Winchester Model 1866 Lever Action Musket

Lot # 151 (Sale Order: 151 of 1099)

serial #50327, 44 RF, 27" round barrel with a very good plus to near excellent bright bore. This musket bears a Birmingham 1971 date stamp on the belly of the action just to the rear of the forend which appears as stylized crossed swords with the letters "W" and "B" to the left and right and the number "2" beneath. Additionally the left side of the frame is marked "308" and the left side of the butt is also stamped "308". There is also an illegible stamping in the lower edge of the buttstock just behind the tang that appears to read "FABBE""" or "FARRE""". The barrel and magazine retain an even gray patina with scattered patches of pitting present however, the barrel markings remain fully legible. The action shows a very nice rich ochre patina with the edges showing just a tiny bit of wear and with some scattered light marks from the years. The hammer and lever are the same color and in the same condition as the barrel. The plain walnut buttstock and full length forend rate very good with the normal handling marks and bruises you would expect to see on a 115 year old gun and still has well defined edges, nice fit and perhaps some old added light oil finish. The brass military style buttplate shows the same patina as the frame and the gun retains its original sling swivels. The military style front sight/bayonet lug is present along with the original rear sight with the graduated staff broken off and the fixed side present. Overall a good solid 1866 musket with interesting rack numbers, obviously used by some type of organization. (17249-172) {ANTIQUE}

Winchester Model 1866 Saddle Ring Carbine

Lot # 152 (Sale Order: 152 of 1099)

serial #75602, converted to 44 CF, 20" round barrel with full magazine and a bore that shows even pitting and visible rifling its entire length. This salty old '66 has a lot of character. The barrel and magazine retain an even gray brown patina with scattered areas of pitting and with markings no longer visible. The frame retains a relatively even and mellow patina with somewhat softened edges and with lever and sideplate screws being replaced by machine screws with brass nuts on the right side. The plain walnut buttstock and forend rate near very good with some old added finish present and with scattered light handling marks. There is a chip at the frame on right side of wrist and a small sound crack at top tang. The carbine is equipped with a rifle buttplate, like some '66 carbines are; it is correctly numbered to the rifle and is original. Original standard carbine sights are present. A couple of proper replacement screws would really enhance this generally quite honest old yellow boy. (17292-58) {ANTIQUE}

British Air Service-Raf Contract Colt 1911 Pistol

Lot # 154 (Sale Order: 154 of 1099)

serial #W100007, 455 Eley, 5" British proofed barrel with a bright excellent bore showing some chatter marks on the lands from the rifling process for about 1". The pistol retains about 98 to near 99% excellent quality (really museum grade) restored blue finish. The factory markings remain crisp, a few very likely refreshed during the restoration, showing crossed pennants, broad arrow and GWR Stedman"s inspectors marking. The diamond checkered walnut grips rate excellent showing a bit of oil staining, primarily around the stock screws. A correct "Cal .455/Eley" marked two-tone magazine is included, it rates excellent as-restored as well. The included factory letter shows this arm shipping in February of 1918 with 300 other guns to Connop Guthrie, London (Guthrie was the Special Representative of the British Shipping Controller in America, that office in charge of shipping all government supplies from the United States to Great Britain). Overall an exceptionally nice as-restored British contract 1911 pistol. (37251-1) {C&R}

Outstanding U.S. Model 1898 Krag Rifle By Springfield Armory Issued To The 7Th U.S. Volunteer Infant

Lot # 155 (Sale Order: 155 of 1099)

serial #128232, 30-40 Krag, 30" barrel with a bright excellent bore. The barrel retains 95% original blue, the loss is due to some light fading, few handling marks and some muzzle wear at the bayonet attachment point. The front and rear bands show nearly all their original blue with only a couple of light rub marks and the triggerguard retains 95% original blue with just light rub wear on the bow of the guard from the sling and a few small scuffs. The receiver retains some strong traces of dull mottled oil quenching with the races still honed bright showing only some light staining, the left edge of the receiver flaking to brown (it appears much darker under normal ambient light). The magazine cover shows excellent oil quenched mottled case-hardening with minor very light handling marks, the magazine gate is in a similar state of condition with nice mottled oil quenched case-hardening toning to pewter only on the sharp edges and contact points. The bolt body and handle still remain bright, the knob toning only very slightly showing remnants of some very light surface oxidation. The extractor retains nearly all its pale fire blue with only the slightest wear on the sharp edges while the bolt shroud and safety have strong oil quenched colors, the striker a dark blue-gray toned to pewter on its rear face. The stock and handguard rate excellent and are an overall deep rich red russet showing light, very sparsely scattered handling marks from the years. There is a light left side 1898 cartouche, it is unmolested and merely filled with oil and handling grime from the years, the serifed P firing proof is in a similar state of condition. The buttplate shows only trace original blue with some light oxidation on its tang. The rifle is equipped with an 1896 rear sight and correct handguard. An original 1 1/4" military sling is included, it remains mostly supple and flexible with light flaking, very nearly worn through at a couple of the sling hook holes, it is "Rock Island Arsenal" and "EHS" inspected; a nice brass muzzle/front sight protector is included as well. The Springfield Research Service serial number lists show this rifle as being issued in 1899 to Company A, 7th U.S. Volunteer Infantry, one of the "immune regiments" composed of African-American men from Missouri, Arkansas and Tennessee. The 7th was organized and mustered into service at Jefferson barracks Missouri in July 1898. They proceeded to Lexington Kentucky then to Macon Georgia where they mustered out in February 1899, losing 16 enlisted men and 1 officer to illness, 11 men deserted and 3 murdered. Really a stellar antique Krag from-which it would be hard to upgrade with the added bonus of being issued to one of these very interesting "immune regiments". (37329-6) {ANTIQUE}

German P.08 Luger Pistol By Krieghoff With Luftwaffe Markings

Lot # 156 (Sale Order: 156 of 1099)

serial #4966, 9 mm, 4" barrel with a bright very good plus bore which shows strong rifling but with some light frosting, more prevalent near the throat. The metal surfaces retain about 98 to near 99% excellent quality restored blue with the trigger, ejector and sear spring polished bright. The toggle is marked with the HK/anchor "Krieghoff/Suhl" trademark, the chamber is 1936-dated and the few numbered parts are all matching. The grooved firing pin is un-numbered but is marked with the Eagle/2 Luftwaffe parts stamp as are many of the small parts. The bolt shows both Luftwaffe acceptance and test proofs as does the right side of the receiver and barrel. The checkered brown plastic grips rate excellent, they are un-marked. Included with the arm is a modern blued-bodied, wood-based magazine that is completely unmarked (correct Haenel magazines are plentiful). A rare Luger, neatly polished when the restoration was done, it is not beyond the bounds of professional restoration with a rust rather than hot immersion blue and a refinishing of the straw and blue tempered parts; the toggle marking remaining crisp, the chamber date slightly light in a couple spots. Lot # 157 (Sale Order: 157 of 1099)

serial #343124k, 32 ACP, 3 1/4" barrel with a bright excellent bore. The metal surfaces on this nice wartime Eagle N-proofed pistol retain about 98% original nickel plate, the loss is due to overall tiny bubbling on the right side of the pistol and leading and bottom edges from having lain in a presentation case. The slide number is not readily discernible, the arm appears to have been together since new. The black checkered plastic grip with Walther banner rates about very good with overall light dings and handling marks. The pistol comes in a Walther presentation case with blue pebbled faux leather covering and burgundy baize lined interior with a burgundy linen lid lining with silver Walther banner. The gun seems to function well mechanically. A later Mec-gar magazine with finger rest is included. (37339-1) {C&R}

Winchester Model 1894 Lever Action Rifle

Lot # 161 (Sale Order: 161 of 1099)

serial #298292, 30 WCF, 26" barrel with a bright very good plus to near excellent bore which shows strong rifling but with a few spots of light frosting and a few very widely scattered light pits. The barrel and magazine tube retain a nice 97% original blue, the loss is due primarily to some light fading, some muzzle wear and the very light scuffs or handling marks one would expect from the years, the nosecap has toned to a plum brown. The receiver remains nice retaining about 85-90% original blue, the loss is due to toning to brown on the carry point, top radius and light flaking; the loading gate shows some vibrant pale fire temper blue. The hammer retains some very good color case-hardening which is vibrant in spots with the lever retaining about 50%, toned to a brown and pewter along its radius; the buttplate shows some remnants of smoky case colors. The butt and forend rate very good plus with nearly all their original varnish, the expected minor dings and handling marks from years of use, the forend showing more finish loss; there is a 1" crack beginning at the leading edge of the stock at the left of the upper tang. Remington Whitmore Model 1873 Hammer Lifter Double Shotgun

Lot # 168 (Sale Order: 168 of 1099)

serial #1034, 12 ga., 28" barrels with lightly pitted bores choked improved cylinder and cylinder. This shotgun shows the absolutely wonderful engraving that Remington guns of this vintage are known for. There are no game scenes, only superbly executed relief scroll in perhaps 50% coverage or maybe a little better. The opening lever, hammers and triggerguard also show this lovely scroll as does the buttplate, forend metal and wedge escutcheons. The forend wedge is superbly fit so the head of the wedge nestles into the escutcheon fitting flush. The barrels retain lots of original brown finish blending with a pleasing brown patina with very good to excellent damascus pattern showing their entire length. The action and locks are a perfectly smooth and pewter, the result of color case hardening fading and in areas mixing with a smooth gray patina. The checkered round knob pistolgrip buttstock and forend are both refinished with freshened checkering. The buttstock does not fit perfect with some gaps at rear of locks, particularly on the left side. The shotgun locks up tight and the metal is in very nice condition. A nice example of Remington's superb 19th century engraving. (17256-2) {ANTIQUE}

Remington Whitmore Model 1875 Lifter Combination Gun

Lot # 169 (Sale Order: 169 of 1099)

serial #1220, 10 ga. by .40 cal centerfire (cartridge is a bottleneck rather than straight-wall), 30" barrels with an about very good shotgun bore which has been lightly honed and shows remnants of minor pitting and a very good rifle barrel which shows strong evident rifling but sparsely scattered minor pitting. The barrels are correct in every respect and were made as a combination gun and exhibit the appropriate Remington rear sight with step elevator and correct single blade front sight dovetailed in a screw-on base; the top rib is appropriately maker marked. The barrels are an overall deep pewter and very light brown patina with some sparsely scattered oxidation staining. The frame is also a dark gray pewter and brown patina with minor oxidation staining and some very light pitting. The lockplates and hammers are a mottled gray and blue patina, also showing remnants of some very minor pitting. The smooth round knob English walnut buttstock rates very good plus showing a couple light cracks and older, nicely repaired cracks beneath both lockplates also with minor dings and handling marks. The splinter style English walnut forend rates near excellent as well; the forend and iron are very old and fit very well but do not appear to be of Remington manufacture although the forend iron is serial numbered to the gun. The locks are rebounding and seem to be mechanically functional. The barrel has light lateral and vertical play with a very tiny sliver of light visible between the breech face and standing breech. Some of the screw slots show damage and the frame pin has a center punch mark on one end. Overall a very good, very honest example of these rare Remington combination rifle-shotguns.
