Fine Custom Winchester Model 42 Pigeon Grade Skeet Shotgun

Lot # 1025 (Sale Order: 26 of 753)

serial #1433, .410 bore, 28'' plain barrel choked skeet with a bright excellent bore. The metal surfaces on this very attractive custom-engraved shotgun retain about 98 to near 99% post-engraving blue, there being the remnants of some very light pinprick pitting on the magazine support extension and a few spots on the receiver, they are very unobtrusive and one must really look for them. The carrier and bolt show only very light operational wear with most of their vibrant engine turning still brilliant. The arm is engraved loosely in a factory No. 5 pattern with gun dogs left and right, along with quail, all inlaid in gold, this against a meadow backdrop and flanked by excellent quality open flowing scroll with background punch-dot shading. The magazine tube support is properly engraved with a standing pigeon. The checkered straight grip walnut buttstock and semi-beavertail extended forend rate very good with the expected light dings and handling marks that come from the years but with crisp checkering showing only light wear. The arm mounts solidly and seems to function well mechanically and is a very faithful custom facsimile of a high grade Model 42 Pigeon Grade Skeet. (3B8963-72) {C&R} [Tim Falvey Collection]

Gebruder Merkel Prewar Scalloped Boxlock Double Ejectorgun

Lot # 1027 (Sale Order: 28 of 753)

serial #14548, 16 ga., 29'' Special Gewehr Lauf steel barrels choked a tight modified and a light full with bright excellent bores. The barrels retain about 98% older restored blue of excellent quality, with the minor handling mark or two here and there and an extremely shallow ding in the left tube. They feature light sprays of engraved scroll at the breeches and retailers marking of Anton Weingarten Düsseldorf on rib. The scalloped frame shows over all excellent quality scroll geometric and banknote filigree engraving with makers name on the belly of the frame. It retains about 98% older restored color case-hardening with nice sideclip lightly scalloped fences and features dual under-bites with crossbolt. The checkered walnut round knob pistolgrip buttstock and splinter style forend rate very good plus to excellent as very nicely refinished, reacquiring some minor dings and handling marks from light field use. There are small diamond-shaped ebony inlays at the rear of the cheeks and a rounded shadowline cheekpiece, as well as an un-engraved German silver oval monogram plate along the toeline. The gun has a 14'' length of pull to the grooved horn buttplate with Merkel logo at the toe and drops of 1 5/8'' and 2 13/16''. Features double triggers, cocking indicators, ejectors and non-automatic safety. Most wall thicknesses are in excess of .027'' with a couple spots measuring .022''. The gun seems to function well mechanically with robust ejectors, occasionally the left ejector fails to trip when the arm is opened exceptionally slowly, and likely needs a professional cleaning only. A very handsome pre-war Merkel ejectorgun proofed in 1925. (3B8963-65) {C&R} [Tim Falvey Collection]

AYA Coral Deluxe Over Under Shotgun

Lot # 1028 (Sale Order: 29 of 753)

serial #523279, 12 ga., 27'' barrels choked modified and improved cylinder with bright excellent bores. The blued metal surfaces of this handsome ejectorgun retain approximately 98% original finish and are a pleasing deep charcoal coloration overall, with undertones of plum. A couple very minor pinpricks of oxidation can be seen upon careful inspection, and there is some light silvering around the muzzles and along the high edges of the ventilated rib. The underside of the barrels and the inside of the frame bears Spanish nitro proofmarks along with a matching serial number; the inside of the frame retains a vivid case-colored finish. The coin-finished exterior features double Kersten locks and shows bright, highly detailed engraving that accents its entirety. Meticulous hatch shading sets the background for a pointer amidst a field of birds that spans both sides and transitions to flowing, spiral scroll surrounding the maker's mark on the bottom of the frame. Similar engraving continues down the tang and onto the automatic safety selector, which features a gold inlaid ''S''. The bottom metal shows a blued finish that is lightly silvered along the edges, which in no way detracts from the delicate engraving that continues to the rearmost tip of the tang. The European walnut straightgrip stock rates about excellent, with wraparound checkering and a sinewy lateral grain. There are a few minor blemishes from use afield, and a couple subtle impact markings. It should be noted that there is a very tight hairline split approximately 1'' long on the left flat just forward of the wrist. The two-piece forend exhibits bright point pattern checkering and shows matching serial numbers on both the inside of the wood and on the underside of the engraved Deeley release. Imported from Spain by American Arms, Inc., this arm has likely seen only limited use and is a fine example of Mediterranean craftsmanship. (6A9108-10) {MODERN}

Smith & Wesson 44 Magnum Hand Ejector Revolver

Lot # 1029 (Sale Order: 30 of 753)

serial #S169984, 44 Magnum, 6 1/2'' barrel with an excellent bore. This lovely 1956-1957 made five-screw revolver remains in wonderful condition. The metal surfaces retain about 99% original blue finish with limited edge wear, turn ring on the recessed cylinder, a couple of light scratches and a few minor dings. The .500'' target hammer and .500'' target trigger retain bold case-hardened colors with minor operational wear. The grips are diamond checkered walnut factory ''coke bottle'' with silver S&W medallions that rate very good to excellent showing a few light scratches and dents with a very small chipped area at rear border of right grip (about 3/4''). A casual glance does not notice this chip but it is visible with a little closer scrutiny. The revolver is equipped with a red ramp front sight, white outline micro adjustable rear sight, ten-groove backstrap and later added overtravel screw on the trigger. None of the usual parts are numbered on this hand ejector and it shows no rework marks, but as was common during transitions, this frame probably was assembled after the transition to the Model 29 was adopted and numbering of parts ceased. This gun remains a beautiful example of an early five-screw in an uncommon variant. (8A8945-7) {C&R}

Remington Model 1 Sporting Rifle

Lot # 1033 (Sale Order: 34 of 753)

Description Update 11/14/2019: Model No. 1 1/2 (Not No. 1)

serial #2537, .32 2 1/8'' (.32-40 Remington-Hepburn), 28'' part octagon part round barrel with a mostly bright very fine bore. The barrel is a dull pewter gunmetal gray patina with scattered oxidation staining and some areas of light pitting, with an area about 3'' from the muzzle on the barrel's left side with some more moderate pitting, another patch more moderate to near heavy about 2'' to its rear. There is a standard sporting front sight in place and the Remington semi buckhorn sporting rear. The frame is a smoky silvery and pewter case-hardened patina with scattered oxidation staining and a couple very light pits; the principal parts a dark gray-blue. The stock and forend rate about very good showing the overall expected minor dings and handling marks, the stock with some fiddle back figure peering through; the forend shows perhaps a bit more wear. The buttplate actually retains some smoky gray-blue case colors, with a bit of light pitting at the heel. The gun seems to function well mechanically. A respectable example that would be enjoyable to take to the range once some brass is manufactured. (3A9459-27) {ANTIQUE}

Smith & Wesson Model 1 1/2 Revolver In Antique Writing Desk Casing

Lot # 1034 (Sale Order: 35 of 753)

serial #23760, 32 RF, 3 5/8'' octagon barrel with a good bore which shows oxidation and light pitting. The metal surfaces on this First Model revolver are an even mix of fading original blue, smooth flaked brown finish and a pewter gunmetal patina showing strong remnants of case colors in the protected areas of the hammer. The writing desk is likely mahogany and rates overall very good showing an old refinish many years ago. It consists of a writing surface, recessed inkwell and a small tray for writing implements. The writing surface folds open to reveal four recessed pockets for documents, writing pen or pencil holders sewn into its face, and a burgundy baize French fitted recess for the revolver. Removal of the writing implement tray reveals a cartridge block beneath for 12 rounds of 32 RF ammunition. The ink bottle is in place, there is a small quill included and a steel writing pen from France; the key for the case is also included. The smooth rosewood grips rate very fine showing a bit of older added finish, they are stamp-numbered to the gun. The gun seems to function well mechanically although lockup is a bit loose but barrel-to-frame fit is excellent and the assembly numbers match on barrel frame and cylinder. The lid of the case is slightly warped but it can be manipulated to close properly. A very attractive writing desk casing. (39471-60) {ANTIQUE}

Smith & Wesson No. 1 Second Issue Revolver with Wonderful Carved Ivory Lion's Head Grip

Lot # 1035 (Sale Order: 36 of 753)

22 RF, 3 3/16" ribbed octagon barrel with a very good bore showing scattered light oxidation and strong rifling throughout. The barrel and cylinder of this revolver have mostly flaked to a pleasant deep gray-brown patina showing a few light dings, minor operational wear and scattered flakes of original bright blue here and there. The ejector spud retains perhaps 60% original bright blue and the hammer is a silvery gray patina. The frame retains about 94% original silver finish showing some areas along the high edge worn to ocher brass, a few scattered light dings and handling marks, the silver taking on a nice tarnish overall. The barrel address and patent markings along the cylinder remain clear. The grip frame has been heavily modified to accommodate the grip, the tangs having mostly been removed and the grip secured by two screws through the edge of the frame beneath the sideplate. The antique ivory grip is really quite something; the carving is masterfully executed and the lion's head finely detailed with snarling visage and flowing mane. A couple of the lion's teeth have been lost but this is relatively minor and the ivory shows a wonderful rich patina with extensive but attractive age crackling. The action seems to function well mechanically and barrel-to-frame fit is excellent. Included with the revolver is a very nice but later vintage case French-fitted to accommodate the grip. The exterior of the case is covered in a dark maroon faux leather showing some light staining and scuffs at the edges while the interior is lined in maroon baize also showing some light staining and minor scuffs as well as a cutout for a box of cartridges. This charming little revolver would make for an excellent addition to any American arms or Smith & Wesson collection. (13C9474-20) {ANTIQUE} [Dr. John W. Hall Collection]

This charming little revolver would make for an excellent addition to any American arms or Smith & Wesson collection. (13C9474-20) {ANTIQUE} [Dr. John W. Hall Collection]

Russian No. 3 Single Action Revolver by Tula

Lot # 1036 (Sale Order: 37 of 753)

serial #15142, 44 S&W Russian, 6 1/2" ribbed round barrel with a partially bright very good bore showing some scattered small spots of light oxidation and strong rifling throughout. The barrel and cylinder of this 1889-dated revolver have mostly toned to dark gray patina showing scattered old oxidation staining, scratches and remnants of old light pitting. There are still some flakes of original bright blue lurking about the protected areas. The frame retains perhaps 60% original bright blue toning to gray brown patina with scattered light pitting and old oxidation staining. The screw heads show some light slot wear and the holes light circumferential wear, the sides of the trigger have taken on a straw color and the hammer retains a hint of case-hardened colors. All markings remain clear with Russian Tula arsenal address along the rib, circled Russian "P" at the back of the rib and cylinder and Tula hammer stamp at the rear left frame. Strangely the revolver is not stamped with the military acceptance committee double-headed eagle along the rib or frame although there is a small "(Crown) / M" on the right side of the barrel that does not appear to be of Russian origin. The smooth walnut grips are un-numbered and remain in very good condition showing mostly worn finish, light scratches and handling marks. The barrel and cylinder are matching the frame, barrel-to-frame fit is solid and the action seems to function well mechanically with very good timing and lock-up. A very good example for the Smith & Wesson or Russian arms collector, these Tula-made examples are quite hard to locate in this country. (13B9474-132) {ANTIQUE} [Dr. John W. Hall Collection]

Custom Engraved Colt Single Action Army Revolver

Lot # 1047 (Sale Order: 48 of 753)

serial #253343, 41 Colt, 4 3/4" barrel with an oxidized and pitted bore. This 1904 made gun was non-factory refurbished and engraved by an unknown artisan. The surfaces have intertwined moderately tight scroll engraving with punch-dot shading for full coverage. The cylinder has straight edge borders with foliate motifs in the flutes, there are wedges of scroll on the butt and triggerguard strap. The metal surfaces retain about 95% reapplied nickel plate showing high edge wear at the muzzle and toe, oxidation stains, old pitting under the new finish, freckling in the flutes and other handling marks. The gun was gold washed but it has mostly worn away and now only about 8-10% remains, the top and bottom of the ejector housing has full rich gold wash but most of the remaining wash is in the protected areas of the cylinder and guarded portions of the hammer. The gold wash has stubbornly resisted wear in the recesses of the punch-dot shading on the cylinder and outer edge of the ejector rod housing but was not so resilient on the remaining surfaces. The grips are lovely unmarked period mother-of-pearl that rate very good to excellent with a 1/2" long moderately deep chip missing at the top where they meet the backstrap. The action works mechanically, the barrel address and Rampant Colt on the frame are soft but the other markings remain strong. A fine example of a custom engraved Peacemaker. Custom Engraved Colt Single Action Army Revolver

Lot # 1048 (Sale Order: 49 of 753)

serial #324758, 45 Colt, 4 3/4" barrel with a fair bore showing scattered light to moderate oxidized pitting. This 1912-made Colt has been beautifully engraved and given a deep blue-black non-factory finish. The gun has flowing foliate scroll on a punch-dot shaded background covering perhaps 90% of the surfaces. There are wedges of scroll on the backstrap, butt and triggerguard strap in addition to a bold rosette on the left recoil shield and a flower on the frame's ejector housing seat. The metal surfaces retain about 99% reapplied blue showing old pitting under the new finish, minor high edge wear and other handling marks. The hammer and trigger are blued with minor operational wear. The grips jump right out at you featuring lovely mother-of-pearl construction in first-rate condition. They are unmarked with a smooth right panel but the left has a beautifully carved steers head with piercing red ruby eyes. The barrel address is soft but the other markings are strong and the gun functions mechanically but the safety notch shows signs of wear and needs attention. This highly attractive gun is a great find for the collector or enthusiast that prefers the simple elegance of a blue finished engraved gun. (8B9275-24) {MODERN}

Colt-Sauer Model 3000 Scalloped Boxlock Drilling

Lot # 1049 (Sale Order: 50 of 753)

Description Update 11/14/2019: Stock cast-off about 3/4"

serial #GG6019, 12 ga X 12 ga X 30-06 SPRG, 25'' barrels choked modified and full with excellent bores. The barrels and lever retain 98-99% original blue with a deep plum undertone and scattered blemishes. The left barrel is marked ''COLT-SAUER'' flanked by a Rampant Colt and Sauer & Sohn logo, the right is marked ''MOD.3000 / KRUPP-SPEZIAL LAUFSTAHL'', both barrels are engraved with simple patterns around the breeches. The scalloped frame is about excellent with extensive engraving, the right-side shows a bull elk, the left a fleeing whitetail buck and the belly some scroll with the maker's name, there are just a couple small blemishes. The checkered capped pistolgrip walnut buttstock and beavertail forend are near excellent, the buttstock's fiddleback figure is very nice and appears to change color when manipulated in the light. The forend shows matching ''GG6019'' serial number, there is a very small filled area near the tip of the forend and other scattered handling marks. Barrels lock up tight and the drilling appears mechanically sound. The gun features cocking indicators, double triggers, dual under-bites, Greener style crossbolt with left-side Greener safety and European swivel studs. The front sight is a small blade with brass insert, the rear sight automatically flips-up when rifle barrel is actuated. A very attractive 1975-made German hunting gun imported and distributed by Colt. (22B9504-5) {MODERN}
