The Campo del Cielo refers to a group of iron meteorites, or to the area where they were found, situated on the border between the provinces of Chaco and Santiago del Estero, 1,000 kilometers (620 mi) northwest of Buenos Aires, Argentina. The crater field covers an area of 3×20 kilometers and contains at least 26 craters, the largest being 115×91 meters. The craters' age is estimated as 4,000–5,000 years.

The total weight of the pieces so far recovered exceeds 100 tonnes, making the meteorite the heaviest one ever recovered on Earth. The largest fragment, consisting of 37 tonnes, is the second heaviest single-piece meteorite recovered on Earth, after the Hoba meteorite.

In 1576, the governor of a province in Northern Argentina commissioned the military to search for a huge mass of iron, which he had heard that Indians used for their weapons. The Indians claimed that the mass had fallen from the sky in a place they called Piguem Nonralta which the Spanish translated as Campo del Cielo ("Field of the Sky"). The expedition found a large mass of metal protruding out of the soil. They assumed it was an iron mine and brought back a few samples, which were described as being of unusual purity. The governor documented the expedition and deposited the report in the Archivo General de Indias in Seville, but it was quickly forgotten and later reports on that area merely repeated the Indian legends.

1678 Dated Pirate Attacked Spanish Shipwrecked "Consolacion" Silver Treasure Cob Coin - 8 Reales

The Story of the “Treasure of the Consolacion 1681”. In April of 1681, a fleet of Spanish treasure galleons were to leave the port of Lima, Peru, with the last few years of minted gold and silver coins from Potosi mints. The Santa Maria De la Consolacion was delayed in Chili, forcing the rest of the fleet to leave the port, and leaving the Consolacion to finish the journey to Panama alone.

Upon leaving Peru with the Consolacions new cargo of treasure alone, the ship was sighted by pirates, and the Captain decided to ground the ship. Tragically, the ship struck a reef off the island of Santa Clara within the bay of Guayaquil, Ecuador, which was nicknamed by the Spanish, “Isla de Muerto” ( Island of the Dead ). The galleon was soon evacuated and set on fire to prevent any pillaging. Neither pirates, nor returning Spaniards were able to recover all of the sunken treasure.

RARE 1784 El Cazador Spanish Salvaged Shipwreck Silver Eight Reale - Dated 1782

Now is a great opportunity to own a rare shipwreck salvaged Silver Eight Reale Spanish Screw Press Bust Dollar Coin from the El Cazador Shipwreck, that was salvaged in the 2002 expedition. It is dated 1782.

The Shipwreck That Changed America. On January 11, 1784, the Spanish Brigantine of War, El Cazador, sailed from Vera Cruz, Mexico, to New Orleans carrying 450,000 pesos of silver coins (today’s approx. value of $200 million). The King of Spain, Carlos III (1759-1788), had intended the coins on board to be used to redeem the nearly worthless paper currency that was then in circulation, in Spanish territorial Louisiana.

The El Cazador never made her destination, when the vessel, crew, and cargo sank into the ocean, disappearing without a trace. The ill-fated treasure was to have stabilized the Spanish monetary system in colonial North America. After the loss, Spain’s North American Holding weakened severely. The King of Spain was forced to either sell or trade Louisiana.

In 1800’s, a reluctant King Carlos IV (1788-1808), Conveyed Louisiana to France’s Napoleon. Three years later in 1803, Emperor Napoleon sold Louisiana to President Thomas Jefferson for $15 Million. With the loss of the El Cazador, the destiny of the United States was changed. The territory owned by the United States size was instantly doubled

For over 50 years, The Highwaymen, a loose association of twenty-six African American artists from Fort Pierce, Florida, USA, who began painting in the early 1950s and into 1960s, created large numbers of relatively inexpensive landscape paiintings, which were created using construction materials rather than traditional art supplies. As no galleries would accept their works, they sold them in towns and cities and along roadsides throughout Florida often still wet, out of the trunks of their cars.

Madame Recamier, known as Juliette, was the French Coquette mistress of 19th century writer Chateaubriand, and courtesan for Napolean.

Vintage Vicente Llinares Flaventia Hurdy Gurdy Cylinder Piano on Cart, from Spain

This Vintage Vicente Llinares Flaventia Hurdy Gurdy Cylinder Piano is on it's original Cart, and was made in Barcelona, Spain. This piece comes with two metal cylinders, or rolls, one is in the machine, and the other comes in a form built storage box. The actual Cylinder Piano is approx 21 ½” x 13” 24” tall. The cart is 49” long x 19” (top of wheel) x 19” across. There is a handle broken off on one side, which only functions to lift, and has nothing to do with the playability. Instructions for tuning and changing cylinders are on the underside of the lid. It does play, but may need tuning, as per the instructions. This is a very nice unusual piece.

A barrel piano (also known as a "roller piano") is a forerunner of the modern player piano. Unlike the pneumatic player piano, a barrel piano is usually powered by turning a hand crank, though coin operated models powered by clockwork were used to provide music in establishments such as pubs and cafés. Barrel pianos were popular with street musicians, who sought novel instruments that were also highly portable. They are frequently confused with barrel organs, but are quite different instruments. The central element of the barrel piano is a wooden barrel covered in strategically placed pins that play the piano when the barrel is turned. The operator uses a hand crank for this purpose, and can control the speed of the music by turning the crank slower or faster. Barrels typically contain a small number of short tunes; therefore, the musical repertoire is limited by the number of barrels one can afford and easily transport.

The Highwaymen, also referred to as the Florida Highwaymen, are a group of 26 named and listed landscape artists who have been called "The Last Great American Art Movement of the 20TH century". This group of self taught and self mentoring African American artists, were able to define themselves against the many odds, racial and cultural barriers of the time in which they painted, and created a body of work of over 200,000 paintings.

Shipwreck 1784 El Cazador Spanish Salvaged Silver Eight Reale Encrusted Coin Clump - Two Coins, 1783

Now is a great opportunity to own a rare shipwreck salvaged two coin clump, that contains Two Silver Eight Reale Spanish Screw Press Bust Dollars from the El Cazador Shipwreck, that were salvaged in the 2002 expedition, and are still in rare, encrusted form. This clump has a very rre and unusual occurrence, because one side of the coin clump has a visible partial date of "83", and coin remnants of the coin that used to be attached to it. The opposite side had a date of "83", which faded during the cleaning process, but wording and encrustaceans are still present.

He was primarily associated New England, especially Cape Cod, Massachusetts where he spent his summers from 1938 to 1965. However, he was in Florida where he was a member of the St. Augustine Art Association, and other locations on the East Coast. It is likely Hare was born in New York City. In 1935, they visited St. Augustine and an exhibition of his watercolors was held there in the old bank building by the cathedral. In Provincetown, they also exhibited paintings that Hare had completed in Florida. The couple liked St. Augustine so well that they returned two years later, joined the Art Association, and set up a studio at 33 Aviles Street. About 1938, the Hares, attracted to the rolling farmland, moved to Amherst, Massachusetts. He also painted at Gloucester, and from 1967 to 1977, they lived at Yarmouthport, and in 1977, moved to Palm Beach, Florida where he died three years later.

Vintage "Friedman Brothers" Colonial Williamsburg Mirror, Gold Gilt

Truly a design masterpiece, this mirror is an authentic reproduction of a late English Baroque antique, circa 1725-1740. As in the original, this mirror features an elaborate swan neck open pediment with sculpted rosettes and trailing acanthus leaves. The central cabochon is crowned with three Prince of Wales plumes. The four corners are accented with shells and the base features flowing acanthus leaves flanking a central shell. This magnificent gilt gesso mirror with beveled glass would make a grand statement in an entrance hall.

The glass measures 18″ X 30″, and the overall size is 24 3/4″ X 51 3/4″. This piece is in very nice condition, but PLEASE NOTE: Of both mirrors, all six of the top plumes have a seam, which I am not sure whether it is from the original construction of the piece, or if they are all repaired. I am inclined to believe that these are not repairs, just seams, and that two of the seams are more noticeable than others, as it matches on both mirrors, and it is right at the curve of the plume, which clearly would not be easy to carve from a single piece of wood. These are only noticeable upon close inspection, and are not visible when the mirrors are hanging. The original tag by the Maker is still intact on the reverse. This piece has an exact matching mate that is lot # 271.

1980 Gold Krugerrand Coin, South Africa, - 1 Oz. of Fine Gold

The Krugerrand is a South African gold coin, first minted in 1967 to help market South African gold. The coin proved popular, and by 1980 the Krugerrand accounted for 90% of the gold coin market. It is produced by the South African Mint, and offered here in a one ounce coin. This coin is in very nice condition, as shown in photos, and is 1 oz. of Fine Gold.

The Krugerrand was introduced in 1967, as a vehicle for private ownership of gold. It was actually intended to circulate as currency. Therefore it was minted in a more durable gold alloy, unlike most other bullion coins.

Despite the coin's legal tender status, economic sanctions against South Africa for its policy of apartheid made the Krugerrand an illegal import in many Western countries during the 1970s and 1980s. These sanctions ended when South Africa abandoned apartheid in 1994.

Antique Handcrafted Grandfather Clock, 1800's

This custom hand made clock is a beauty. With its nice dark wood, and the columns at the four corners of the clock top, it creates quite a presence. It has the pendulum, two weights, and the door lock key. The gentleman that built the clock in 1800’s was a cabinet maker, and fought in the civil war. A picture of him and his wife are with the clock to show some of its provenance. Some of his tools, used to build this clock, were said to have been donated to the Andrew County Museum. The clock is in very nice condition for its age, with an alligator finish. The moon phase dial shows weathering, and paint chipping, but is legible and adds great character to the clock. The clocks face seems to be made of beautifully crafted brass pieces, applied to a metal base. The numbers are metal, in the face plate, and painted in black. The door locks work, and the doors both have a single pane of glass. Some extra gold dust comes with the clock which is said to be left over from when the clock face was made. At the top of the clock, the days are marked 1-291/2, and 2 half globes. The clock appears to work, but stopped after a few minutes, this clock has a beautiful look and age. The angles and curves look to have been built with passion. This piece measures 21.5"W x 13.5"D x 85.5"H.

This piece has an exact matching mate that is lot # 227.

This group of self taught and self mentoring African American artists, were able to define themselves against the many odds, racial and cultural barriers of the time in which they painted, and created a body of work of over 200,000 paintings.
