Incredibly rare antique inkwell.
Signed "A. Puchegger" - German born artist (1878-1917).
Known for his beautiful renditions of animals that he became inspired with from his trips to the Berlin Zoo.
Made of cast bronze around the turn of the century and still has its original patina.
Features a romantic pair of lovebirds with intricate details
Anton Puchegger was born in 1878 in Lower Austria Payerbach at Semmering. His training as an artist was through the financial support of the Count of Wurmbrand-Stuppach. From 1892 to 1896 Puchegger visited the wood carver school in Bolzano , then the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. By 1900, he held a fellowship of the Vienna Academy of Art in Paris, where he completed his training as an animal sculptor. He returned to Berlin and since 1905, Anton Puchegger lived as a freelance artist in Berlin. The models for his sculptures of animals he found in the Berlin Zoo. 1909 began a fruitful collaboration with the Royal Porcelain Manufactory Berlin (KPM) for which Puchegger designed a cycle of animal figures. Since 1910, he exhibited his works regularly on the Great Berlin Art Exhibition, and was increasingly recognized. Anton Puchegger died in 1917 from the effects of pulmonary tuberculosis .
