The “SPORTING” marked triggerguard retains about 95% original blue with scattered sparse freckling and a very small Social Security number scratched adjacent to the Sporting marking. The checkered walnut capped pistolgrip stock with left side cheekpiece and contrasting black forend tip rates very good with scattered light handling marks, some flaking and a few areas of fabric impressions where some gun case was wet or had solvent, but the checkering remains crisp with a few dings or chips, the checkered steel buttplate toning to gray. The rifle is sighted with a hooded bead front and a Lyman 48 rear mounted to the receiver. The left side of the receiver is professionally drilled and tapped for a quality vintage scope mount, currently supporting a nice Weaver J4 telescopic sight. The scope has crosshair reticle and bright excellent optics and rates very fine itself showing only some very light handling marks or fading of the finish. A pair of Super Grade swivels and a factory 5-round Winchester-marked magazine are included, the follower stamped “22 Long R”. The action appears to function well mechanically. The beauty of this set up is that the 3/4” tube of the scope allows the Lyman receiver sight to still be used without having to remove the sight bridge, so open sights and scope can be used concurrently. A very respectable example of these desirable rifles with some nice period optics. (3B11033-2) {C&R} (2500/4000)

Smith & Wesson 44 Double Action Revolver

Lot # 15 (Sale Order: 15 of 663)

serial #45882, 44 S&W Russian, 5” ribbed round barrel with a bright excellent bore. This is a fine later-production revolver with the 1 9/16” cylinder that was shipped to a Birmingham retailer. The metal surfaces retain about 95% original bright blue showing some mild edge wear and scattered light handling marks, most of the loss along the cylinder which shows some light operational wear and some mild flaking to pleasant gray-brown patina. The hammer and trigger show lovely vibrant case-hardened colors throughout, muting slightly along the trigger, and all markings remain crisp and clear, also showing Birmingham proof marks. The black checkered hard rubber grips remain in excellent condition showing a couple minor handling marks and slight discoloration of the right panel. The right panel is properly stamp-numbered to the gun, the left retains a strong patent date along the bottom edge and their fit is perfect. The remaining serialized parts are matching, barrel-to-frame fit is solid and the action seems to function well mechanically in both single and double action with very good timing and lock-up. The included factory letter indicates the revolver shipped on March 1, 1905 to Charles Osborne & Co. of Birmingham. The letter indicates a 6 inch barrel but this is an error as it is obviously an original matching 5 inch barrel on the gun. An attractive 44 DA retailed in England. Lot # 17 (Sale Order: 17 of 663)

serial #0, 38 S&W, 6” ribbed round barrel with a bright bore showing a bulge 1” ahead of the breech and otherwise crisp rifling. This is a very interesting gun with single “0” serial number associated with the desirable club guns gifted by S&W to various shooting clubs or awarded to prominent shooters. It is equipped with longer 6” barrel with target sights, spur trigger assembly that was available with the combination sets and factory mother-of-pearl grips. The revolver retains the wide hammer spur and half cock notch of the Third Model 38 SA. The metal surfaces retain about 94-95% original bright blue showing some thinning along the gripstraps, mild high edge wear and light handling marks. There are a few small spots of old oxidation on the right side frame and left sideplate that are mostly unobtrusive. The hammer retains vibrant case-hardened colors, the trigger shows nice straw color and the barrel markings with “MODEL OF 91” remain crisp. The smooth mother-of-pearl grips with gold S&W medallions remain in very fine condition showing a few tiny dings along the edges and some thin cracks forming along the bases that are very minor. Equipped with factory target sights, barrel-to-frame fit is solid and the action with rebounding hammer seems to function well mechanically with very good timing and lock-up. A fine and very rare gun for the advanced collector. (13C11004-30) {ANTIQUE} (3500/5000)

Rare Australian Smith & Wesson New Model No. 3 Revolver With Stock

Lot # 18 (Sale Order: 18 of 663)

serial #13086, 44 S&W Russian, 7” ribbed round barrel with a mostly bright very good bore showing some scattered small areas of light oxidation and a few shallow tool marks nearer the muzzle with otherwise strong rifling. The metal surfaces retain about 85% original nickel finish showing some scattered thin scratches and some light flaking toning to gray-brown patina along the high edges. Most of the loss is due to areas along the forward half of the barrel having been lightly cleaned to silvery pewter gunmetal though it blends in rather nicely with the surrounding nickel so it almost goes unnoticed. The hammer and triggerguard retain some good case-hardened colors in the protected areas muting to a pleasant smoky gray while the sides of the trigger show hints of straw color and the latch shows good oil-quenched gray case-hardening. The barrel address with reissue patent date remains crisp and the butt shows proper broad arrow stamped above the serial number. The black checkered hard rubber grips remain in very fine condition showing some scattered light handling marks and some fading. The right panel is scratch-numbered “34143” and both panels otherwise fit very nicely. The remaining serialized parts are matching, barrel-to-frame fit is very good and the action with rebounding hammer seems to function well mechanically. The included original shoulder stock is numbered only two numbers away from the revolver itself (13088) and remains in very fine condition, the hardware retaining about 97% nice quality restored nickel finish showing some remnants of pinprick pitting beneath the finish, the serial number and broad arrow stamp otherwise intact. The walnut stock proper shows a light cleaning with a small crack on the right side where it meets the hardware and some other light handling marks, the original hard rubber buttplate is very fine and the stock fits the revolver very nicely. Only about 310 New Model No. 3 revolvers were procured by Australia and this is a very fine example. (13B11004-40) {ANTIQUE} (4000/5000)

Fine Winchester Model 1885 High Wall Schuetzen Rifle

Lot # 21 (Sale Order: 21 of 663)

serial #99666, 32-40, 30” No. 3 weight octagon barrel with a bright excellent bore. The barrel of this attractive 1905-made rifle retains about 95% original blue showing a few scattered pinprick pits along some of the edges and some even fading under bright light. The action retains about 96% original bright blue showing some mild edge wear and a bit of flaking to pleasant gray-brown patina along the top. The lower tang is flaking to plum-brown patina and the spur lever is gray-brown with some generous smoky gray case-hardening. The sides of the triggers show good fire blue and the breechblock retains strong case-hardened colors. All markings remain intact and strong and the checkered capped pistolgrip walnut buttstock and schnabel forend with ebony tip insert remain in very fine condition retaining about 95% original varnish showing some scattered light dings and mild scuffs, a few more noticeable along the right side of the forend. Stock features hard rubber pistolgrip cap, left-side schuetzen cheekpiece and helm buttplate. Stock fit remains very nice with cheekpiece well-defined and the 1X wood shows some beginnings of attractive grain figure along the sides of the butt and tip of forend. The inside lower tang shows assembly number “20760 X IIS” while the inside upper tang inlet on the stock and inside toe of the buttplate show matching “20760”. There are a pair of lead cylinders installed into the butt as well to add weight. Rifle includes a period “tuning fork” palm rest with turned walnut knobs that show some light dings and the hardware mostly toned to pewter gunmetal. The rifle is equipped with mid-range Vernier tang sight, rear sight dovetail blanked and target globe front with bead on post insert. The action with double set triggers seems to function well mechanically and the included factory letter indicates the rifle shipped on May 5, 1905 and returned for some repair work in September of 1906. Rifle features are mostly as-described, they only list the palm rest base hardware as being shipped with the rifle and no sights. Interestingly the ledger noted that the customer, Mr. Gingsheim, would be sending a mainspring and a forend for the gun. A fine 1885 Schuetzen rifle. (13C10998-59) {C&R} [Gary W. Custom Krag Model 1898 Sporting Rifle

Lot # 22 (Sale Order: 22 of 663)

serial #433644, 30-40 Krag, 26” matted top Winchester barrel with a bright excellent bore. This is a very nicely executed Krag sporting rifle, with what was likely a Winchester Model 1895 matted top round barrel neatly mated to the action. The barrel retains about 97% fading original blue while the receiver shows some nice oil-quenched case-hardening. The triggerguard retains excellent post-engraving blue, the bow with quality open scroll and geometric bordering, with a bit of engraving at the screws. The bolt body is a silvery-gray patina with the extractor showing some nice fire temper blue, the safety with nice case colors. The checkered capped pistolgrip English walnut buttstock rates very fine with some minor dings and handling marks. It has flawlessly executed checkered panels at grip and forearm, with a rounded, dual beaded left side cheekpiece, hard rubber gripcap and nice schnabel tip. The grooved steel Mannlicher-style trapdoor buttplate gives a 13 3/4” length of pull to the nicely checkered trigger; the buttplate does show a bit of oxidation. The rifle has a very high Lyman front blade and there are vacant holes on the left of receiver for a no-longer-present receiver sight. The left of receiver just ahead of the magazine cover has some small dings, a few of which have been dressed leaving gray gun metal and the stock was inletted for the receiver sight. The rear sling base does not sit quite flush and its screws are mismatched. The nose of the stock once had a barrel band, which has gone missing leaving a small step, which could be smoothed out and the finish matched. Interestingly the Feb 1, 1920 issue of Arms and the Man mentions this rifle’s receiver, by serial number, as “The old Krag Rifle no 433644” belonging to a very prominent rifleman who used it to win “The Army Matches 15 years ago….”, but never mentions WHO that rifleman is. A very handsome, very Wundhammer and King-looking sporter, were the comb flutes more pronounced. Mike Petrov would’ve know the maker. (3B10988-17) {C&R} [Russell S. Gilmore Collection] (1800/2200)

Lot # 23 (Sale Order: 23 of 663)

serial #353837, 38 Colt Special, 5 1/2" barrel with an excellent bore. Only 82 standard frame Colt Single Action Army Revolvers were chambered in 38 Colt Special as it, and its identical twin the 38 S&W Special, did not gain a huge following until after WW II (The 36 Calibers of the Colt © Brown). The barrel and ejector rod housing retain about 95% original blue, the left side muzzle showing wear and the outer edge of the housing with some high edge wear, all markings remaining sharp and the top surface of the front sight slightly regulated. The cylinder has toned primarily to a deep gray-blue patina with overall circumferential markings which are light. The frame retains a nice 90% original color case-hardening, quite strong on the right side, toned more on the left with flaking near the patent dates and rampant Colt; the hammer shows vibrant case color on its left side, a bit of wear on the right. The backstrap and grip have toned to a dull pewtery gunmetal patina. The checkered hard rubber factory grips are numbered 350404 and rate very good plus to fine showing only light wear and strong rampant Colts. The ball end of the chamber has a square seat which was used in the Colt Special chamber as opposed to the Smith & Wesson Special chamber. A rare gun retaining strong original condition. Smith & Wesson 44 Magnum Pre-Model 29 Revolver

Lot # 24 (Sale Order: 24 of 663)

serial #S185156, 44 Magnum, 8 3/8” barrel with a bright excellent bore. The metal surfaces on this handsome four-screw revolver retain about 98% plus original blue, showing a light turn ring on the cylinder, a bit of high edge wear with light muzzle rub, and the oddly scattered light handling scratch here or there. The target trigger and target hammer rate excellent retaining robust color case-hardening, each with a bit of operational wear. The checkered coke bottle exotic hardwood target grips appear to be rosewood but may be cocobolo, and rate excellent and feature silver Smith & Wesson medallions and are correctly un-numbered. The gun seems to operate properly mechanically and features red ramp front sight with white outline rear. A lovely example of the pre-29 revolver that, while clearly used, was well cared for. Australian Webley Mark I Self-Loading Pistol

Lot # 25 (Sale Order: 25 of 663)

serial #2850, 455 Webley Auto, 5” barrel with a partially bright about very good plus bore showing some pinprick pitting and oxidation scattered about the grooves and otherwise strong rifling. The metal surfaces of this 1913-dated Australian contract pistol retain about 75-80% original blue that shows honest high edge wear and areas thinning to gray-brown patina under bright light throughout, along with some light handling marks and areas of mild oxidation. The small parts retain most of their original black enamel finish. All correct markings remain intact and strong showing “D” within a broad arrow Australian property stamp atop the slide. The grooved walnut grips remain in very fine condition showing some areas darkened somewhat from the years, scattered light dings and both exhibit a little bit of play. All of the serialized parts are matching, there are no import marks or export proofs and one original magazine is included. The action seems to function well mechanically and the pistol also includes an older somewhat ad-hoc custom made shoulder holster that shows honest wear. Only about 520 Mark I pistols were procured by Australia. A nice example of a scarce and desirable variant for the martial collector. (13B11080-1) {C&R} (2000/3000)
