This Smith & Wesson DA-45 Model 1917 revolver comes with a Archives Letter stating that it was shipped on December 6, 1929. It was sold thru the William Hoegue Company, Los Angeles, California, in an order of twenty-five M1917s in the same configuration and delivered to the Los Angeles Police Department. This revolver is numbers matching - barrel, butt frame, cylinder and extractor star. The underside of the grips are not matching (marked 165400) which the Archives Letter explains is not unusual and are most likely still original to the gun. SPECS: DA/SA trigger, blued finish, smooth walnut grips, 5.5" barrel, fixed notch & groove rear sight, forged round blade front sight, lanyard ring, grooved front & rear straps, casehardened hammer with checkering, grooved casehardened trigger and 6-shot swing-out cylinder. CONDITION: This revolver is in good condition with surface wear, has an excellent sharp/ clean bore and appears to be in good working order. HISTORY: The Smith & Wesson Model 1917 revolver is a significant piece of American military history, primarily known for its use during World War I. Developed to supplement the standard M1911 pistol, it was chambered for the .45 ACP cartridge and featured a unique moon clip system to accommodate the rimless round. The S&W M1917, along with the Colt New Service, was one of two revolvers adopted by the U.S. Military as the M1917. The first U.S. deliveries of the S&W Model 1917 revolvers were made in October, 1917, and production continued until 1919. While many revolvers were produced, only about half made it to the front lines by the end of the war with many subsequently stored and later used in World War II. The Model 1917's success led to the development of other N-frame revolvers by Smith & Wesson, including the Model 29 .44 Magnum, which gained notoriety through the movie "Dirty Harry". SHIPPING - We offer free shipping anywhere within the continental US. All firearms must be sent to an FFL (or C&R if applicable) regardless of age or caliber. This includes antiques & muzzleloaders. PLEASE READ ALL TERMS BEFORE PARTICIPATING: There is no live crowd, no phone bidding, no left bids and we do not accept payment through the mail.
