German C96 Large Ring Semi-Auto Pistol by Mauser Oberndorf with New York Retailer Markings

Lot # 26 (Sale Order: 26 of 952)

serial #31660, 30 Mauser, 5 1/2" barrel with an about good bore showing frosting in the grooves, light pinprick pitting and good rifling throughout. This is a very nice example retaining about 90% original blue with the sides of the frame and gripstraps toning to gray-brown patina, a few small dings at the high edges of the frame on the left side, freckling and handling marks. The large ring hammer is a pale gray patina while the bolt remains mostly bright showing some gray freckling. The extractor, bolt stop, rear sight slider and safety all show very strong remnants of fire blue with some pinprick pitting along the rear sight and overall silvering while the trigger retains some very nice pale straw color. All markings remain crisp and clear, the pistol is stamped with the appropriate commercial antler proof on the right side receiver and "(Crown) / (Crown) / U" on the left and the left side of the shallow-milled frame is American retailer-marked "VON LENGERKE / & DETMOLD / NEW-YORK". The 34-groove walnut grips are stamp-numbered to the gun and remain in very good condition showing scattered light dings and minor overall smoothing. All of the serialized parts are matching, the lanyard loop is intact and the action seems to function well mechanically. A very nice early commercial broomhandle retailed in this country. Lot # 29 (Sale Order: 29 of 952)

serial #450175, 32 ACP, 5" barrel with a bright near excellent bore. Pennsylvania Bicentennial Commemorative Flintlock Fullstock Rifle by Jack Haugh

Lot # 30 (Sale Order: 30 of 952)

No. 34 of 200, .50 cal., 43” swamped Bob Paris barrel with a bright excellent bore. Barrel and Siler lockplate retain all of their deep plum brown original maker finish. There is a nice German silver blade front sight with flat top v-notch rear and the top flat is signed in script “J Haugh”. Brass furniture includes nosecap, three faceted thimbles, tailpipe, faceted dual dovetailed guard and wide early faceted buttplate. There is no toeplate but the arm features a slightly engraved geometric sideplate and simple patchbox with urn or tombstone head and engraved square lid; release is in heel of butt. The rifle is stocked in a lovely grade of Pennsylvania curly maple by Haugh, these rifles were made by both Haugh and John Bivens, (with assistance from Mark Silver and Monte Mandarino who assisted Bivens in North Carolina). There is a full-length rib beneath the ramrod with light flourish island carving behind the tailpipe. Each stock flat is raised as well with dropper points at rear and a fleur-de-lis island to the rear of the tang. There is a lovely flourish of scroll with floral head at the rear of the wrist to the right of the point of comb and the left side of the stock has a nice grooved flat bottomed cheekpiece, flanked front and rear by exquisite carved open flowing scroll with decoration on the underside of the cheekpiece as well. Siler lock has bridled frizzen with faceted pan and there is a fancy single trigger with a rearward curlicue tip. The interior of the patchbox has the “Pennsylvania Bicentennial Commemorative Longrifle” plaque with the Pennsylvania Bicentennial seal and the rifle’s serial number “34”. An excerpt from the Indiana Evening Gazette, April 14, 1976 regarding the construction of these rifles states: “...components go to John Bivins of Winston-Salem NC and Jack Haugh of Friendship Indiana to be turned into completed rifles. Nearly 100 hours of hand work goes into the final assembly and finishing of each long rifle. Currently each gunsmith is working from 70 to 80 hours per week to meet the production goal of six rifles per month”. An exquisite engraved powderhorn, numbered to the rifle, was included with each gun, made by Tom White of Worthington Ohio. It features a semi-bulbous walnut plug with an extension lobe and is reduced near the nozzle in a scalloped pattern with dual medial rings as hanger provision, the spout nonagonally faceted. Prominently featured on the horn is the seal of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania with its state motto and it is numbered 34 of 200. A map of the eastern counties of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania is engraved on the periphery of the horn. Very ironically, these two hundred rifles caused a court case in which the IRS decided that an 11% excise tax was due on each rifle, a rule never before applied to custom gun makers who create hand-made rifles, certainly not of the antique blackpowder genre. Later court cases, and finally legislation exempted the rifles and overturned the ruling. The original patch worm and cleaning jag are included in the patchbox compartment. We have never seen another of these rifles offered for sale on the secondary market, this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to own two incredible works of art, created by men at the top of their crafts. Lot # 32 (Sale Order: 32 of 952)

.40 cal, 40” octagon barrel with an about very good bore which shows bright areas and strong rifling but with some frosting in the grooves. The barrel and lockplate are a pewter gray and plum brown patina, the barrel showing remnants of light oxidation and with the expected minor handling marks that come from the years. The top flat of the barrel is marked “John Derr”, the lockplate is unadorned and spartan showing remnants some light engraving as was found on commercially available lockplates of the era. The full-length stock appears to be constructed of cherry and rates about very good with the overall dings and handling marks that come from the years with a few scattered light cracks, there is a moderate crack or chip in the area ahead of, and just below the lockplate, which was repaired and has been camouflaged with an opaque red stain and heavy varnish. There is a simple flared head patchbox with concealed bottom release beneath toeplate and simple brass buttplate. Single trigger equipped, the hammer spring is robust and the lock functions properly. The left of butt shows a handsome carved-in-relief depiction of American Indian, pointing with his pipe tomahawk, the tomahawk head itself an inlaid piece of brass. The fellow is flanked by lovely open flowing carved scroll which continues on the underside of the square-bottom cheekpiece. The cheekpiece itself shows an exceptional depiction of American Eagle with shield within an oval, this surrounded by the same excellent fine silver wire inlays with foliate and floral decoration. The oval German silver monogram plate atop the wrist is engraved with Mr. Neff’s initials “GN” with a bit of light foliate decoration. The stock itself rates of course excellent, and shows exquisite fiddleback figure its entire length, bordering on exhibition grade wood. A search for Mr. Neff within the parameters of Mr. Buchele’s lifetime reveals two candidates, both from Pennsylvania: one fellow, an American veteran, was an avid sportsman, hunter and shooter, the other a successful architect from Philadelphia, either could have ordered such a rifle, further research may prove a connection. Really an exceptional rifle and a fabulous example of Mr. Buchele’s talent, it would be very difficult to find a better example. (38937-349) {ANTIQUE} [Cletus Klein Collection]
.44 cal., 42 1/2” octagon Douglas barrel with a bright excellent bore. The iron surfaces retain all of their lovely maker-applied plum brown with the slightest bit of the...more muzzle and sharp edge toning. There is a wide German silver blade front sight with lightly engraved base and flat-top iron rear, the top flat engraved in inlaid silver plate “Made For/George W. Neff/By/W Buchele”. An extremely fancy and extensively inlaid rifle, the bulk of the hardware is brass including the faceted thimbles and tailpipe and faceted dovetailed triggerguard, the trigger itself faced in German silver with a fancy rearward flourish. The rifle has faceted wide heel buttplate and lightly engraved toeplate in-which the patchbox release is located. The barrel is keyed by four wedges in ornate German silver escutcheons, each with open flowing flourishes lightly engraved, these surrounded by fine silver wire foliate and floral brass inlays the entire length of the forend. The forestock features a pierced brass plate with geometric and foliate decoration and there is a simple geometric side plate. The patchbox is pierced with a floral head and open light scroll with push-button bottom release. The stock has island carved flourishes at the rear of the tang and flanking the point of comb left and right and the stock flats are raised with carved dropper points at the rear of each. The left of butt shows a handsome carved-in-relief depiction of American Indian, pointing with his pipe tomahawk, the tomahawk head itself an inlaid piece of brass. Fabulous Contemporary Flintlock Fullstock Sporting Rifle by William Buchele

Lot # 36 (Sale Order: 36 of 952)

.45 cal, 41” octagon Douglas barrel with a bright excellent bore. The barrel retains all its lovely original maker plum brown with some very light toning at the muzzle and on the sharp edges. There is a simple German silver blade front sight with flat-top rear, the barrel’s top flat marked “W Buchele”. Most furniture is brass including the faceted thimbles and tailpipe, with faceted guard with a lightly dovetailed front extension. Buttplate is early broad heel with simple single flourish toeplate with a bit of the silver wire inlay ahead of it. Barrel is keyed with four wedges through flowing foliate German silver escutcheons left and right showing extensive open fine silver wire inlays flanking each with silver foliate and brass floral inlay decoration. The arm features a lovely ornate patchbox with pierced head and floral and foliate engraving with an overlay on the lid of the Liberty Bell and “1776” engraved at its rear. There is an oval German silver monogram plate atop the wrist, it is un-engraved, and there are small foliate German silver “leaf” decorations at the rear of each stock flat. Most impressive is a somewhat folky silver inlay along the left side of butt at toeline with three fishes, their mouths open and aghast as a young lady or perhaps man is hiding beneath the waves, using a hollow reed to breathe through. The water’s surface and lily pads are above him (or her), also in silver, while two running Mohawk warriors, obviously in pursuit of the lad or lady, run by, unaware of the presence beneath the pond’s surface, their quarry breathing through this hollow reed. The flat bottom cheekpiece has a very nice Federal Eagle inlay with the same wire and foliate decoration as is seen on the forestock with “We Owe Allegiance To No Crown” in riband. The stock itself rates excellent and shows nice fiddle back figure for most of its length. There is light scroll and floral island carving to the rear of the tang with nice carved flourishes on both sides of the point of comb. The arm is equipped with a fancy single trigger and the lock functions well mechanically. (38937-170) {ANTIQUE} [Cletus Klein Collection]

Winchester Model 1873 Lever Action Rifle

Lot # 41 (Sale Order: 41 of 952)

serial #343473, 32 WCF, 24" round barrel with full magazine and a good bore showing scattered light pitting and strong rifling throughout. The barrel and magazine tube have mostly toned to a pleasant mix of medium gray and pale brown patina, scattered fine pinprick pitting and light scratches. The sights show strong remnants of bright blue and there are streaks of original blue lurking about the protected areas of the barrel and magazine tube. The action retains perhaps 55-60% strong original bright blue with the balance toned to gray-brown patina showing scattered light scratches and freckling. There is some circumferential wear around the sideplate screw hole but this is rather unobtrusive and all markings remain very nice and clear including the "32 CAL" on the cartridge lifter. The hammer retains some strong case-hardened colors in the protected areas while the loading gate shows some hints of fire blue. The plain walnut stocks remain in very good plus condition showing some moderate surface scratches scattered along the buttstock, scattered light dings and very good metal-to-wood fit. The rifle is sighted with a standard sporting rear sight and period Lyman globe sight with two position flip-up target aperture or fine bead setting. The sight is clearly marked "LYMAN'S PAT.FEB.13.94" and the action seems to function well mechanically. Included is a Winchester factory letter stating the rifle shipped as a 32 caliber rifle with round barrel and plain trigger on October 13, 1890 as part of order number 19448. A very fine 1873 with some nice original finish along the action. (139334-1) {ANTIQUE}

Lot # 42 (Sale Order: 42 of 952)

serial #528669B, 22 RF Short, 24" round barrel with full magazine and a fair bore showing moderate old pitting and faint rifling throughout. The lever and hammer show some remnants of good case-hardened colors in the protected areas and all markings remain crisp and clear. The plain walnut forend and scarce shotgun-style buttstock remain in very good plus condition showing scattered light dings, a very slight concave depression at the rear of the forend, some light abrasions and strong original varnish along the buttstock. There are a few minor spots of white paint transfer along the buttstock and the black checkered hard rubber buttplate remains in fair-good condition showing a small chip at the right edge and scattered thin cracks. The proper carbine sights are intact, the left arm of the rear sight spring has broken and the ladder is slightly bent, the saddle ring is intact and the action seems to function well mechanically. Johnson Automatics Model 1941 Semi-Auto Rifle from the Melvin Johnson Estate

Lot # 50 (Sale Order: 50 of 952)

serial #9710, 30-06, 22" 1941-dated barrel with a bright excellent bore. The metal surfaces of this rifle retain about 98% of a period applied gray enamel finish showing some scattered light handling marks and some evident spots of pinprick pitting underneath the enamel along the magazine body. The rear right side of the receiver is marked with the Cranston Arms Co. triangle and small Dutch acceptance star. The smooth pistolgrip walnut buttstock and forend remain in excellent, almost as-new condition perhaps showing just an insignificant handling mark or two. The rifle is sighted with the Dutch meter rear sight, the sling swivels are intact and the action seems to function well mechanically. Interestingly the bolt body and barrel are both stamp-numbered matching the gun, normally these parts were not matched at the factory but they do not show signs of having been re-stamped. Included with this rifle is what appears to be an original Johnson rifle blueprint and a note from Mr. R. Stephen Dorsey, staff editor of the Gun Report magazine dated April 21, 1988 that describes this rifle by serial number as having been purchased from the estate of Melvin Johnson by a Mr. Hal C. Ross in 1978. The rifle was then purchased by Mr. Dorsey in 1987 and finally by the consignor in 1988. The note stated that Mr. Ross purchased a number of 1941 rifles and other experimental arms from the Johnson estate and also says the include blueprint is also likely from the estate. Also included is certified copy of an original note from Mr. Ross stating he bought this rifle serial #9710 (along with #'s 4577 and B4665) from the Johnson estate. The blueprint measures 36"x24" and remains in very good plus condition showing some small creases, scuffs and a couple tiny tears along the edges but otherwise shows crisp images and text detailing the actions on the 1941 semi-auto rifle and the Johnson light machine gun. A wonderful example with some fascinating provenance that would make an excellent addition to any advanced martial or American arms collection. (139353-3) {C&R}
