1969 DODGE HEMI CHARGER 500

Lot # 1441 (Sale Order: 211 of 248)

The 426 HEMI engine introduced by Chrysler in 1964 gave racers an instant supremacy over the competition but as GM and Ford gained ground with their own exotic power plants Chrysler engineers turned to aerodynamics to regain the edge on the track. In 1968 Dodge introduced a redesigned Charger with a stylish new form incorporating Coke-bottle contours a new recessed grille using the originals hidden headlights a flying buttress roof with recessed rear window and minimal bright trim. The new Charger enjoyed a six-fold increase in sales but it was still aerodynamically limited even with HEMI power at hand so for 1969 a homologation special was developed using a flush-mounted Coronet front grille and flush rear window. Named the Charger 500 it was the last significant step in the search for improved aerodynamics before the introduction of the famous Dodge Charger Daytona. Although the 500 moniker symbolized the NASCAR requirement for homologation Dodge built only 392 Charger 500 coupes one of which is this outstanding example that has been a fixture in the Wellborn Musclecar Museum since 2004. Well known as the most highly optioned Charger 500 known to exist it was sold new with an MSRP of $5821.91 at Argyle Chrysler Dodge in Cooksville Ontario in Canada. It was the subject of a feature article in a 2005 issue of Muscle Car Review where its fulsome list of options was chronicled in detail including the luggage rack that was ordered for the car but never installed. The customer ordered it the article stated but the rack would not fit because the rear decklid trimmed to accommodate the new window was too short. Powered by a 426/425hp HEMI V8 and TorqueFlite 3-speed automatic transmission its mechanicals include power steering and brakes. Interior appointments include power windows rare cloth bucket seats with headrests center console with slap-stick floor shifter AM radio with 8-track tape player 6-way adjustable drivers seat rear window defogger A01 lighting group and tinted glass. The Bright White paint reminiscent of the body in white finish used in the period by racers with factory connections is accented with a black bumble bee stripe bumper guards and painted steel wheels with red line tires. This unique machine is a Mopar Aero Warrior.

1918 LA BESTIONI BOATTAIL SPEEDSTER

Lot # 1454 (Sale Order: 222 of 248)

Le Bestioni is the product of the fertile imagination of retro auto designer and classic restorer Gary Wales of Woodland Hills CA. With many successful creations to his credit and several world-record prices this is by far his best effort and most exciting offering. Le Bestioni is a stunning creation harkening back to the heroic days when the giant two-man racing cars ruled the road-racing circuits around the world. With few surviving examples of these great juggernauts in existence it became a passion of Wales to reintroduce and once again to make available to the auto aficionado the opportunity to see these monsters in action. This larger-than-life racing car is an exciting experience to see on the road but to drive it is an experience for all time. Le Bestioni incorporates original design elements along with modern safety features that blend and enhance the overall performance allowing the driver and co-pilot to safely navigate with modern driving conditions. The aluminum body for Le Bestioni was designed and constructed by Wales using the traditional Edwards-type forming wheel. Body panels were shaped and fitted by hand. With the inner structure of welded steel for strength and reliability the entire body has been formed and welded together with hundreds of hand-bucked 3/16 rivets. All mechanical work was performed by master mechanic Andres Aranada with assistance by Wales. The massive power plant is of American LeFrance design along with the modified twin chain-drive chassis. The 14-liter 6-cylinder (each piston is the size of a two-pound coffee can) engine and 3-speed manual transmission run with the reliability of a Santa Fe locomotive running on both coil and magneto ignition; the reliability is outstanding. Steering is assisted with the inclusion of Lee Racing off-road power steering and dual power brakes fitted to the front wheels from Hamilton Engineering. The rear brakes are the original massive drum mechanical type with emergency brake incorporated and both working together as one smooth operation. The horn is an original Klaxon horn from pre-1920 as are the solid-brass matched headlights. Spot taillamps are the solid brass diver helmets and an original pre-1920 Italian license plate carrier also incorporates the stop light. The very special mahogany-covered boattail was created and finished with over 20 coats of Epifanes high-gloss varnish by a master classics boat builder while the premier biscuit leather interior was fitted by Hilborn of Rolls-Royce fame. The massive brass radiator shell was carefully constructed by metal artist Bill West. The project was completed in mid-July 2007 with a coming-out party on July 19 2007. This is truly a wolf in wolfs clothing. It is the ultimate statement. **TITLE IN TRANSIT**

1963 PONTIAC BONNEVILLE JFK AMBULANCE

Lot # 1456 (Sale Order: 224 of 248)

The Superior Coach Corporation converted 15 1963 Bonneville chassis into ambulances for the Defense Department and this cars Navy Data Plate shows that it was assigned to Bethesda Naval Hospital. Following President John F. Kennedys assassination on November 22 1963 ambulance 94-49196 met Air Force One at Andrews Air Force Base. It was used to transport President Kennedys flag-draped casket as well as members of the Kennedy family from Andrews to Bethesda and later to the U.S. Capitol. Following the Naval service the ambulance was mothballed and eventually sold as surplus. Its history after that is somewhat murky. A letter from the Surgeon Generals office obtained via the FOIA links the Navy Registration number to this cars VIN number but others believe the original car was destroyed at the request of the Kennedy family. More recently it was used in the 2015 biopic Jackie starring Natalie Portman as Jacqueline Kennedy. Automatic transmission.
