Marlin Ballard Special Order Off Hand Target Rifle

Lot # 26 (Sale Order: 26 of 711)

serial #21781, 32-40, 34" part round part octagon barrel with a bright excellent bore. This rifle is basically a plain jane 6 1/2 off-hand rifle with a part octagon barrel and plain uncheckered stocks with no cheekpiece. The rifle has all matching numbers on action, barrel, forend, stock, buttplate and stock tang. The rifle is equipped with factory adjustable double set thick triggers, full loop lever and a short prong Swiss buttplate. The condition of the rifle is lovely. The barrel retains about 90% evenly thinning original blue finish which is just beginning to blend with a smooth brown patina in some areas. The action retains 80% original color case hardened finish which has just softened slightly and has a lovely appearance. There is some light oxidation staining on the left side of the action. The plain pistolgrip walnut buttstock has no cheekpiece and rates excellent plus with 95% original finish remaining. The forend does not have a horn tip and ends in a simple and subtle walnut schnabel. The rifle has a rear sight dovetail which is unusual but with the other special order features it is likely a factory slot. The rifle is sighted with a globe front, spirit level in rear seat and a high quality modern mid-range Vernier tang mounted peepsight. A lovely, honest and unusual Ballard rifle. Rare And Superb Frank Wesson No. 1 Long Range Rifle

Lot # 40 (Sale Order: 40 of 711)

serial #14, 32-40, 30" part round part octagon barrel with a bright excellent bore. This magnificent rifle was the recipient of the prestigious NRA Ten Best Weapons Medallion at the April 1985 NRA Annual Meetings held in Seattle. The barrel marking is different than the other known examples being stamped "F. WESSON MAKER / Worcester, Mass" rather than the long hand engraved barrel inscription commonly found on these rifles; this barrel marking is commonly found on the No. 2 rifles. The rifle is fitted with a full length Malcolm telescopic sight mounted in the only two dovetails in the barrel. Because of the barrel marking and because the top tang is drilled for the long range tang sight normally found on these rifles and that fact that the holes for a heel position tang sight have been neatly filled, some feel that this rifle was re-barreled by Wesson when this telescopic sight was added. The action, lock, hammer and lever all show wonderful 19th century loose floral scroll engraving with beautifully executed wolf's head on the hammer and a nice area of scroll on the heel of the buttplate. The condition of the rifle is spectacular with the barrel retaining 97% original blue finish and the action and lock showing 95% strong original color case-hardened finish. The Malcolm scope still has its original lens caps, the front may be a period replacement, the rear is clearly original and retains 95% of its original brown finish. The checkered pistolgrip buttstock and forend are of highly figured American black walnut and rate excellent with 95% of their original finish remaining. The checkering remains sharp and the forend and pistolgrip are both capped in horn. The original checkered steel shotgun buttplate is present with screws still indexed perfectly. There are 13 known No. 1 Long Range rifles, the highest observed serial number is 17, several of the known guns are not numbered. This rifle is the highest number and likely the last one made with a wedge fastened forend, the two known guns with higher numbers (15 and 17) both have screw fastened forends. This rifle is illustrated and discussed on pages 210 and 211 in volume three of the three volume set of books Frank Wesson Gunmaker. A stunning, investment quality, award winning Wesson Long Range target rifle. Suitable for those who enjoy owning the very finest antique American sporting arms. The checkered pistolgrip walnut buttstock and forend rate excellent overall with the exception of some expected handling marks from the years and a couple of small areas of lightly faded varnish as well as a two inch crack on the forend that wraps around from the center forend latch to the high rear left edge; the checkering remains crisp as the day it left New Haven. The length of pull from the single trigger to the checkered butt measures to a short 13" on this attractive little shotgun with drops of 1 1/2" and 2". A custom brown leather luggage-style case has been made for Mrs. Hines, marked "BBH" on the outside with a metal plate on the inside marked "MRS. RALPH J. HINES / 33 EAST 66TH ST. / NEW YORK". Included are a wooden cleaning rod, snap caps, cleaning implements and a lovely bone spare parts bottle with screw-off top. This Model 21 would be an ideal choice for the advanced female or youth double gun enthusiast or collector of unique shotguns. (156520-2412) {C&R} [Richard "Stretch" Kennedy Collection]

Winchester Model 1894 Trapper Carbine

Lot # 50 (Sale Order: 50 of 711)

serial #812956, 25-35 WCF, 15" barrel with a very good bore with very light pinprick pitting. It is rare to find an 1894 trapper in such fine condition as this. The barrel and magazine tube retain 75-80% original blue finish with a bit of silvering at the muzzle and some light thinning primarily along the top of the barrel with some very faint oxidation staining present in a few spots. The frame has mostly toned to a pewter-brown with some scattered patches of oxidation staining; there is a small amount of original blue remaining on the left side surrounding the saddlering stud. The hammer and lever display a nice even pewter-brown patina throughout with no case-hardened color remaining. The plain straight grip gumwood buttstock and forend rate good to near very good overall with some added finish and expected dings and dents from the years. A fine 1/2" crack cuts the corner of the top right edge of the wrist at the elbow of the upper tang and frame. The standard blade front sight and rear ladder style carbine sight are featured. Overall a superb example of a Trapper Carbine in a state of condition that far surpasses most of its counterparts. Listed by serial number in the BATFE "Firearms Curios or Relics List" as exempt from the provisions of the NFA and classified as C&R. (156520-3380) {C&R} [Richard "Stretch" Kennedy Collection]
