Overview of JOOST SWARTE - DE VRIES BOOKSHOP 90TH ANNIVERSARY ILLUSTRATION
Item Details
Shipping Costs: UK-£21, US:£45, Europe:£40. Far East:£60. Joost Swarte is a Dutch cartoonist and graphic designer. He is best known for his 'ligne claire' or clear line style of drawing, and in fact coined the term. He has invented dozens of comics and characters as well as designing stamps, posters, cards, LP and CD covers. Apart from comics and graphic design, Swarte has also designed furniture, leaded and stained glass windows, murals and other objects. For his hometown Haarlem he even designed a theatre. Recently he created a pair of spectacles that allow the wearer to see the world in a more ironic way (and they really work). Joost has also created covers for RAW Magazine, and is widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in European comic art. We are delighted that he has donated four original works to our auction. This one is the original drawing for a silk-screen print that was made to celebrate the renovation of Haarlem's idiosyncratic and world-famous De Vries bookshop in 1995. Indian Ink on paper, 16.1 x 28.6 cm.
