A striking German Renaissance hand-colored woodcut, likely dating from the early 1500s, depicting a densely packed medieval battle scene. The print features armored pikemen, heraldic flags, shields, cannons, and fallen soldiers, with dynamic visual detail and powerful composition. Beneath the image is a verse written in blackletter Gothic script (Fraktur). The opening line reads: “Benedig graifer darnach an…” This loosely translates to: “Benedict the count afterward struck down many thousands…” The text suggests a historical or moralistic account, possibly part of a broadsheet or early printed battle chronicle. These types of prints were common in South Germany (Augsburg or Nuremberg) and were often issued to commemorate battles or to accompany printed political or religious commentary. Attribution and Style: Likely produced in the circle of or influenced by Hans Burgkmair or Hans Holbein the Elder, known for their richly detailed military and heraldic woodcuts. The combination of battle narrative, and hand coloring points to early 16th-century German craftsmanship. 9.5" x 6.5"
