Property of Capt. Francis Hall. Exceptional James Purdey 12 gauge double barreled pinfire shotgun with rare grip safety, in its original wooden case with tools and loading equipment. Ebony handled tools includes makers G&J Hawksley, W. Bartram. Purdey marked rib. The barrels are a fine Damascus pattern, and the action and mounts have fine scroll engraving. The serial number is 5943, dating from 1860. Double triggers. The stock is exceptional, with a beautiful grain, with fine checkering at the wrist and on the forend. The barrels have turned a brown patina, and the back action locks are bright steel. The case is lined with red felt. The oil bottle is Purdey marked. There is a finely finished cleaning rod in the case. The barrels have Birmingham proofs and are also serial numbered 5943. LOP is 14 1/4". Un-choked bores. The top of the case has inlaid brass circles engraved “Fras. Hall, Park Hall, Mansfield, Notts". Fancy Purdey label is mostly intact. 30" barrels, hammer actions work well, tight lock-up. Bores are good, need cleaned. Stocks are very good. Missing the left hammer screw. Captain Francis Hall who was born in 1805 in Glasgow where his father was at that time in command of the Northern District. Coming from a family of soldiers it seemed obvious that Francis would join the Army and he served with the 7th Hussars, for seven years mainly in Ireland. After an accident when he fell from his horse which laid him up for several months, he felt compelled to leave the Service and at that time his rank was that of Captain. He married Mary Ann Bilbie on 1st March 1832. Census records shows that they were living at Park Hall, Mansfield, Nottingham. Great History. From the Lawrence P. Shelton Collection. NRA Condition-Very Good. Antique Firearm.
