Unique Late 1700's French Flintlock With "Sea Dog Head" Carved Butt, Superb Piece!

Lot # 104 (Sale Order: 103 of 362)

European style flintlock pistol in 50 caliber, Circa late 1700’s to early 1800’s. The butt of the grip is a wonderfully carved “Seadog“ with animated detail. The barrel is stamped “MANIE” and has several faint touchmarks. The surface is nicely patinated, with the common pitting for a weapon of this period, and there are a few very minor chips (obviously aged) in the wood at the lock plate, that do not affect the functionality of the weapon. This wonderful gun also appears to retain it’s original ramrod, and has an original belt hook, attached at the side plate, which is very uncommon and a nice accent. Overall a very unique looking pistol. No FFL background check is required to buy this firearm.

Sea Dog is a term used to refer to a well seasoned sailor, and in the Late 1700's was also commonly used to describe privateers, pirates, and adventurers. The Sea Dog is also known as a mythical beast, like a dog with fins, webbed feet and a scaly tail.

This book is featured on page 80 of "The Illustrated History of Weaponry" Book, by Chuck Wills....more

1800's Masonic Apron Skull & Crossbones, Ames Sword Company, Fraternal Knights Templar, Pirate

Lot # 111 (Sale Order: 110 of 362)

This Rare Skull & Crossbones Apron has a fabric tag marked, "Ames Sword Co. Military & Society Goods, Chicopee, Mass", along with a small silver rimmed plaque that reads, "H E Hale". The Apron measures at 16"W x 15.5"L, and has a black velvet front, ribbon laced edging and waist ties, and a black linen back. The top flap of the front has two silver crossed swords, with embossed designs of a cross on the pommel, and in the middle of the cross guard. On the main Apron there is a Silver Skull & Crossbones. I believe that the embellishments on the front are possibly 800 silver, from the way they tarnish and appear.

This presentation apron is in amazing condition, with very minimal wear. One of the crossed swords is slightly bent, and could likely be bent back, but we have not attempted, as it is so slight, you don't notice it, until closely inspected. There are eight small rings attached under the crossed swords, and eight rings on the reverse that may have been used to hold adornments?

This is a unique and rare piece that will be a wonderful addition to any collection....more

1678 Dated Pirate Attacked Spanish Shipwrecked "Consolacion" Silver Treasure Cob Coin - 8 Reales

The Story of the “Treasure of the Consolacion 1681”. In April of 1681, a fleet of Spanish treasure galleons were to leave the port of Lima, Peru, with the last few years of minted gold and silver coins from Potosi mints. The Santa Maria De la Consolacion was delayed in Chili, forcing the rest of the fleet to leave the port, and leaving the Consolacion to finish the journey to Panama alone.

Upon leaving Peru with the Consolacions new cargo of treasure alone, the ship was sighted by pirates, and the Captain decided to ground the ship. Tragically, the ship struck a reef off the island of Santa Clara within the bay of Guayaquil, Ecuador, which was nicknamed by the Spanish, “Isla de Muerto” ( Island of the Dead ). The galleon was soon evacuated and set on fire to prevent any pillaging. Neither pirates, nor returning Spaniards were able to recover all of the sunken treasure....more

RARE 1784 El Cazador Spanish Salvaged Shipwreck Silver Eight Reale - Dated 1782

Lot # 118 (Sale Order: 117 of 362)

Now is a great opportunity to own a rare shipwreck salvaged Silver Eight Reale Spanish Screw Press Bust Dollar Coin from the El Cazador Shipwreck, that was salvaged in the 2002 expedition. It is dated 1782.

The Shipwreck That Changed America. On January 11, 1784, the Spanish Brigantine of War, El Cazador, sailed from Vera Cruz, Mexico, to New Orleans carrying 450,000 pesos of silver coins (today’s approx. value of $200 million). The King of Spain, Carlos III (1759-1788), had intended the coins on board to be used to redeem the nearly worthless paper currency that was then in circulation, in Spanish territorial Louisiana.

The El Cazador never made her destination, when the vessel, crew, and cargo sank into the ocean, disappearing without a trace. The ill-fated treasure was to have stabilized the Spanish monetary system in colonial North America. After the loss, Spain’s North American Holding weakened severely. The King of Spain was forced to either sell or trade Louisiana.

In 1800’s, a reluctant King Carlos IV (1788-1808), Conveyed Louisiana to France’s Napoleon. Three years later in 1803, Emperor Napoleon sold Louisiana to President Thomas Jefferson for $15 Million. With the loss of the El Cazador, the destiny of the United States was changed. The territory owned by the United States size was instantly doubled...more

"Ballerina Boy & Girl - Pose 1" By Stephen Scott Young, Signed Original Watercolor By Listed Artist

Lot # 119 (Sale Order: 118 of 362)

This stunning original work is by world renowned listed artist Stephen “Scott” Young. This is the first time this piece has ever been offered on the open market for sale, as it has been in a private collection. We are pleased to offer it at public auction, without reserves, to the highest bidder.

This piece is an original drybrush watercolor on paper, of a boy and girl ballerina figure. This is what we are calling Pose 1 of an identical pair. In the lower left hand corner, it is signed, “SS Young”. This extraordinary piece measures 15 3/4” x 19” framed, and is professionally framed and matted with Green Suede & Black Matting. The reverse has inscriptions that read, “ C. 1982, SS Young, For Jan Mormen, St. Augustine, Fla", which shows through a window on the reverse. This fabulous piece is a painting of a pair of porcelain bisque figures, made by the Kaiser Porcelain Company. The two are listed as Ballerina & Dancer, currently on the Kaiser Porcelain Homepage, http://www.kaiser-porzellan.com/en/ where they were originally sold in plain white bisque, or finished painted porcelain. This painting, and it's mate, Lot 139, are two different angles of the two figures together, creating an elegant scene.

This piece has such amazing detail and coloring, with a multilayered effect that gives it such depth and character, that few artists can perfect as well as Scott. Please click on the photos to enlarge them to fully appreciate the intricacy of this work.

This is the earliest example that we have been able to find of Scott's love for Ballerina's, for which he is gaining notoreity for in galleries an auction houses across the world. Scott has mastered the art of watercolor, and many critics liken him to Winslow Homer and Andrew Wyeth in his style. ...more
