MAY 10, 1775 CONTINENTAL CURRENCY $7 NOTE - SIGNED by MORDECAI LEWIS & LUKE MORRIS

Lot # 1 (Sale Order: 1 of 352)

From 1775 to 1779, Congress issued $226 million in Continental Currency. As time went on, these notes were heavily counterfeited and their redemption value for hard mone...morey declined dramatically. For example, in January of 1777, $1.25 of Continental Currency would purchase $1 worth of gold or silver. By January of 1781, it took $100 worth of Continental Currency to purchase $1 of gold or silver. This resulted in the popular phrase "Not worth a Continental." This note was issued on May 10, 1775 and was put into circulation in August of that year. The paper was made at Ivy Mills in Chester County, PA. It contains blue fibers and mica flakes. It also has a print of a leaf. All of these were attempts to thwart counterfeiting. This is a very nice example that we grade at least Very Fine.

Lot # 2 (Sale Order: 2 of 352)

Abraham Bell was an influential New York merchant and clipper ship builder who specialize...mored in the export of Southern cotton to Ireland and Great Britain. During the Irish potato famine in the 1840's, Bell transported thousands of immigrants from Ireland to the U.S. In 1844, the company name changed to Abraham Bell and Son. Bell was friends with Horace Greeley ("Go west young man"), editor of the New York Herald. One reminder of Bell today is Bell Boulevard, a highway in Flushing, NY.
