French Oil Painting with Toy Theatre Scenes and Chiming Clock 3000/4000

32" (81 cm.) w. x 27"h. x 7"d. Village life in the early 19th century is depicted in the oil painting with a scene that centers around a toy Polichinelle theatre with Punch and Judy figures, and another story-telling event in which the narrator illustrates her story with the use of character dolls. There are lake and country scenes, sheep-herder, and a church whose tower retains the original porcelain clock face whose dial is in exact scale with the tower, and which is an actual working clock with 2-train clockwork movement, silk thread suspension and gong chiming on the hour and the half-hour, just as the village clock would chime. The painting is arranged within a decoratively-carved wooden frame with gilded finish. Excellent condition of mechanism and beautifully-detailed painting with children-at-play themes. Wonderful French Musical Automaton "The Old Lady Knitting" by Roullet & Decamp 7500/9500

24" (63 cm.) An old woman with highly-characterized head of papier-mache, is seated on a wooden chair, having glass eyes, sharp nose, open mouth with missing teeth, red age lines on face, grey mohair wig under Charlotte cap, carton torso with mechanism, papier-mache hands and lower legs. She is dressed in a burgundy gown with green cotton apron, black fringed shawl with embroidered flowers, beads, woolen stockings, black shoes, and holds a knitting bag on her lap and knitting work and needles in her curled fingers. When wound, she nods her head back and forth as though intently watching her handiwork, and her hands move to and fro in a realistic knitting manner, while music plays. Condition: generally excellent, mechanism and movement function well. Comments: Roullet et Decamps, the automaton appeared in their catalog as #265, "Vielle Tricoleuse" (old lady knitting), circa 1890. Oil Painting on Canvas, "Dolls with Toy Duck and Chicks", Ritta Boemm, Circa 1915 2000/3000

Lot # 157 (Sale Order: 157 of 303)      

27" x 34" framed. Two Kathe Kruse dolls, boy and girl, are posed shyly as they watch a long-beaked duck and four little yellow chicks at their feet; a vase is posed nearby suggesting that the scene takes place on a table top. The girl is holding up her skirt hem as though worried that the duck is about to nip her. The painting is signed Ritta Boemm. The Hungarian-born artist (1868-1948) was noted for her genre still-life paintings of homey scenes, and discovering the Kathe Kruse dolls sometime about 1910, she realized how fittingly they could be incorporated into her own art, creating a life-like sense into an otherwise still life. A small series of the paintings was created by the artist about 1915. This is in excellent original condition, framed....more

A classic still-life vignette is arranged on a table, featuring two early dolls by Kathe Kruse in their original country costumes, standing alongside a vibrant arrangement of sunflowers and other brilliant fall flowers. The costumes are well-detailed including fabric designs and trims. The painting is signed Ritta Boemm. From the series of oil paintings by the Hungarian-born artist (1868-1948) featuring the early dolls of Kathe Kruse. All-Original Musical Automaton "Little Girl with Kitten and Doll" by Leopold Lambert 8500/12,500

25" (64 cm.) Standing upon a lush velvet covered wooden platform with silk braid and fringe trim, is a bisque-head doll with blue glass paperweight eyes, lushly-painted lashes, brush-stroked brows, accented nostrils, closed mouth with richly-shaded lips, pierced ears, brunette human hair wig over cork pate, French carton torso and legs, wire upper arms, bisque forearms. She holds a bisque-head doll in her right hand and a ball-on-string suspends from her left hand. A papier-mache kitten lies in wait on the "carpet" floor. When wound, she turns her head from side-to-side and forward, and then lifts the ball-on-string up and down to tease the kitten; the kitten paws tentatively at the ball, then pauses and then leaps to the ball in a realistic manner. Music plays throughout. Condition: generally excellent, music and mechanism function well. Marks: Depose Tete Jumeau 7 (and artist checkmarks, head) L.B. (head). Comments: Leopold Lambert, circa 1890, the larger size, quality music box, and complicated synchronized movements indicate the luxury nature of this automaton by his firm. Rare French Musical Automaton "Seated Lady with Mandolin" by Leopold Lambert 12,000/18,000

Lot # 174 (Sale Order: 174 of 303)      

24" (60 cm.) A bisque-head lady with blue glass paperweight eyes, painted lashes and brows, closed mouth, pierced ears, blonde mohair wig, carton torso and legs, hinged hips, wire upper arms, bisque forearms, is seated upon a white pedestal wooden stool, a wooden mandolin in her arms. When wound, she turns her head from side-to-side and nodding in a complicated manner, while strumming the mandolin, and periodically tapping her foot to the music that is playing. Condition: generally excellent, music and mechanism function well. Marks: 8 (incised on doll) L.B. (key). Comments: Leopold Lambert, a variation of #49 featuring a clown with guitar that was shown in an early catalog of the company; although both pieces showed the identical distinctive stool, and were described as having a "rich costume of silks and laces", with same pose and leg movement, the clown differed by having a papier-mache head which allowed tongue and eye movement, and appeal to a different market, circa 1885. Value Points: very rare and large automaton with extraordinary original costume of rose satin with applique, bead and velvet trim, pom-poms, delightful confection of a bonnet, and beautifully-crafted mandolin, in wonderful state of preservation....more
