Wonderful William Schaefer of Boston Boxlock Two Barrel Set Doublegun

Lot # 4 (Sale Order: 4 of 821)

serial #3594, 10 ga., 28" barrels are choked .003" and .008" and 30" barrels choked .019" and .019". Both sets of barrels are of magnificent Bernard twist steel and all bores are bright and excellent. This shotgun is virtually identical to a Prussian Daly, the barrels bear the crossed pistol mark of H.A. Lindner of Suhl an this gun came here at least as a barreled action and perhaps a finished product. The quality and condition are superb. Each of the barrel ribs feature Lindner's distinctive hand matting with open fields on the ribs being engraved "WM. R. SCHAEFER & SON BOSTON Superior Quality". The action features lovely tight scroll engraving in about 75% coverage. The triggerguard and top lever are also engraved as are the doll's head rib extensions and barrels and there is a geometric border around the circumference of barrel breeches. The shotgun was made with individual forends for each set of barrels and the forend metal is engraved in tight scroll and geometric patterns. The condition of the gun is fabulous with both sets of barrels showing vivid Bernard damascus pattern their entire lengths. The action retains about 95% original color case-hardened finish which has softened mostly on the belly with more contrast on the sides. The belly still shows subtle color with the balance faded to a German silver color. The checkered round knob pistolgrip and both splinter forends are of beautifully figured French walnut and rate excellent retaining 95% original finish and with crisp original checkering. Both forends have lovely horn inlaid tips and the shotgun features a 14 1/8" length of pull over its 1/2" checkered horn buttplate which has just very light moth damage on some of the edges; drops are 1 7/8" and 3 3/8". The shotgun comes in its original leather luggage style case with Schaefer label and purple baize lining. The lid of the case is embossed with the name "N.C. NASH" while the silver oval monogram plate in toeline of stock has full border engraving and a fancy "N" initial. Nathaniel Cushing Nash was a wealthy resident of Boston and heir to the Nash Sugar fortune. He was "deeply interested in shooting, yachting, fishing and hunting".The condition of the case is excellent. Colt Commercial Government Model Semi-Automatic Pistol

Lot # 6 (Sale Order: 6 of 821)

serial #C121224, 45 ACP, 5" barrel with a bright excellent bore. The metal surfaces retain about 98% original blue showing light fading to gray and brown flaking on the frontstrap with a bit of high edge and contact point wear. There are a number of small dings and impact marks on the slide in the area of the muzzle and a few very sparsely scattered very light handling marks here or there, the left side of the frame showing a very light reassembly scratch which barely breeches the blue. The diamond checkered walnut grips rate about excellent showing nearly all their original varnish but with a couple of dings or scratches within the diamonds around the stock screws, the right grip with a few compressed points. Included is an unmarked two-tone magazine which rates about excellent. Inspection of the frame reveals this to be a First World War-machined frame with the "heart-shaped" grip frame milling, no doubt rejected or not-yet inspected, after cancellation of the government contract, held-over for sale as a commercial pistol. Overall a very handsome example in a very fine state of condition. (38100-69) {C&R} [Walter "Walt" Rauch Collection]

Colt Commercial Government Model Semi-Automatic Pistol

Lot # 7 (Sale Order: 7 of 821)

serial #C140693, 45 ACP, 5" barrel with a bright about excellent bore which shows some very sparsely scattered very light frosting in the grooves. The metal surfaces retain about 95-97% original blue, the loss is due to wear to gray on the frontstrap, it would appear as though there were a bit of surface oxidation here at one point which was very lightly cleaned, the area now reacquiring a patina. There is some very light muzzle wear, a bit of high edge wear and the assorted extremely light, extremely sparsely scattered scratches here and there. The fully checkered walnut grips rate very good plus to near excellent showing only some very very light compression of some of the points. The barrel is completely unmarked but appears to be a Colt product, the slide is appropriately serial numbered to the gun and one very nice blued seven round magazine is included marked on its base plate "Colt/45 Auto.". A really very lovely example overall of a transitional-era 1911A1 which would be right at home in a purple hinge-top box. (38100-83) {C&R} [Walter "Walt" Rauch Collection]

Rare Engraved Adirondack Repeating Rifle by O.M. Robinson of Plattsburgh, New York

Lot # 15 (Sale Order: 15 of 821)

Description Update (3/15/17): Wood shows a 1/2" crack at front right and minor areas of flaking varnish

serial #162, 44 cf, 24" octagon barrel with three-quarter magazine and a very good bore. This is an interesting and intriguing Adirondack rifle. The top of breechblock is marked "PATd MAR. 10 .57 / EXTd FEB. 27. 71." and the barrel bears no markings other than the serial number. The action of his rifle features full coverage loose relief scroll engraving with punch dot shaded background which is original and typical of the style used by the Robinson firm. The left side of the action features a round panel with a depiction of a deer which is very "folky" and endearing. The top and bottom of action feature geometric patterns along edges with the same scroll in the centers. The brass buttplate is also engraved on top of tang and shows about half coverage on the rear part of plate. The barrel and magazine bear a pleasing even gray-brown patina with just a little scattered light surface oxidation present. Lead solder affixing magazine to barrel may have been reapplied long ago. The action retains about 95% original nickel plated finish which is faded to a lovely pewter color. The walnut buttstock features a handsome and dainty raised cheekrest and shows coarse, rudimentary checkering at wrist. While all Robinson rifles were supposedly manufactured in rimfire chamberings, this rifle may be an original centerfire version or could have had a period bolt alteration to centerfire. The rifle comes in a nice later canvas covered full length luggage style case. A very interesting and very rare highly embellished example of these desirable New York made repeating rifles. German P.08 S/42 Luger Pistol by Mauser

Lot # 19 (Sale Order: 19 of 821)

serial #9471l, 9mm, 4" barrel with a bright about excellent bore with only a hint of pinprick pitting along its length. The metal surfaces retain about 92-95% original blue, the loss due to fading on the straps and muzzle, and the rear of the frame on both sides has softened to a brown color and there is some pinprick pitting and oxidation on the top of the trigger on the right side. The toggle is marked with the "S/42" assembly code, the chamber is dated 1938 and all of the visible numbered parts are matching including the grooved firing pin; the serial number on the front frame flat is a different font than the rest of the parts, but the polish and bluing match and we feel that the frame was probably factory re-numbered. The checkered walnut grips rate very good with an overall flattening of the points and are stamp-numbered to the gun on their interior. Included is a single blue-bodied aluminum-based magazine numbered to the gun with a "+" and an "SE-63" acceptance stamp also stamped on the base which rates excellent with only minor fading of the blue finish. Prussian Model 1866 Needle Carbine

Lot # 22 (Sale Order: 22 of 821)

serial #82, 14mm, 19" barrel with a very good plus bore that shows scattered light pitting and freckling. The in-the-white barrel, saddle bar, bolt and receiver remain mostly bright with scattered light pitting and oxidation staining. The brass triggerguard, band, lower tang and buttplate are partially bright with scattered oxidation staining. The walnut stock rates good plus showing a few separations on left side of butt, scattered abrasions, dings, handling marks and scratches. The receiver is unmarked but the top saddle bar screw, bolt parts and barrel are all matching and the bolt and striker appear to function well. There is no firing pin/needle present, the bolt handle has a few light impact marks, the front band is slightly loose and the top saddle bear screw shows moderate slot damage. A very good example of a hard-to-find Prussian M66 carbine. (207879-267) {ANTIQUE} [Craig Brown Collection]

Rare Prussian Model 1857 Needle Carbine by Herzberg

Lot # 23 (Sale Order: 23 of 821)

serial #3101, 15mm, 15" barrel with a bright near excellent bore that shows some scattered frosting. The in-the-white receiver, lower tang, bolt and barrel of this 1870 dated carbine are beginning to turn a dull gray patina with scattered oxidation staining and a few dings on the barrel. The brass triggerguard and buttplate appear mostly bright with scattered dings, scratches and oxidation stains. The walnut stock rates very good with an older added coat of varnish, scattered dings, abrasions, scratches and handling marks. The lower buttplate screw is mismatched but the remaining screws appear to be numbered "1", and the other visible numbered parts are matching to the receiver. The right side of the stock is marked "B/1876", the receiver has an issue date of 1871 and the buttplate is marked with a unit marking that reads "22. D/3. 53". A fine example of a hard-to-find Prussian carbine. (207879-263) {ANTIQUE} [Craig Brown Collection]

Factory Engraved Sharps Model 1853 Sporting Rifle

Lot # 24 (Sale Order: 24 of 821)

serial #14638, 44 cal. (60 bore), 23 5/8" octagon barrel with a very good deeply rifled bore. The barrel length is unusual and if it was shortened it was done during the period of use and done very neatly as the muzzle shows as much age as any other part of the rifle. The rifle features extensive wonderful loose relief floral scroll with punchdot shaded background on the action, lock, hammer, barrel, lever, action tangs, patchbox and top of buttplate. The barrel shows proper three line Hartford address and proper patent markings appear on the lock and action. All markings remain clear and legible and all numbers are matching. The barrel bears a lovely mix of original brown finish and a gray brown patina, more gray on high edges. The action and lock are also a lovely even and smooth mix of original color case-hardened finish and a smooth patina with engraving remaining sharp and very crisp. The lower tang holds factory adjustable double set triggers which function properly. The plain walnut buttstock and forend rate very good plus with nice color and just normal light handling marks. The pewter nosecap is engraved with a name that appears to be "Jerome B. Mourbelt" but the spelling of the last name is somewhat difficult to decipher and it could be a variant of the name we listed. The rifle comes with a letter from Dr. R.L. Moore stating that the rifle was received into inventory on December 28, 1855 as an octagon barreled 1853 sporting rifle in 44 caliber and that it was indeed factory engraved. There is no mention of the double set triggers but they are mounted in the engraved lower tang and appear original in all respects. Factory engraved Sharps rifles are rare and this is a very honest and fine example. (18158-3) {ANTIQUE}

Prussian Model 1862 Needle Gun

Lot # 25 (Sale Order: 25 of 821)

serial #6, 15mm, 33 1/2" barrel with a very good bore that has a few areas of pitting but strong rifling. The receiver and barrel of this unmarked rifle have turned a dull brown patina with a couple light tool marks on right side of barrel underneath rear sight, some sparsely scattered pitting spots on barrel and receiver and oxidation staining on receiver. The bolt remains mostly bright with scattered areas of pitting and some tool marks on bolt knob and handle. The brass bands and triggerguard have turned a mottled yellow patina with some scattered oxidation staining and the lower tang also shows some moderate pitting and oxidation staining. The hardwood stock rates very good as-cleaned with a thin 1" crack at front of triggerguard, a 1" crack on either side of rear of receiver, a few light chips, scattered dings, scratches and handling marks. The rifle is equipped with a rear sight that is marked "5-600" and "7-800" and the barrel, bolt parts and screws are all matching to the receiver. There is no firing pin/needle present but the bands appear to be slightly loose. An honest example of a pivotal military rifle. (207879-274) {ANTIQUE} [Craig Brown Collection]
