Engraved German silver furniture and shield-shaped wrist escutcheons. Checkered walnut stocks. Contained in purple velvet-lined mahogany partitioned casing with brass corners and vacant lid escutcheon. together with small panel pattern powder flask with spring-loaded charger; turned wooden cap box; screwdriver and single-ball bullet mold. Key to case present.
Condition: Very good. Both guns showing light wear and age patina. Front sight broken on one example. Wood with light wear and minor bruises. Case excellent with light age wear present. Lining with minor snags and wear. Accoutrements with age wear and patina.
Notes: John P. Lower, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Denver, Colorado. Born 1833; apprenticed at Philadelphia to Joseph C. Grubb; independent after August 4, 1850. Lower made half-stock rifles [used J.H. Johnston barrels and George Golcher locks], percussion derringers. Made 6-shot, .32 rimfire, sheathed trigger revolvers marked with his name "W.L. Grant" or "D.D. Cone, Washington, D.C." until 1855 when Smith & Wesson sued for patent infringement. Lower came to Colorado in 1868. Became a partner of Carlos Gove in Denver in 1873 until 1876 when he opened his own shop, doing business at a number of successful locations: Blake Street, Larimer, Fifteenth and Champs. Died in 1917, at age of 84. One of the most famous of the Western gunmakers.

Contained in associated, blue felt-lined custom-crafted violin-style wooden case together with nickel-plated steel skeleton detachable shoulder stock, cleaning rod, oil bottle and 35 rimfire cartridges. Case with hook closures.
Condition: Very good. Barrel with grey age patina and scattered light pitting and minor dents. Frame and grip refinished and showing minor wear and marks. Grips very good. Case with heavy wear and staining to interior. Exterior with age blistering to finish and dark age patina.

9 1/4-inch spear-point blade, marked Dumonthier Brevete, with fullers on each side mounted between two 3 3/4-inch round barrels of approximately 10mm, cross-guard incorporates concealed hammers, folding trigger, fluted ivory grips and german-silver butt cap, green velour covered sheath with german-silver throat and tip; pressed-horn pistol powder flask with german-silver mountings - horizontal charger, ball mold with integral sprue-cutter and ramrod, german-silver oval-form capper marked BOCHE BREVETE 4, the whole contained within a embossed Moroccan leather-bound case decorated with scrolls on lid and the initials C. C., and lined with purple velour (now faded), and equipped with two spare nipples and single compartment.
Condition: Very good, knife-pistol with much original polish to blade, some staining to crossguard, dents to tip of sheath, mold with stained surfaces, horn with repair and some worm-holes, case with faded and worn interior, the key-plate is loose (now contained within the case's compartment). Underside of case with most of original leather covering now lacking.

The gilt-finished brass helmet, having a bronze alloy Royal coat-of-arms helmet plate with faceted steel backing plate. Crest surrounded with scroll ormolu and gilt oakleaf wreath surmounted with a king's crown. The brim, neck guard and sides decorated en suite with applique gilt scrolls. Gilt lion head chinscale rosettes, gilt chinscales, the top scale with two stars signifying rank of wearer. Clawfoot pattern closures. The top of helmet with gilt floral pattern base supporting a highly elaborate white feather plume approximately 24-inches long. Interior with cloth lining. This highly ornate ceremonial dress helmet was worn by high-ranking generals or admirals of Great Britain during ceremonies of the Royal sovereign and is quite rare.

An island with single palm tree is in the background. Action is created by turning an ivory crank on side which allows subject to row while sea serpent looms above, his head and tail in motion. No. LF 13123, 6-inch silver-plated barrel deeply engraved with floral scrolls and containing the maker's name in ribands, frame and cylinder decorated en suite, ivory grips finely scrimshawed with black highlighted foliate scrolls, butt set with lanyard loop; scrimshaw-decorated ivory-mounted turn-screw, copper-washed cleaning rod, silver-plated oil vessel, original box of pin-fire cartridges (now loose and lacking lid); contained within a blue velour-lined, brass-bound varnished rosewood case, the lid interior blind-stamped with maker's name.
Condition: Very good, retaining much original silver-plated finish with wear apparent to small areas of plating, tip of turn-screw chipped, oil vessel with much wear to plated finish, very good case.

Fine Cased Engraved Liegiose Two-Barrel 20-shot 7mm Pinfire Revolver, c. 1870

5-inch blued over and under barrels with scroll engraving at breech and barrel lug, Liege-proofed cylinder with scroll engraving, frame with scroll engraving and marked with a small Crown G, folding trigger and checkered grips, three-piece pewter oil vessel, brass and steel cleaning rod, rosewood-mounted turn-screw with screw-in pick in handle, bone-handled three-sided bristle brush, small glass bottle of Fiend oil and small number of original cartridges, the whole contained within an oak casing lined with green baise and set with a round brass escutcheon plate in lid, case lacking key-plate, old paper label applied to front of case reads: 7m/m 20 Chamber Pin Fire Revolver. This is a 20-shot, with ten chambers for 7mm cartridges in each row. By means of the two fixed beaks on the hammers shots are fired alternately from the two rows. The gun has on the right a loading gate and also an ejector which is swivelled to take care of expulsion of fired cases from both rows of chambers.
Condition: Excellent, retaining 95% original blue on barrels, though frame retains 50% of original blue having flaked especially from gripstraps, crack on grip panel, dent on other panel, very good case (lacking key-plate, underside of case with crack) and very good accessories.

*Replica German Third Reich Belt Multi-Shot Gun

Serial no. 5, .22 rimfire caliber , 4 individual 1 1/2-inch barrels made in single steel block; individually triggered and spring-loaded to fire forward when release lever is depressed. Spuriously SS markings on bottom of frame. Front belt plate with reproduction aluminum German Army eagle. Sold together with extensive archival file on the history and subsequent counterfeiting of these unique curiosa weapons, including a copy of a photo of one of the originals for comparison.
Condition: Fine. Showing light age wear and patina. Mechanism excellent.
Notes: Most of these unique curiosa Third Reich marked belt guns were manufactured in 1970-71 in post war Germany and are reasonable copies of the rare original. While very unique and collectible in their own right, most existing examples were not officially NSDAP made. The actual original design was an invention originally conceived by Louis Marquis, while in a WWI POW camp in 1915. As an engineer and inventor, Marquis refined his original design and in 1943 received an order to make five initial examples for Himmler's SS. The originals were all SS marked and had SS eagles on the belt plate. The underside of the belt plates of the originals were marked: Louis Marquis/W-Elberfeld and were made with two chambers, not four [see discussion in Deutches Waffen Revue for August and September, 1967, pages 8-9]. *Extremely Rare .38 Smith & Wesson R. F. Sedgley U.S. Navy Hand Firing Mechanism, Mark II, 'The OSS

2 3/4 inch smooth-bored barrel, mechanism mounted with ejector lever, sliding safety and hand inscribed "IRS," brass rivets (two loose), mounted on a left-handed leather glove with canvas cuff, marked HAND FIRING MECHANISM-MK-2 S (in a circle).
Condition: Very good, retaining much original finish (about 60-70% blue) and having two dents at plunger, two loose rivets and leather gove with wear overall.
Notes: With xeroxed copies of US Patent Papers for the "Fist Gun" for Stanley M. Haight, filed February 29, 1944. The Sedgely Glove Pistol is an extremely rare Second World US Martial Pistol. It is estimated that perhaps 200 units were produced the bulk of which were chambered for the .38 S&W cartridge. Often associated with the OSS, the Sedgely Glove Pistol was a USN Contract for Navy or Marine Engineers but proved impractical in the field. This example bears the second-type marking. Before the end of the war it is supposed that most of these pistols were destroyed. See Firearms Curiosa by Lewis Winant, pp. 223-4.

Unique flintlock mechanism based on the "Lorenzoni" principle. Lock, top of frame and side-mounted breech lever gold-inlaid with stars, floral motifs and laurel garlands. Left side frame panels with herringbone border detail. Top of frame and tang with gold-inlaid arms panoply and floral motifs. Lock marked: A. Cvphp. One-piece walnut slab grip with profuse fine silver wire inlay with floral and arms panoplies. A truly unique and fine antique firearm.
Condition: Fine to excellent as re-configured. Retaining approximately 65-75 thinning blue, possibly refinished with wear to breech lever and relief edges. Loading lever an expert replacement. Wood with light age wear and patina. Lanyard ring openings expertly filled in and restored to original configuration with silver wire inlay. Mechanically sound.

Condition: Very good with light cleaning overall.

The translucent horn powder flask, the obverse finely engraved with the portrait of a 17th-Century gentleman, the reverse with a coat-of-arms and date 1634. Edges of flask sealed with brass rivets. German silver powder charger with coined edge screw-off lid and swivel charger marked: A Chi Priv/Beetz, Wein. See-through powder charge chamber. German silver spout with horn ring. Four ring mounts. While dated 1634, this flask was manufactured in the mid-19th century as a commemorative decorator. Beetz, a well known Austrian flask maker 1850-60. Size: 10 1/2-inches high.

Very Fine and Elaborate French Silver-Mounted Flintlock Pistol by Jean-Baptiste Lamotte a' St. Etien

12 1/4-inch brightly blued two-stage barrel with molding-like rings on a cannon barrel, reenforcing muzzle, gold foresight, 5 1/4-inch breech section chiselled in high-relief with a drapery and trophies-of-arms supported by two columns. Corinthian capitals (probably representing Masonic pillars) highlighted by a gilt granular ground, the underside of the barrel is signed J. BTE LAMOTTE AINE ST. ETIENNE and also stamped TIVET CADET; ornate lock-plate depicting armors, cannon, helmets, drums and flags chiselled in high-relief and framed by borders of deeply chiselled foliage and embellished with gilt grounds, the cock and frizzen decorated en suite, the interior inscribed J. BTE LAMOTTE AINE ST. ETIENNE; the burl walnut stock profusely decorated with meandering silver-wire inlays, with an urn and floral arrangment with crescent moon motif inlaid at grip. Steel escutcheon plate inlaid in gold J. B. LAMOTTE AINE A' ST. ETIENNE, the stock embellished with relief decorative borders framing the engraved and gilt breech tang, the counter plate of cast-silver depicting arms, and the lockplate; mounted with cast-silver gripcap, triggerguard (struck with three hallmarks), and ramrod pipes each ornately embellished with arms and clothing of a psuedo-Eastern style, all mountings likewise decorated with gilt grounds. Inside of lock mortise stamped A. CHOSSON.
Condition: Very good, retaining much bright blue and gilt finish to barrel, with some developing staining at stock line; fore-end repaired from old break nearest muzzle with subsequent looseness of silver-wire inlays in that area.

Exceptional Cased Pair of Multi-Color Gold-Inlaid Percussion Pocket Pistols by Anton Vincent Lebeda

3 1/4-inch octagonal etched, twist-steel barrels finished in-the-white and inlaid in two-colors of gold void-shaped panels formed along each of the barrels' eight edges with A.V. LEBEDA IN PRAG (No. 1 pistol) and A. V. LEBEDA A' PRAGUE (No. 2 pistol) and floral scrolls. The panels are highlighted by blackened backgrounds, muzzles and breeches with two-color gold arabesques; barrel tangs and stepped lockplates embellished en suite; hammer adorned with two-color gold scrollwork with perched birds. Finely checkered triggers, varnished walnut half-stocks carved at grips with floral scrollwork surrounding four panel scenes of mythological themes. The stocks are set with gold escutcheon shield-form plates surmounted by crowns and engraved with the intertwined initials W.W.; mounted with scroll-engraved triggerguards each gold-inlaid with a family crest surmounted by a crown, four-sided scalloped gripcaps bearing a checkered pattern and two-color gold scroll inlay. Horn mallet with polished German-silver loading tip, blued ball mold with polished steel sprue-cutter, horn-handled nipple wrench, pressed-horn bag flask (lever broken) with wire stitching, the whole contained within a rosewood veneered case having a waisted-rectangular shape and lined with red velour (now turned to dusty rose) and having a gilt-stamped red silk interior to lid (also fading to a dusty rose).
Condition: Excellent, case lid interior lining with some wear to surface and gilt-stamping and expected fading of silk lining's color, case lacking one compartment lid.

The intaglio-carved staghorn flask featuring a stag, pursued by hounds and mounted hunters in a typical hunting scene. Details include a finely carved and forest environment in contrasting brown tones with intricately detailed trees, ferns and other flora. Dramatic images of hounds on the run, with hare and stag in flight. The bottom with silver ring mounts, the centers with carved vignettes of wild boar and dog heads. Top of flask with raised floral scroll border with animal head vignettes. Silver top and charger with cabbage leaf ferrule and spring-loaded valve. Silver collar with ring mounts. Silversmith hallmark FL and other marks. An exceptional example of the carved stag flask.

6-inch round barrels with silver-inlaid floral designs at either end of engraved silver-inlaid sighting-planes, the breeches inlaid with silver banding, gold-lined touch-holes, breech tangs set with two silver-inlaid panels engraved with floral sprigs; rounded lockplates inscribed GIUSEPPE AGAZZI and mounted with floral engaved cocks and frizzens; the inside struck with an unrecorded mark "Z" under a pellet within an oval; burl-walnut stocks mounted with faceted ramrod pipes, floral engraved triggerguards and stirrup gripcaps, and profusely inlaid with silver scrolls surrounding grotesque faces beneath breech tangs, crowns and ornate vacant escutcheon plates, rounded silver counter plate floral engraving, fore-ends set with horn tips and each side of fore-end adorned with floral scrolls of silver inlay-work, ramrod with horn tip.
Condition: Very good, re-blued barrels, some small losses to silver wire inlays on one pistols to the left of its breech tang, some marks to walnut overall.
Notes: The only documents mentioning the Agazzi family are those published by DeVita [1970, page 33] and those refer only to two swordsmiths working in Rome during the first half of the 17th-century. Nolfo di Carpegna's Brescian Firearms list only one "surviving specimen bearing this signature." That flintlock is in a private collection in Switzerland.

7 1/2-inch browned round barrels bearing gilt decorations at muzzles of clouds and sun-burst, and gilt scrolls at breeches, rounded lock-plates inscribed L. RAYMOND LIEGE, the varnished walnut stocks inlaid with silver-wire forming extensive scroll-work, and set with cast silver mounts with mythological faces and themes, the butt caps magnificently cast in an exaggerated relief of a lion's head, its jaws open to reveal fangs and tongue, the stocks' grips extensively set with silver studs (pique) surrounding shield-form plate inscribed PIGNUS, silver-mounted wood ram rods.
Condition: Fine. Barrels posiibly re-broened, the stocks with expected light wear, excellent mounts throughout.

8 1/4-inch, swamped octagonal barrel decorated with a seme of ninety stars framed by gold-inlaid borders, drapery, and an extensive and elaborate gilt panel featuring lightning, gold-inlaid PENIET A PARIS and an arrow motif, gold foresight; lockplate engraved with intricate borders and an eagle, a rooster, and inscribed Peniet a Paris, set-trigger with tension screw; walnut full-stock extensively inlaid with exhuberant embellishments of silver-wire forming meandering floral scrollwork and silver panels, engraved classical faces, rooster heads, and foliage, barrel tang surrounded by foliage and a shield motif executed in two colors of gold, basket-weave checkered grip, faceted silver ramrod pipes, silver pommel cap with a neo-classical head wearing an embellished Renaissance parade helmet decorated with a Wyphern (a motif also seen in Boutet firearms of the period of the First Consul, the head); silver triggerguard with gold-overlaid helmeted-head contained within a circular frame surmounted by a Roman fasces upon which stands a rooster, the triggerguard's bow with high-relief lion face, the guard strap struck three times with Parisian silver maker's marks. Ram rod with ivory tip.
Condition: Barrel has truned to a light grey patina overall, some insignificant wear to original varnish on wood.

Fine Pair of Silver-Mounted French Flintlock Holster Pistols by Bizouard a Marseilles, c. 1820. Prob

13-inch two-stage barrels decorated in gilt with motifs of crescent moons, turbans, stars (seme), an urn issuing forth flame and smoke, and of clouds and sunbursts (at foresights), rounded lockplates inscribed Bizouard a' Marseille decorated with engravings of birds, walnut stocks extensively silver-wire inlaid with meandering foliage, silver mounts: escutcheon plates, counterplates, triggerguards (struck three times with hallmarks) and buttcaps all cast in high relief featuring extensive collections of trophies of war.
Condition: Excellent, the gilt on the barrels has faded, the barrels are varnished, excellent stocks and mountings, which exhibit very minor denting.
Notes: Hallmarks for: ML for Marseilles c. 1820. According to Der Neue Stockel, there are two Bizouards in Marseilles; one c. 1790, the other, Claude Bizouard working 1830-1866.

The spurred buttcaps engraved with rocailles framing armored classical figures, one of Minerva and the other of Mars; oval escutcheon with script monogram J.E.G.; polished walnut fullstock carved with foliage, outlining the barrel and rear ramrod pipe; original steel-tipped ramrods. Buttcaps with Paris marks of between October, 1744 and November, 1745. Overall, a fine and very attractive pair of French flintlock pistols.

Very Fine Pair of Silver-Stocked Scottish Flintlock Belt Pistols by Hamburger & Co., c. 1830

6 1/8-inch blued three-stage barrels formed with twelve-sides at muzzle, and seven-sides at breech and round between, ornately engraved overall with scrolls and border engraving, semi-rainproof pans, roller frizzen springs and scroll-engraved case-hardened locks inscribed HAMBURGER & CO., solid silver stocks marked with four hallmarks on the undersides and embellished with extensive scroll and border engravings, ornately chiselled triggerguards, the ram's-head butts embellished with meandering rose and thistle engraving, the butts incorporate screw-in picks, stocks mounted with steel belt-hooks.
Condition: Excellent, retaining virtually all the original bright blue finish to barrels, and showing only some wear to the finish on the belt hooks.

Rare and Exotic Indo-Persian 4-Barrel Percussion Shield Gun, c. 1850

The thick, finished leather shield, 23-inches wide with gilt-floral borders and embossed sun image in center. Four pierced steel bosses with hinged caps. The back side of shield with complex system of two double-mounted percussion locks designed to fire four individual rounds, the barrel openings disguised under the relief bosses on the exterior of shield. Chambers are fired by articulation of levers on the back side. Red velvet arm straps and pad. A very rare and interesting curiosa item of Indo-persian origins, based on the European model of the 16th-century.
Condition: Good. Metal showing age wear and patina with scattered light rust present. One lock mechanism needs minor repair. Exterior of shield with minor wear and chips to finish.

Profusely inlaid fruitwood stock, having scrimshawed ivory animals, dyed ivory and pearl spots and ivory scrolls. Muzzle mounted with scroll-type ax head engraved with scrolls, bird and seated hare. Opposite side with 4-pronged hammer. Ebony cleaning rod with spool finial. Butt of gun with concealed 18-1/2-inch spike dagger of diamond section. Steel oval pommel with ball finial. Overall length: 24 3/4-inches.
Condition: Fine for this type item. Barrel retaining approximately 80-85% reblued finish with scattered light wear and patina. Stock with light wear and minor crack repairs. Some portions of inlay are replacements. Steel mounts with wear and pitting.

Fine Japanese Snap-Matchlock Pistol, c. 18th/19th century

Having a robust, tapering octagonal bronze barrel with strongly moulded muzzle damacened in silver, standing sights damascened in gold and silver, decorated with a damascened dragon in clouds over its full length; with Tokugawa mon and three brief inscriptions, including the date of manufacture 1732, all damascened in gold, fitted with bronze pan, fence and pan cover, each parcel damacened. Plain bronze lock with figured wooden fullstock decorated with five gilt-lacquered Tokugawa mon; small plain bronze mounts and trigger and original wooden ramrod. Size: 13 5/8-inches long.
Condition: Fine. Fore-end cracked along the top edge on one side. Barrel retaining pin missing.
Addendum: This item has had a fine crack in the stock repaired on the right side near muzzle.

Extremely Rare Silver-Mounted Japanese Snaphaunce Pistol, c. 1650

.54 caliber, 5 1/2-inch octagonal barrel with flared and molded muzzle set with foresight, The barrel was probably forged in the same technique as swords of the region by using successive thin layers of steel laminated to produce a stronger material. The breech fitted with gilt-brass straps (for securing barrel to stock) and gilt-brass triggerguard. The lock is modeled on the European snaphaunce lock circa 1620-30. An ornately chiseled mechanism, depicting a three-clawed Dragon, symbol of hidden knowledge and supernatural power, and incorporating a Buddhist ceremonial sword encrusted in silver on the battery bridle. The fine relief work is related to that of a much-prized school of Tsuba design common during the 17th-century which suggests it may have been created by an accomplished artist of that discipline. The brass-covered pan is similar in design to many Japanese matchlocks of the period. The finely carved hardwood stock is superior in design and execution, reflecting the height of the gun-making art in 17th-century Japan.
Condition: Excellent, repaired fine crack at fore-end along right-side.
Notes: The first Portuguese traders arriving in Japan in 1543 brought with them matchlock firearms which greatly impressed the Japanese shoguns and officials. An account of the early expeditions records that six and a half months after the presentation of a single musket to the ruler of Nagasaki, local craftsmen had produced six hundred representative copies and that by the mid 1550s there were over three hundred thousand examples throughout the Japanese empire. The ease with which the matchlock mechanism could be reproduced and the fact that Japan remained a closed society for centuries made advancements in firearms near non-existent, despite the fact that the flintlock system had been in use by the Portuguese until their expulsion from Japan in 1639. Exceedingly Rare Spanish or Neapolitan Four-Barreled Flintlock Combination Pistol and Pole-Arm [earl

Serial no. 335, leaf-shaped hinged blade with spring catch, retained in the folded position by a brass catch and released by a thumb-trigger. The molded socket with spring and roller, the head of the turned haft fitted with a group of four 11mm cal barrels each with its own miguelet lock, fired by brass thumb-triggers in the lock casing or by corresponding triggers in the lower haft. The haft with threaded socket for the dismounting butt of ?handrail? form, and with butt trap with self-opening spring. The stock stamped with old inventory or collection number 335, the sling loop with attached brass tag numbered 282 (Frank Bivins collection number) Length: 46 inches.

Very Rare and Important Pair of Presentation Gold-Inlaid Forsyth First Model Self-Priming Patent Pis

.69 caliber, 10 1/4-inch two-stage barrels engraved with floral scrolls and at breech section with gold-inlaid scrolls and stars; gold-mounted lock-plates set with FORSYTH & CO. PATENT marked self-priming mechanisms; walnut stocks profusely inlaid in silver depicting scolling floral vines, gilt-brass mounts deeply chased with representations of trophies-of-arms, mahogany ram rods with ivory tips. Primers numbered inside 1094. W.A. Overall length 16 1/2-inches. W.A. Beckwith produced his own version of the sliding magazine primer lock which was considered to infringe on the Forsyth Patent, and which he was prohibited from making or selling in 1811.
Condition: Very good, barrels with light gray patina overall, the self-priming mechanisms retaining traces of the original bright blue, stocks with some light handling.
Notes: These pistols were presented to Lt.-General Sir George Bullock, Governor of Bermuda in about 1913. An almost identical pair of pistols are illustrated in One Hundred Great Guns by Merrill Lindsay, pp. 100-1, as noted in the Russell Aitken Collection.

The reverse with scene of Arminius holding the severed head of Quintilius Varus, a reference to the German defeat of two Roman Legions in 9 A.D. in the Teutoberg Forest of Germany.The shield with the arms of Julius Echter von Mespelbrunn, Prince Bishop of Wurzburg. Coat-of-arms: The shield bears three crowns, the arms of Sweden. The shield on the left side of the knight's head bears the arms of the Bishopric of Wurzburg quartering those of Echter von Mespelbrunn. The side panels with richly engraved laced strapwork. Rare and Extraordinary Highly Ornate Royal Red Velvet and Silver Bullion Brocaded Pistol Bags and E

The three-piece ensemble comprising of a pair of matching brown leather pommel holsters with ornate red silk velvet brocade covers profusely embroidered in silver and multi-colored thread with floral scrolls, pillow embroidered cornucopia and figural motifs. Borders fringed, with silver bullion tassels. The matching shabraque or saddle skirt decorated en suite with similar motifs. This ornate ensemble was undoubtedly the property of royalty, judging by the quality of workmanship and attention to detail. A museum quality item seldom seen on the market.

German Powder Flask in the Style of Hans Schmidt of Ferlach, c. 1680-90

The 5 3/8 x 1 3/4-inch round body of burlwood extensively inlaid on obverse-side with an engraved silver panel of family crest, itself surrounded by silver-wire inlays forming a double-headed eagle motif, which is in turn framed by a hunting scene (in silver); the reverse-side features a silver inlaid bird, itself set on a roundel of ebonized-wood, and enclosed within dense, bramble-like foliage formed of silver-wire inlays; three gilt suspension rings, and gilt lever and spout.
Condition: Very good, with some cracking and very early repairs to wood body, the silver inlays at face of flask depicting the hunting scene are recent restorations - the bird on the reverse-side likewise restored.

Gilt roped borders. Side ring mounts and base with decorative pierced floral escutcheons. Curved belt hook. Engraved gilt copper spout with faceted square base engraved with scrolls. Condition: Very good. Retaining approximately 85-90% original gilt finish with scattered wear and patina. Underlying base fabric heavily darkened with age but fairly intact. Wear to belt hook. No stopper.

Fine pair of unusually long Saxon Military Wheellock Holster Pistols by Zacharias Herold, c. 1600

Each with slender 24-inch octagonal barrel in .43 caliber. Breeches with latitudinal flutes above tang and struck three times with the poincon of Zacharias Herold (Herr, Der Neue Stockel no. 516). Bright steel locks. Full walnut stocks, the fore-ends with bone tips and ramrod housing, all incised with foliage: and, on either side, with three groups of incised roundels, two for retaining the barrel pins. Lock screws retained by incised bone panels: one in the form of an elephant-like sea monster, the other a snail. Barrel tangs framed by bone plaques; at either side incised with cornucopia, the rearmost bearing the monogram GZ. The pear-shaped pommels inlaid with horn roundels and terminating in a horn button. Retaining the original ramrods with incised bone tips. Length of each 35-inches.
Condition: Excellent. Bright steel showing only very minor pitting. Stocks showing light wear and scattered minor handling.

Rare Saxon Powder Flask and Cartridge Pouch Ensemble, Late 16th/early 17th-Century

Comprising: 1) Horn flask of flattened form with incised decoration; the front with bunches of fruit around an escutcheon bearing the arms of the Elector of Saxony the sides with interwoven banding; the back with bunches of fruit and C scrolls. Simple blued steel mounts including spring-mounted top with measure spout. Back with belt hook. Retaining period gilt thread and purple silk cord with one large tassel remaining. 2) Black leather cartridge pouch, the banded body containing a leather-bound wooden form with compartments for five cartridges. Flap fastening with a steel button. Lower edge with applied panel equipped with iron fitting for flask hook. Length overall 18 inches.
Condition: Flask excellent and showing one area of worming. Mounts retain most blue finish with light spotting. Pouch with scuffs and minor tears.
Addendum: The back of the pouch has been re-enforced with added leather and tassel has frayed cordage.

The side-by-side 21 1/8-inch tapering, octagonal barrels in .30 caliber, and with molded muzzles and breeches. Breech section with unidentified heart-shaped maker?s poincons bearing the initials DH within a heart. The flat locks equipped with safety latches, heart-shaped pancover release button, grotesque bird-form wheel cages and dogs engraved as scowling monsters. Full fruitwood stocks boldly decorated with an urn of flowers and various foliate motifs in engraved horn, within broad borders. The faceted pommel banded in bone and inlaid with plaques of engraved horn fruits and foliage. Bone-tipped ramrod. Length overall: 31 3/4-inches.
Condition: Excellent. Smooth gray metal with some minor pitting and light scratches. Stock with scattered small blemishes, minor slivered loss to ramrod channel and with small hairline crack at right lock.

Superb Early 17th-Century German Wheellock Holster Pistol Masterfully Decorated in the Third Quarter

The walnut stock profusely and exquisitely inlaid in staghorn with scrolling foliage, pellets, tendrils and strapwork, inhabited with human figures, animals, mythical sea creatures and beasts, birds, caryatid, fruit, flowers, and vignettes of courting scenes, gambling, a castle, warriors, a jester with hounds, a mounted naked warrior fighting a dragon, musicians, portrait busts, and huntsmen, the slightly swelling hexagonal pommel finely decorated en suite, the butt with female angel blowing a horn. The designs, perhaps, taken from Etienne Delaune (1519-1583). The barrel deeply chiseled at the breech and muzzle with scrolling strapwork, the central panel with Eve holding the apple, satyrs above and below, and a putto at the muzzle. The lock bordered with bold roping and deeply chiseled with mythical creatures and scrolling foliage, the half wheel-cage with Samson holding his club and the head of a lion, forward of the wheel a Chimera, the whole with very faint traces of original gilding. The triggerguard masterfully chiseled with monster head finial at the wrist and a sea creature finial at the lock point, trigger in the form of a frond. The dog (replacement) in the form of a monster with scales extending from a caryatid. The dog pivot/spring retainer a grimacing mask. The extraordinary quality of the decoration suggests it is almost certainly from the workshop of Baron Frederic Spitzer*. Length: 23.85 inches.
Condition: Excellent, some very minor shrinkage to wood, minor inlay restored, front ramrod pipe replaced, dog an expert replacement.

Fine and Very Rare .36 caliber Saxon Wheellock Pistol (?Puffer?) Made For A Boy, dated 1586

The slightly swamped three-stage barrel beveled at the muzzle, the median chiseled with diverging flutes and retaining traces of original bluing, the breech struck with the makers mark IN and dated 1586 across the top flat. The blued flat lock with incised border, the domed gilt-bronze wheel cover engraved with fruit and foliage, and with a scalloped edge, the gilt and fluted safety-catch with shaped knob. The sliding pan-cover release in the form of a gilded shell. Dog finely engraved as a monster head and with human head finial. Fruitwood full stock profusely inlaid with stag-horn plaques and close set patterns of ball-flower scrollwork, the latter inhabited by a squirrel, an owl, demon masks and hounds in pursuit of a hare. The compressed pommel inlaid with a roundel (later) bearing the arms of Saxony, and with mirror design of flowers segmented by horn lines. The underside of the fore-end engraved with a minute letter ?A?, perhaps the stockmaker?s mark. Original horn tipped ramrod. Length: 12 inches.
Condition: Very fine with only minor pitting on the barrel, triggerguard and trigger, the horn (upper) lock retaining plaque, and the ball butt roundel replaced.

Fine and Exceptional Brunswick Wheellock Ball Butt Pistol (?Puffer?), Late 16th-century

The swamped 12 1/2-inch .60 caliber two-stage barrel, decorated over its entire length with damascened strapwork in the oriental taste, enclosing a stork displayed, a caryatid within a pagoda, a huntsman blowing a horn, sea creatures, and a satyr mask against a blue (now russet) ground, struck on the underside with an orb and cross mark. The flat lock decorated en suite, with strapwork enclosing birds and a lion sejant. Embossed brass wheel cover with woman?s face. The knobbed sliding pan cover with button release, dog with fixed upper jaw and engraved with strapwork, internal spring. The stock profusely inlaid with natural and green dyed horn pellets in foliage and spiraling , geometric design, incorporating a lion reguardant, birds, classical masks, helmeted warriors and monsters. The ball butt with a band of classical bust and faces, and, at the base, a roundel with plumed and barred helmet and the initials H.R. surrounded by satyrs. Length: 22-inches.
Condition: Excellent with very minor restoration to inlay, replaced ramrod, old crack from lock-point to triggerguard screw.

The stock and ball butt with unusually fine inlaid decoration, incorporating a classical battle scene, the nude warriors shown surrounded by ropework and overlapping coin borders. The underneath with extravagant trophies of classical arms, incorporating helmets, shields, cuirasses, staff weapons, swords, mace, cudgels and banners, within roped borders. The upper wrist decorated with caryatids, a satyr, and trophies of musical instruments, the ball butt with six banded panels decorated en suite. Plain lock with chiseled and engraved spring terminals, pierced pan-cover release, and domed wheel cover The dog with traces of engraving. The ball but with horn roundel engraved with a face and dated 1594. The .60 cal. part octagonal/ part round barrel chiseled at the muzzle and breech with acanthus leaves, and struck with the makers mark FP, and the Augsburg control mark (Stoeckel 1285). 17-inch round rifled turn-off barrel with a swivel-ring, decorated with an intermingled array of stars (seme) and quatro-foils between two large panels of gilt drapery, stars and floral motifs - the uppermost with the addition of a goose, octagonal breech engraved with Sphinx, classical faces and intertwined sea-serpents and struck three times BOUTET and additionally struck with three poincons depicting Napoleonic eagles, single gold-band and gold-inlaid touch-hole, the underside of breech inscribed BOUTET A VERSAILLES; breech extension engraved with wypherns, birds and two monkeys (in the manner of Jean-Baptiste Oudry), semi-rainproof pan with early type frizzen-mounted roller, the frizzen itself embellished with two birds drinking from a cup, cock with bird motif, back-action lock-plate with nude youth whispering into the ear of a resting lion, vermeil silver counterplate depicting a hunting scene; the triggerguard, acting as a release for the barrel is engraved with a winged nude woman, the two-part (take-down) walnut stock exhuberantly embellished with extensive, engraved gold panels overall forming draperies and floral motifs with an owl at grip, geese at comb and stork belly, musical instruments, the family crest of the important Spanish noble family of Guzman, silver buttplate with hallmarks, with side panels of drinking birds with gilt grounds, the comb set with a high-relief mythological figure wearing armor.

Rare and Exceptional Antique Folding French Bowie Knife by Vauthier, c.1840

A large, 17 7/8" overall length in the open position, and weighing 1 pound 2 ounces. The ricasso of the 12 5/8" long x 3/16" thick x 1 1/16th-inch wide blade is hot stamped VAUTHIER RUE, DAUPHINE No 34 in two lines, and the location PARIS in a small circle to the right of the name. The blade has a 3 1/2" false edge, no nicks to the edge, a long, sharp, full tip, and has never been sharpened. It also has almost the entire original crocus of iron polish on the blade. The 8 7/16" portion of the 12 5/8" blade extending beyond the lower of the two cross guards when the blade is in the closed demonstrates that this is a large and formidable weapon, even in the closed position. The blade locks in the 12 5/8" long open position with a typical French-style ring release. In the closed blade position, the blade locks securely, and is released by pressing a German silver oval release button in the middle of the ivory grip scale. The large 3 5/8" long x I 3/16-inches wide x 3/16-inches thick ivory scales are exceptional, original to the period with no chips or cracks, with beautiful age patina that only comes from 150 years of natural aging and oils transferred from handling. Each scale has a carved three-dimensional raised center panel secured by six German silver pins, with iron liners. The mounts of this fine folder are typical French iron bolsters, with the early 1830's Sheffield-style double crossguard at both ends of the hilt. The Master pin and lock back release ring are iron, as are the four-crossguard quillons with median ridges that are shaped by hand filing. The integral top bolster, crossguard, and lock back release are engraved on both sides with about 20 very fine hand-chiseled line engravings. The fine original sheath is rarer than the knife, as almost all were lost over time and are missing.
