Garlington Lucas signed Alabama Jug, Half Gallon

Lot # 7 (Sale Order: 11 of 105)

Important half gallon jug signed "GL" for Garlington Lucas of Henry County Alabama. He was born from the rich southern pottery tradition in Edgefield South Carolina in 18...more21 and by 1842 opened his pottery shop in the Screamer community of Henry County Alabama. Their has been some controversy over the year's about his marks being missattributed for the potter Elijah Long of ( Crawford County Georgia ) which show the same form as Elijah jugs. This jug "GL" is without no doubt Garlington Lucius and truly solves the debate over the signature EL / GL. This is hands down one of the most important and extremely scariest vessel Cagle auction has ever auctioned. The vessel is half gallon and bears a very strong irony glaze that just catches your eye throughout the entire jug. It also bears a strong and definite GL signature that has a coggle wheel impress of what looks to be a one for possibly gallon size. Note this is a half gallon - not a one gallon jug. Condition is Stellar, with zero cracks, chip, or restorations. This is truly a once in a life time jug that would sit in any southern collection or fit right into any museum portfolio. 8 1/2 Tall
