Rare Colt Model 1855 British Carbine

Lot # 207 (Sale Order: 207 of 711)

serial #11999, 56 cal., 21" part octagon part round barrel with a bright mostly excellent bore which shows a few very sparsely scattered spots of light oxidation and perhaps a light pit here and there. This is a lovely gun. The barrel retains about 90% plus strong original blue with a few very minor handling marks and light muzzle wear. The cylinder retains about 50% blue with the balance flaked to a plum brown patina; the chambers retain most of their original factory blue finish with the edges of the nipples still crisp indeed there being strong traces of original blue in the flash recesses. The frame retains about 85% plus original blue with the areas of loss being long lengthwise lightly flaked striations of pewter and brown, the right side of the barrel frame showing some extremely light abrasion, likely from steel wool. The hammer retains nearly all of its original color case-hardening which is quite brilliant in the protected areas. The cylinder pin shows a lovely original blue and the triggerguard has toned to a pleasing tarnished ocher patina, the loading lever a mottled smoky case-hardened gray with strong colors at its root. The buttplate retains generous silverplate which shows a bit of polishing, now starting to re-acquire a dull slightly tarnished patina, worn through to pewter at the sharp edge around its periphery. The buttstock rates excellent showing a very old restored finish with some minor dings and light handling marks; the wood still mostly proud of the metal at the frame and the checkering crisp. The barrel features a correct brass front sight and military style 3-leaf, two folding, one standing, rear sight graduated in 100, 300 and 500 yards increments. The frame's top strap is marked "Col. Colt Hartford Ct. USA" while the left side of frame has standard patent markings which remain crisp as is the patent marking in the cylinder flute. The barrel and flutes of cylinder exhibit British proofs and the left side retains its original saddlering and stud. The buttstock is numbered "11199" clearly a factory error, the buttplate is correctly numbered, as are the barrel and triggerguard tang "11999". The cylinder is numbered "1694" and its spindle is numbered "10940/0028". It is not at all unusual for these British model carbines to be mismatched; this example is in the correct serial number range between 10000 and 12000 (perhaps even being the very last British carbine made). The gun is crisp and mechanically functional and really appears to have seen little or no use "across the pond". Former collection Bill Spicer; Robert Howard Estate Collection (36433-2) {ANTIQUE}

Winchester Model 1892 Special Order Saddlering Carbine

Lot # 208 (Sale Order: 208 of 711)

serial #673341, 38 WCF, 20" round barrel with half magazine and a very good bore. The barrel retains 80% original blue finish showing some scattered oxidation staining and areas thinning to a light pewter; the muzzle is silvering and there are a couple of light scratches in the finish. The frame retains about 40% original faded blue finish with the carry point being the most toned to pewter as well as the entire lever; there are several patches of oxidation staining giving the remaining finish a brownish-blue hue. The lower tang still holds a strong amount of finish and there is a round wear mark on the frame due to the saddle ring rubbing the metal from over the years. The plain straight grip walnut buttstock and forend rate very good overall with some expected handling marks and dents from the years and light remnants of what looks like residue from a sticker on the right side of the buttstock near the buttplate. Made in 1912, this is a fantastic little special order carbine that has some honest wear but is nicely configured. (156520-3718) {C&R} [Richard "Stretch" Kennedy Collection]

Winchester Model 1894 Special Order Saddlering Carbine

Lot # 209 (Sale Order: 209 of 711)

serial #343691, 38-55 WCF, 20" round barrel with a very good bore. The barrel and special order half-length magazine retain 90% thinning original blue finish with some even oxidation staining throughout. The frame and lever retain about 30% thinning original blue finish with most areas toned to a mottled pewter-brown patina with a few small areas lightly pitted and scattered oxidation staining. There are two semi-circular sections of missing finish due to the saddle ring rubbing on the metal over the years. The plain straight grip gumwood buttstock and forend rate good overall with numerous dings and scratches from several years afield; there are five uniform notches that were put into the stock just behind the tang. An honest saddle ring carbine that would be a worthy investment piece for the 1894 collector. (156520-3125) {C&R} [Richard "Stretch" Kennedy Collection]

Rare Colt Model 1855 First Model Sporting Rifle

Lot # 215 (Sale Order: 215 of 711)

serial #274, .36 cal., 24" round barrel with a bright excellent bore showing sharp rifling. The barrel retains about 70-75% plum-tone faded original blue with the flaked areas a deeper brown showing toning to pewter on the sharp edges and at the muzzle. The barrel shows scattered light pitting primarily along its left edge, primarily in the area of the cleaning rod, also with some sparsely scattered light pitting along its right side and lower radius. The frame retains a similar amount of blue, the frame flats with strong bright original blue, the balance flaked to a brown with pewter on the high edges; the long lower tang of the triggerguard is primarily a pewter and soft brown. The cylinder is primarily a pewter and speckled plum patina retaining nearly all of its original cylinder scene, slightly light in a few spots but with the "Colts Patent/No 274/Sporting Rifle" still fully visible. The stock rates very good plus to near excellent with much original varnish showing some minor dings and handling marks from the years and some light flaking finish with a tiny sliver missing adjacent to the triggerguard tang. The wood is still proud of the metal and the early style crescent buttplate is a mottled gray and brown patina. Miraculously the gun retains its original side mounted cleaning rod and oiler; the spring-loaded oiler still functioning perfectly. The original sporting rear and front sights are in place and the barrel address is sharp. The numbers are matching on frame, barrel, loading lever, triggerguard tang, cylinder, arbor and buttplate "274" and the buttstock is appropriately pencil-numbered to the gun. An antique pencil marking within the lower tang inletting reads "N.C.Raven Feb 19/54". The action is crisp and mechanically functional and a couple of the screw heads show some very minor damage but a very attractive rifle overall. Only approximately 1,000 of these early rifles were manufactured and they exceedingly difficult to find in this fine state of preservation especially with rod and oiler. (36433-1) {ANTIQUE}

Sharps New Model 1863 Cartridge-Converted Carbine Used In The Film The Outlaw Josey Wales

Lot # 216 (Sale Order: 216 of 711)

serial #21585, 50-70 converted to 45-70 blank. This carbine was formerly the property of Stembridge Gun Rentals and was rented to Clint Eastwood's Malpaso Productions on invoice #1181 as was used by the Union soldiers who fired at Wales as he rode through their camp. The left side of the barrel is stamped with a large letter "S" which was Stembridge's property mark next to "K 10 CAV" which would suggest the carbine was once used by the Army's "Buffalo Soldiers" during the Indian Wars. The metal bears an overall dull pewter-brown patina with some minor handling marks and specks of fine oxidation. The priming cover below the hammer has been removed and the front sight insert and rear sight elevator are no longer present. The buttstock has a long chip missing along the heel on the left side of the stock along with smaller chips at the toe, top and bottom of the wrist, which also shows an old repair at the rear tang with small iron tacks and an abundance of other handling marks and dried faded finish. The forend is in similar condition with a long glued crack in the left side of the forend, lightly chipped edges and an abundance of light handling marks easily attributed to the use of the gun. The carbine was purchased from High Noon Auctions who sold other firearms and accessories used in the movie. Included with the carbine is a copy of Stembridge invoice listing the carbine by serial number along with dozens of other firearms rented to Mr. Eastwood's company and a certificate of authenticity from Stembridge Rentals describing the carbine and company. A great opportunity to acquire a carbine used in one of the all-time classic Western films. (56892-41) {ANTIQUE}
