection was donated to the Kansas State Historical Society in 1981. Torpedos were fixed to tracks and caused a loud noise audible to engineers for when signals may be hard to see and other similar uses.

THREE WWII-ERA SANTA FE RAILROAD ADVERTISING ART MAGAZINES

Lot includes a great copy of 'Working for Victory on the Santa Fe: A Series of Wartime Advertisments.' With foreword by A.A. Dailey, General Advertising Manager, Santa Fe System Lines, dated July 15, 1944. Intended as a review of Santa Fe advertising since Pearl Harbor, as their ads appeared in newspapers, magazines and billboards. Focuses on their committment to moving troops and materials, helping the US meet its war load, as well as sell War Bonds, encourage Victory Gardening, and suggestions to wartime travelers. 24 pages total, softcover, with Santa Fe cross logo on front and back covers. Lot also includes two identical 'Santa Fe Advertising, 1945,' a review of Santa Fe's magazine and newspaper advertising, their purposes during 1945 - to tell the story of Santa Fe's facilities, building good will, exploit postwar industrial and agricultural possibilities of the various territories served by SF, and to promote the sale of War and Victory Bonds. Some with handwritten captions or other idenifying features. Super Chief, El Capitan, and many more. Binder cover has Charles Goebel's business card, retired Agent at AT&SF and curator of the SF Railway Museum until 1981.

Six original pages dating January - June 1900, featuring the art of E.A. Burbank, as copyrighted by Brush & Pencil, Chicago, 1899; plus the original calendar's cover page tucked in a special pocket on the back of the frame. Profiles northern Arizona's Pueblos in various dress; men, women, children, daily and ceremonial costumes, each with caption beneath the calendar explaining the image itself, an aspect of Pueblo life, or the AT&SF's connections in the southwest. 9-3/4 x 5-7/8 inch site areas, professionally matted and framed in acid free materials. Each page measures approximately 10-3/4 x 8 inches. Frame measures 29 x 30 inches. Not examined outside of frame, but appear in excellent condition with strong colors and no visible wear and tear.

Cross hatched green underside of visor, brown leather sweatband shows evidence of dry rot, oilcloth crown strip lining with faint maker mark from Chicago. Size tag appears to read 7-1/2. Shows a couple spots of mothing and general age.

A clock of unknown origin with recent dial having a single winding hole, stamped four digit number of 3925 inside rim of lower case door. Replaced back (plywood) bears paper label 'Santa Fe Form 1649' with matching number of 3925. Very good refinished condition, appears to run, running condition and origin not guaranteed.

Cocoa tin is full and unused. Allspice seems to be partial and Anise Seed is empty. All show some age and wear, oxidization to steel components of packaging. Rare.

An unusually large mounted albumen photograph (mammoth-plate) with attribution in the image of 'W.H. Jackson' and copyright lower right corner for the famous photographer of the American West, William Henry Jackson (1843 - 1942). Additionally noted is the title '1010. The Royal Gorge Grand Canon of the Arkansas,' along the lower edge, center, all within the negative. Margin mount bears advertising for the Denver & Rio Grande Scenic Line of the World,' and 'The Rocky Mountains. Scenes along the line of the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad.' With the discovery of large Silver deposits in Colorado in the late 1870's, the D & RG and the AT&SF raced to lay their tracks through the Royal Gorge. Both sent armed gunmen to establish their territory and, in essence, a small war broke out that lasted nearly two years. Government intervention finally settled the dispute and the D & RG prevailed. This image is of the tracks laid there by the D & RG. Image measures 20.5 x 17 inches, 24.5 x 20 inches with margin, in 34 x 29 inch frame. Mount discoloration and tight fractures at edges with one that extends 5 inches into the image, right side middle.

With applied sticker explaining, 'The 52-lb rail was made by Krupp Gusstahlfabrik, Essen, Germany in 1881. It was transported by ship around Cape Horn and used in Santa Fe's San Jacinto District in California from 1888 to 1972.' Silver toned; grand piece of railroad history.

Shows considerable wear and tear around the edges, a few tears into image field at top, evidence of horizontal creases and spotting. Not laid down, very rare. Guaranteed to be an original print for the late 19th century with full return privileges.
