The Corner Restaurant Sign

Lot # 126

Origin / Description: The Corner Restaurant Sign

Originally located at 9th and Broadway in Lorain, Ohio and operated from 1985 - 2000

Approximate Measurements: 96" L X 48" H

See pictures and link for more information.
The Corner Restaurant & Lounge, located at the corner of West 9th Street and Broadway (900 Broadway) started out, first of all, as the Miraldi Brothers Cafe & Sample Room at 836 Broadway in 1910. Five years later, in 1915, they were forced to move by the WTCU (The Women's Temperance Christian Union) to 802 Broadway forattempting in hiding the fact that they were serving liquor (thus the name "Sample"). In 1919 the Volsted Act, which prompted the 18th Amendment, otherwise known as "Prohibition", forced the Miraldi Brothers to rename their cafe as Miraldi Brothers "Soft Drinks". In 1924, John Miraldi moved his cafe to 900 Broadway.

John, however, left the business for a while and went into real estate. His brother James, meanwhile, took over the business, along with starting a business of his own in 1928 at 2105 Elyria Avenue and was called James Miraldi Soft Drinks. In 1934, John returned to running the cafe, calling it Miraldi's Cafe. Helping him with the business was his wife Josephine and his sister-in-law Carmela, the widow of Flora Miraldi. From this point, until 1957, the Miraldi family ran this well known restaurant. In 1957, Richard Pazder, from Vermilion, Ohio, bought the cafe from the Miraldi family, directing its operations until 1962. At this point, in 1962, Ray Leidheiser, a veteran Vermilion restuaranteur, purchased trhe cafe from Richard Pazder, serving the Lorain public for six years, until ill health forced him to sell. In 1968, George and Alafair Mayflower Shuster owned and operated Miraldi's Cafe, until 1985.

In July, 1983, Rich Foil and Bob Catalano bought the building from the Miraldi family and remodeled it, turning it, two years later, in 1985, into a restaurant and lounge, calling it "The Corner". At first, Rich and Bob started out just serving lunch, featuring a simple Italian meal and menu. Gradually, they extended the hours, remaining open several nights a week for dinner. They had four full-time employees and fourteen part-time employees. What made the restuarant unique, however, was that it enhanced a historical flavor and atmosphere. Old newspaper clippings were framed, hanging on the walls. There were black & white photos of local sports teams and players and freighters on the river that were donated. There were also old auto dealer and gas station signs, along with other Broadway businesses, hanging on the walls. In a way, the restaurant had a "taste of Cheers" - from the famed television comedy show. There were even classic car shows during the month of August - part of West 9th Street would be blocked off.

However, on New Year's Eve, December 31, 2000, the Corner closed its doors after seventeen years. In early Spring, 2001, the building re-opened as Scorchers.

American Gas Journal 1919

Book: Images of America Lorain, Ohio

?The Hoffman Heater Co. offices and factory were at the Nickel Plate Railroad and Washington Ave. The first hot-water heater was made on January 19, 1905. When the hot-water faucet was turned on, a large gas flame in the center of a copper coil would heat the water for as long as the faucet was on. Mr. Thomas McGeachie had the franchise to sell the HOffman Heaters at 324 Fourth Street. The water heaters were priced from $15 up to $100.?

Miscellaneous Stove Parts Including Hardware and Front Plate from The Dangler Stove Company.
See pictures for more information.

D. Edward Dangler is a Cleveland manufacturer whose associations and work are of exceptional interest and form an important part of the industrial record of the city.

He was born in Cleveland February 23, 1858, a son of David A. and J. (Clark) Dangler. David A. Dangler died in 1912 and Mrs. Dangler died in 1905. Mr. Dangler attended the schools of Philadelphia and Cleveland and entered the manufacturing field at the age of twenty-two.

It was in 1880 that he formed the first company for the manufacture of gasoline stoves. He is one of the pioneer gasoline and oil stove manufacturers in the United States, and that industry, with various modifications, improvements and extensions, have been his chief pursuit ever since. He enlarged his local plant, incorporated as The Dangler Stove Company, and gradually increased the output to a line of oil and gas stoves that have been sold in nearly every country of the world. The Dangler Stove Company of Cleveland is now a division of the American Stove Company, and Mr. Dangler is its manager and a director of the corporation. The plant and offices are on Perkins Avenue between East Fortieth and East Fifty-fifth streets.
