"Hurstville Lime Kiln Bridge" Acrylic Paintion on Canvas painted by Randy Burkey - Maquoketa, Iowa 2015. Artist signed. Framed. Artist Statement: "Hurstville Limekiln Bridge" This was the scene I encountered in January of 2015. The bridge is over the north fork of the Maquoketa River. It is located east of Hurstville Lime Kilns. This bridge can be seen from highway 61 just north of Hurstville.
The water was warmer than the air temperature, fog rose up from the river, I thought it was beautiful and it inspired me to make this painting. I believe there was two more paintings of the bridge spanning the river. Alfred Hurst had built the bridge probably in the early 1900s. The limestone was quarried and put in a limestone like car and gravity sent the cars to the lime kilns. The cars were dumped and pulled back up the hill with horses or mules for reloading.
