Outstanding Winchester Model 1897 Riot Gun with Central Railroad Of New Jersey Markings

Lot # 1 (Sale Order: 1 of 699)

serial #260769, 12 ga., 20" plain barrel choked cylinder (marked CYL.) with a bright excellent bore. The metal surfaces on this outstanding shotgun retain about 97% original blue, the loss is due to some light wear near the muzzle where there are a few rub marks, high edge wear and operational wear on the magazine tube. There are the scattered light handling marks one would expect here and there from the years and there is some scattered light oxidation on the receiver, primarily on its belly near the serial number. The screw heads remain true and unmaligned with only one showing some very minor slot damage at the magazine tube hanger. There is very good pale fire temper blue on the trigger spring and the hammer has some very nice color case-hardening. The plain pistolgrip buttstock and grooved forend rate very good to very good plus with much original varnish and the expected minor dings and handling marks from the years. The stock shows drying cracks left and right at the receiver, each about 1 1/2" in length and there is one additional crack at the front of the forend. The right side of the buttstock has been neatly branded during the period of use "PM DEPT/CRR OF NJ/05", denoting "Paymaster Department, Central Railroad of New Jersey, (Gun) No. 5" . The arm, being an early 1897, was built as a solid frame and remains in very nice condition and operates well mechanically. A very nice early Winchester model 1897 Riot with some very cool railroad property markings. (38585-113) {C&R}

Stunning Winchester Model 12 Pigeon Grade Trap Slide Action Shotgun

Lot # 2 (Sale Order: 2 of 699)

serial #1968575, 12 ga., 30" rectangular post ventilated rib barrel with mid-rib ivory target bead and a bright excellent bore. The metal surfaces retain about 98% bright original blue with nice matting atop the receiver. The loss is due to some very light muzzle wear, some very light operational wear on slide bar and mag tube and light rub wear at the rear left of the triggerguard bow. The engine turned bolt and carrier are brilliant with only very light operational wear evident on the bolt. The checkered walnut capped pistolgrip Monte Carlo style stock and extended semi beavertail style forend rate excellent retaining all their original high-gloss finish and only a few very light, very very sparsely scattered handling marks, primarily along the toeline. The grade of wood on both pieces is stunning and if not exhibition grade is certainly AAA. The original grooved Winchester ventilated rubber recoil pad is in place giving a 14 1/4" length of pull. The gun mounts solidly and seems to function well mechanically. Really a stellar example of a late 1970-made Pigeon Grade Model 12 Trap, no doubt from the Winchester Custom Shop, in very seldom-encountered condition. (38682-1) {MODERN}

Exceptional Colt Detective Special Square Butt Revolver

Lot # 3 (Sale Order: 3 of 699)

serial #403067, 38 special, 2" barrel with a bright excellent, likely unfired, bore. The metal surfaces on this lovely early square butt revolver retain about 99% original blue, with no appreciable loss and perhaps one or two tiny handling marks here or there and a tiny spot of oxidation at top left frame. The bright-polished sides of the hammer remain brilliant as does the color case-hardening on the ejector rod head. The checkered walnut grips with silver Rampant Colt medallions rate excellent; they are un-numbered but their fit is perfect and they are clearly original to the gun. There is no flash evidence on the front face of the cylinder, no turn ring present, and the breech and forcing cone of the barrel remain brilliant in-the-white. The revolver comes in its original purple-tone hinge-top box numbered to the gun on the bottom with a boar bristle brush, "Special Instructions" cleaning pamphlet and test target pencil-numbered to the gun (the serial number has been re-penciled at some point and is slightly darker but is clearly an original number). The box itself rates very good plus with some very minor wear on the corners, a small tear on its rear spine and has the "Detective Special" surcharge label. An absolutely super example overall, likely unfired since leaving the blue dome in 1931. (38638-21) {C&R}

Colt Camp Perry Single Shot Target Pistol

Lot # 4 (Sale Order: 4 of 699)

serial #709, 22 LR, 10" barrel with a bright about excellent bore which may show a couple spots of very very light frosting. Barrel, yoke and "cylinder" retain about 97-98% original blue, the loss is due to some muzzle wear and remnants of some very light oxidation on the left side of the barrel, those areas a silvery gray with a couple very minor pinprick pits. The frame itself retains perhaps 95-97% original blue, the loss being primarily on the frontstrap and bottom of the triggerguard bow with some leading edge of the frame wear. The bright polished sides of the hammer remain mostly brilliant with some very light staining in the area of the spur. The checkered walnut grips rate very good plus to near excellent with only some minor handling marks, they are stamp-numbered to the gun; there is a tiny chip missing at the leading edge of the right grip. The revolver still functions well and lockup is good with very slight lateral play barrel-to-frame. A very nice example overall that will likely perform as well at the range as it will as an investment. (38638-4) {C&R}

Exceptional Winchester Pre '64 Model 70 Featherweight Bolt Action Rifle

Lot # 7 (Sale Order: 7 of 699)

serial #577856, 308 Win, 22" featherweight barrel with a bright excellent, likely unfired, bore. The metal surfaces on this beautiful rifle retain 99% plus original blue. There is no discernible wear, the only real loss being some extremely light operational wear on the receiver races, a few very light rubs on the bolt knob, a very light rub on the blued extractor and a tiny abrasion on the right side of the receiver near the serial number which does not breech the blue. The bolt body remains bright and is correctly DC pencil-numbered to the gun with the bolt face showing all its original blue and the feed ramp showing no evidence of having had a cartridge introduced. The checkered walnut pistolgrip Monte Carlo stock rates excellent to as-new with perhaps a couple very tiny handling dings on the right side of the butt. The original sights are intact as are the swivels and plastic checkered buttplate. The rifle appears very much unfired since leaving New Haven in 1963 and comes with what is likely its original hangtags. Both are Winchester Western Division Olin Mathieson Chemical tags, one the typical ovoid Model 70 Featherweight yellow, red and blue hangtag, the other is the manila bolt tag with the model and serial number in pencil; both show a couple of folds but are otherwise very good to excellent. An absolutely super featherweight that would be perfect in a period boxing. (38585-109) {C&R}

Rare Smith & Wesson .44 Hand Ejector 2nd Model Revolver

Lot # 8 (Sale Order: 8 of 699)

Description Update (3/14/18 and 3/22/18): No caliber markings on the right side; is a .455 HE frame, shipped in a special shipment of two guns to A&F in 1916

serial #46751, 45 Colt, 6 1/2" barrel with an excellent bore. The .44 Hand Ejectors 2nd Model were made mostly in 44 Special but small quantities trickled out in other calibers and are considered rare; it is reported that only 727 were made in 45 Colt. This revolver is not only chambered for a rare caliber but remains in grand condition retaining about 99% original blue finish with a faint turn ring on the cylinder, a very light oxidation stain on the backstrap and a few minor handling marks. The service style trigger and service hammer retain beautiful swirls of case-hardened color as does the lanyard loop. The diamond checkered walnut factory grips with gold S&W medallions are numbered to the gun and rate excellent. All appropriate parts are correctly numbered to the gun and function is excellent. The left side of the barrel has the company name with patent dates on the top, but no caliber markings on the right side. This gun has not seen much use and only lacks the factory box to "send it over the top". A beautiful 1935-made 2nd Model in a rare caliber that no collector should pass up. (88620-13) {C&R}

serial #3027, 10 ga. (2 5/8"), 30" damascus barrels choked a light full and a tight full with bright about excellent bores which show some very sparsely scattered remnants of perhaps some very light pinprick pitting or built-up wad residue. This is a stunning Lindner-made Daly. There are nice geometric engraved bands at the breeches and the dolls head extension has lovely scroll. "Charles Daly" is in riband on each frame flat and there is a lovely gun dog on the bow of the guard, a chamois on the belly of the frame and small gamebirds at the very front of the frame's belly; the quality of the engraving is stunning. The checkered round knob English walnut buttstock rates very good plus to near excellent with nearly all of its original varnish and some lovely grain figure, showing only the light dings and handling marks one would expect from a hunted arm. The grip features nice checkered panels as do the stock cheeks and the length of pull to the original checkered bone buttplate is 14 1/4" with drops of 1 3/8" and 2 1/2". The splinter forend is near fully checkered and rates very good as well, showing perhaps a bit more wear, with a nice bone forend tip, the iron and lever release showing the same exquisite engraving as the balance of the metal. The arm features double triggers, extractors, automatic safety and cocking indicators and locks up solidly with the top lever at dead center. Included with the arm is a leather luggage style case with green baize interior and ammunition carrier insert. The exterior rates about very good showing some old water staining, light flaking and small abrasions but with the stitching near fully intact. A brass monogram plate on the lid reads "L. Nichols Junior/Nahant". The interior of the lid features a William Read and Sons retailer label which may be a later replacement. The ammunition carrier holds 60 rounds of 10 ga. 2 7/8" #5 shot. Overall an absolutely lovely Prussian Daly, that likely still could be taken afield with its complement of #5s, perfect turkey medicine, a really stunning big bore Prussian boxlock double. Winchester Pre '64 Model 70 Alaskan Rifle

Lot # 13 (Sale Order: 13 of 699)

serial #535967, 375 H&H Magnum, 25" barrel with a bright excellent bore. The metal surfaces retain about 98% plus factory blue with the bolt body remaining bright.The bolt knob shows some light toning to gray and there is some very light operational wear on the bolt body, it is appropriately DC pencil-numbered to the gun on its underside. The checkered walnut Monte Carlo stock rates excellent with the expected very minor handling ding here or there, showing a bit of worn finish on some of the high edges, but it is overall very nice and has its original Winchester solid rubber recoil pad in place. The original front sight is in place, its hood is no longer present, the rear sight has been removed and a Lyman 48 WJ receiver sight has been installed in place in the factory holes, the stock is unaltered. The bottom metal retains its original polish in every respect while the barreled action was very neatly factory refinished at a later date and has the factory custom shop five-digit work order number stamped on its underside beneath the chamber. Oddly, the escutcheon for the forend/barrel screw has gone missing from the stock, but should be a very easy item to replace. Overall a very lovely Alaskan manufactured in 1961, the second year of the "Alaskan" moniker. (38585-78) {C&R}

serial #349144, 44-40 WCF, 5 1/2" barrel with a bright excellent bore. The metal surfaces on this nice large frame Colt retain 98-99% original blue, the loss is due to some extremely light high edge wear and a minute handling mark or two here and there. The checkered walnut silver medallion Rampant Colt grips rate excellent to as-new, they are un-numbered and fit precisely. The firing pin bushing shows virtually no wear, there is no flash evidence on the face of the cylinder and the forcing cone remains bright with hardened oil on its interior. There are a few minor dings on the crane and the frame just above it but they are very unobtrusive. The arm comes in its original purple-tone, hinge-top box, serial numbered to the gun on its underside, with onion skin wrap on the interior. The box rates very good to very good plus with minor scuffs here and there and separated seams at the corners of the lid, the end of label still very readable. Overall a really super New Service that appears to have seen little or no use since leaving the blue dome in 1940. (38659-29) {C&R}

Extremely Rare Colt Model 1911 Sample Pistol Furnished to Springfield Armory Pre-Production of the 1

Lot # 18 (Sale Order: 18 of 699)

serial #125567, 45 ACP, 5" Colt barrel with a bright about excellent bore which shows only some lightly scattered very light frosting about three quarters of its length. This is an exciting and very rare pistol for the advanced 1911 collector. Prior to Springfield Armory's production of the 1911 pistol, Colt did not have a complete set of up-to-date specification drawings to furnish to Springfield Armory. Colts rather relied on designated pistols and gauges to produce their pistols and component parts. It was therefore necessary for Springfield Armory to produce their own set of drawings based on 20 sample Colt pistols sent to them, which they actually had to purchase from Colts firearms. These arms were not serial numbered and were used by Springfield Armory to establish their own set of blueprint drawings for manufacture of the pistols and all the component parts. All 20 guns were disassembled, all the parts measured, an average taken, high and low end of the measurements were considered to be the manufacturing tolerances. These arms stayed with Springfield Armory until the end of the last Springfield production run, at which time they were stamped with the serial numbers 125,567-125,586, government inspected, and accepted as part of the Springfield Armory series of 1911-produced pistols. Colts very own records show "20 pistols not numbered" shipped to "Commanding Officer, Springfield Armory June 1, 1912". In the 19-teens and later in the '20s, many 1911 pistols were sold through the Director of Civilian Marksmanship, the sales being handled by the National Rifle Association. These model 1911 pistols were all marked "N.R.A." adjacent to the serial number on the frame, this example happens to be one of those "N.R.A."-marked guns, adding not only to its desirability but further to the rarity of the arm. The metal surfaces retain perhaps 70-75% original blue, showing even fading with wear to pewter gray along the high edges and contact points. The flat mainspring housing and frontstrap as well as the grip safety are a dull pewter and plum brown patina with remnants of some light oxidation present. The diamond checkered walnut grips rate very good to very good plus showing some light wear along the bottom edges along with some minor compressions or chipped points here and there. Included is a single two-tone, folded-base Springfield Armory lanyard loop magazine. As would be expected with these reference pistols, the arm is now mostly mixed parts (likely mostly original Colt) however the firing pin stop, sear and disconnector are all "S" stamped, additionally the mainspring housing pin is the very early style with both ends being domed, rather than the later pins which have one domed and one concave end; all parts are indeed early style consistent with their date of completion at Springfield Armory. The pistol is listed by serial number in The Model 1911 and Model 1911A1 Military and Commercial Pistols by Joe Poyer © North Cape Publications, and in Clawson's monumental work Colt 45 Service Pistols, as the very first of the 20 guns provided by Colt, which were serial numbered by Springfield Armory at the end of production. Additionally Springfield Research Service lists serial numbers 125,567-125,586 as "unnumbered pistols, shipping October 8, 1915, Springfield Armory". This arm is a singular rarity among Colt pistols, being one of only 20, provided by THE manufacturer of these venerable arms, to the Federal Government, pre-production of their 1911 runÉ.. The Springfield arms being sought-after pistols in their own right. Couple this with the fact that the arm was later marked and sold through the DCM by way of the N.R.A., this arm eclipses even Singer Sewing Machine-manufactured pistols in rarity. This is an extremely rare opportunity for the advanced Colt 1911 or martial pistol collector to acquire a very rare arm, an opportunity which will not likely be presented again for many decades. (38679-1) {C&R}

Rare Colt Officers Model Heavy Barrel Target Revolver

Lot # 21 (Sale Order: 21 of 699)

serial #643293, 32 Colt, 6" barrel with a bright excellent, likely unfired, bore. The metal surfaces on this lovely revolver retain about 98 to near 99% original blue, the only loss is some very light muzzle silvering with some very light fading in the area beneath the front sight. The bright-polished sides of the hammer show only the tiniest amount of oxidation staining in the area of the spur and right side of frame shows some very sparsely scattered, extremely light freckles of oxidation, they would not even warrant mention were this gun not nearly as-new. There is no wear on the face of the firing pin bushing, flash areas of the cylinder and both forcing cone and breech face remain bright and in-the-white. The arm is fitted with a Patridge style front sight and a square notch rear. The checkered walnut grips with silver Rampant Colt medallions rate excellent to as-new, they are un-numbered and fit precisely, each with one tiny ding on the flat portion of the butt. The revolver comes in an original purple-tone, hinge-top box, correctly labeled but re-numbered to the gun. Inside is an original boar bristle brush and Colts "Shooting Suggestions" pamphlet. The box itself rates otherwise excellent but for a minor split along the seam of the lid and another along the bottom seam, with the end label slightly detached, re-attached with cellophane tape. The end label shows the "Target/Heavy Barrel/Patridge Sight" surcharge with a ".32" surcharge on the lower end label. An absolutely super heavy barrel target overall in a rare and desirable chambering. (38659-12) {C&R}

Colt Officers Model Target Double Action Revolver

Lot # 22 (Sale Order: 22 of 699)

serial #27348, 22 LR, 6" barrel with a bright excellent bore. The metal surfaces on this third issue revolver retain about 99% original blue, the only appreciable loss being a series of light abrasions across the matted surface of the topstrap, which looks like it came in contact with the coiled steel portion of the original Colt boar bristle cleaning brushes, it certainly could easily be toned down by someone who knew their business. The bright-polished sides of the hammer remain brilliant with only some very sparse, very light remnants of oxidation staining. There is a tiny bit of wear on the lower front of the butt and the cylinder turn ring is so light it does not breech the blue. The arm is equipped with a Patridge front sight and square notch rear. The checkered walnut grips with silver Rampant Colt medallions rate excellent to as-new, they are un-numbered and fit precisely. The arm rides in its original purple-tone, hinge-top box, serial numbered to the gun on its underside. The box rates excellent with "Target" and "Patridge Sight" surcharges above the blue end label. An absolutely super Officers Model Target which saw very little, very careful use. (38659-53) {C&R}

The recoil spring guide is the early style with long sharp tips but all other parts appear to remain correct to period of manufacture. The pistol includes a single unmarked two-tone factory magazine with pinned base. This Government Model has seen modest use over the years and is a viable addition to any collection. serial #320442, 30-06, 24" 8-41 dated Springfield barrel with a very good bore that shows some frosting and a couple spots of light pitting. The gas cylinder and front sight retain 95% of an added black enamel finish with some flaking spots.
