Washington County, GA 5 gallon signed LJ jar

Lot # 16 (Sale Order: 30 of 118)

Washington County Georgia five gallon signed "LJ" jar. Cir:1840-1850 loop handled jar signed 'LJ" for Lucius Jordan. The jar is an outstanding and beautiful iron rust colored alkaline glaze. This piece is fresh to the market from a south Alabama collection. It was found on a plantation in Geneva County, city is Black, Alabama an unincorporated town. This jar has history that is tied to slavery which we have several pictures of the African American family who originally owned it. This piece migrated from Washington co, GA to Geneva County, AL. Cir. 1850's. After the emancipation the family was given parcels of land from the plantation an the jar remained on property until the family moved to Georgia in the 1960's. The family did not want anything to do with said items from the plantation that tied them to slavery. Years ago the collector who found this jar was riding by the property and saw the family putting items on the curb for trash collection. He grabbed the piece of pottery and other items also the pictures of the family were in the jar and will be included in the sale of the jar. This is a true important piece of pottery and has a great history. Condition: no repairs, it has minor chips from normal wear and also has a firing crack from a rock that would have caused a major blowout and would have been catastrophic to the jar. The jar is sold and retains "hot" water. This adds wonderful characteristics to the piece. 15" tall.
