Winchester Model 1892 Early Production Lever Action Rifle

Lot # 1 (Sale Order: 1 of 1114)

serial #21768, 32 WCF, 24" octagon barrel with a bright excellent bore. The barrel, magazine tube and nosecap retain about 97% original blue, the loss is due to some light fading, sharp edge wear and a bit of light wear at the muzzle, there are also the small, sparsely scattered handful of handling marks here or there but they are very unobtrusive. The receiver retains a similar amount of original blue, showing perhaps a bit more edge wear with some toning along its upper edges and the beginnings of the oft-seen length-wise Winchester striations. The lever shows some stunning original color case-hardening, nearly all of which remains, toning only in the radiused areas of the lever, with one small area of light pitting. The hammer as well shows some excellent original color case-hardening with strong blue on the trigger and pale blue on the loading gate. The buttplate as well shows strong smoky mottled case-hardening, primarily on its tang, more silvery on the butt portion. The smooth walnut buttstock and forend rate very good plus with much original varnish and the expected near overall very light handling marks from the years. The original silver blade front sight is intact as is the semi-buckhorn Rocky Mountain rear and a nice Lyman No. 1A tang sight is in place at the tang. Really a very nice 1892 overall, manufactured in the 2nd year of production. (38812-6) {ANTIQUE}

Excellent Marlin Model 36 Deluxe Lever Action Rifle

Lot # 4 (Sale Order: 4 of 1114)

serial #B9218, 30-30, 24" barrel with a bright excellent, likely unfired, bore. This is a lovely rifle. The barrel and magazine tube retaining 98-99% original blue, showing some minor fading and some very sparsely scattered light handling marks. The receiver and bolt retain 99% incredibly vivid color case-hardening, the lever a similar amount which is starting to tone only slightly, still exhibiting some very nice colors. The original silver bead front sight is intact, there is no hood present, and the original rear sight with step elevator is present. The face of the bolt still shows all its original color case-hardening and the gun very much appears unfired and unused since leaving New Haven. The right lower sharp edge of the receiver where the triggerplate fits shows some minor chipping to the sharp edge, it appears to have been there since day one and it is unobtrusive, actually missed at first glance. The tang is marked "Marlin/Model 1936". A superb example, almost never encountered in this fine a state of condition. (38785-3) {C&R}

Rare U.S. Model 1903 Springfield Coast Guard Line Throwing Gun

Lot # 24 (Sale Order: 24 of 1114)

serial #995825, 30 cal. blank, 24" smooth bore 5-29 dated barrel with a bright very good plus bore which shows scattered very light pinprick pitting. The metal surfaces on the arm retain perhaps 95% later dark gray-green parkerizing with sparsely scattered areas of very light surface oxidation here and there and one small spot of pitting on the underside of the barrel 2" from the muzzle. Made by Price Brothers Inc. of Frederick Maryland, the stock has been shortened just ahead of the rear barrel band, as has the handguard. The floorplate and magazine spring and follower have been removed as have the rifle's open sights. Price Brothers then affixed a line throwing canister to the underside of the arm utilizing the original rear band and an additional band which encompasses the forestock and handguard. The arm is ruggedly cased with the appropriate line throwing accessories. The stock itself rates very good showing an old light cleaning, no doubt done by Price Brothers themselves, who also affixed a 1" Hawkins recoil pad to the arm. There are the minor expected dings and handling marks here and there and the arm does show evidence of having been fired, with 2" cracks at the rear of the triggerguard left and right; the handguard with a couple of small cracks as well. The bolt shows a cleaned spot where it has been neatly electric DC-pencil numbered to the receiver, no doubt by the manufacturer. The arm comes in a heavy finger-jointed oak case black-stenciled on its lid "U.S. Coast Guard/Shoulder Line/Throwing Equipment" with the Price Brothers manufacturers plate affixed to the front edge of the lid. On the interior we find a complement of accessories including a half-dozen bronze and steel 13 ounce projectiles and a single 15 ounce projectile. There are three spools of Manila line and one empty spool, a single mallet, brass cleaning rod with brush and there are two boxes of Frankford Arsenal rifle grenade, caliber 30, blank cartridges included, both are partials, both have some damage to the boxes themselves. The case itself is very good plus with the expected dings, handling marks, chips here there and some light warping of the lid, complete instructions for use and operation of the arm are included affixed to the interior of the lid. In 1914 Price Brothers was formed, the partnership between Osborne and Joseph Price, initially producing brass, bronze and aluminum castings and machine products. From the inception of the corporation until 1935, the company's activities consisted of the manufacture of various electrical and mechanical devices. The U.S. Coast Guard continued to be an important consumer of its products comprising telescopic antennas, relays, controls, life line-throwing equipment, remote control apparatus and trainee communications equipment. The increase in business during the National Defense Preparedness Program resulted in considerable expansion in the operations between 1935 and 1938, they were eventually bought out just prior to the Second World War. This rifle is described in detail in Brophy's monumental work The Springfield 1903 Rifles and this exact rifle and its case are pictured on page 151 of that book. Overall this is a very nice, very rare , and published piece of United States Coast Guard history, quality-made throughout, with some very nice original accessories. Rare Winchester Hotchkiss First Model Navy Carbine

Lot # 25 (Sale Order: 25 of 1114)

serial #1497, 45-55 Govt. (45-70 Govt. with the lighter "carbine" charge of powder), 24" barrel with a bright excellent bore. The barrel shows perhaps 50% original blue, the areas of loss a pewter gray patina with overall light handling marks and scratches and a few areas of sparsely scattered light oxidation. The receiver retains excellent oil-quenched case-hardening with the bottom metal showing strong original blue. The bolt has faded primarily to a pewter and brown patina with remnants of some light pinprick pitting. The breech of the barrel shows the "U.S./(anchor)" marking with VP eaglehead proofs, the bolt Henry Nettleton-inspected. The stock rates about very good with much original varnish and overall light dings and handling marks with a ding and prominent chip at the toe. There is a very good circled P firing proof and remnants of the left-side oval cartouche and the obligatory right-side crack is present along with a chip to the rear of the receiver's tang which was re-affixed. The sling ring is in place on the left side of the stock and the cleaning rod is present in the nosecap trapdoor. Purportedly only 100 First Model Carbines were made for the United States Navy, this remains a very good example of these rare martial arms. (38752-16) {ANTIQUE}
