Large Indian Tomahawk Peace Pipe

Lot # 29 (Sale Order: 29 of 601)

Large Indian Tomahawk Peace Pipe, decorated with very small brass tacks and square pins. Dark patina to the diamond-shaped wood body. Large axe/pipe head measures 8-7/8''...more long with the blade measuring 4'' wide. Pierced heart-shape design in the center of the axe blade. Bach/San Francisco'' behind ''H.P. Dorsey to J.A. Watson'' and with a 1.375'' sunburst engraved ahead, a large ''S'' at left; lightly floral-engraved flat lockplate is marked ''I-P-Moore/Warranted'' (typically an English import) below flat hammer and scrolled percussion bolster; German-silver furniture includes fancy finger-spur trigger guard, 4.675'' patchbox opening to a butt trap for patches and spare parts, engraved crescent buttplate with long leaf-shaped lower tang finial, small sideplate, two oval barrel wedge escutcheons, nosecap; varnished walnut halfstock is checkered at wrist, has carved cheekrest and two raised aprons on either side of lock, lead (or Britannia metal) rear and two iron ferrules retaining the brass-tipped hickory ramrod. Condition is fine retaining approx. 75% original brown striping to barrel, the balance of the metal being smooth gunmetal gray with sharp edges, engraving and markings; German silver is fine showing a smooth age patina; halfstock is sound with use marks mainly confined to bottom forend (doubtless from being rested while firing due to the weight of the barrel), sharp checkering, lovely grain and color, and most original varnish (has a .25'' x 5'' section behind nosecap on right, that may be patched or a tight hairline crack, but more likely is wood grain). Action is very strong and smooth; bore shines with light frosting, a small spot of erosion toward muzzle, and sharp rifling. This rifle is a wonderful, colorful and historic piece of California Gold Rush and Western Plains history, most worthy of further research. Est.: $3,000-$5,000. (Antique)(Doug Beneck collection)

Antique Jennings Sporting Rifle

Lot # 32 (Sale Order: 33 of 601)

Very Rare Antique Jennings Single Shot Breechloading Sporting Rifle, #506, .54 cal., 26'' heavy round barrel with blade front and notch rear sights, is marked ''Robbins a...morend Lawrence-Makers-Windsor, VT. Patent 1849'' on top, has three steel ferrules retaining the brass-tipped hickory ramrod below; unique flat-side frame has rectangular right-side port ahead of hammer for loading the self-contained Hunt's patent ''Rocket Ball'' cartridge, circular door at top for the pill primers, which are automatically fed to the chamber when the ring-trigger is operated within its elongated loop trigger guard; long frame tangs retain the varnished walnut buttstock with its oval German-silver nameplate at left and iron crescent buttplate. Top of barrel at breech and hammer with floral engraving. Mfg'd ca. 1850-51, being factory altered from Jennings repeating rifle parts. As with many (if not most) Jennings, this rifle was converted to a percussion muzzleloader during its period of use, as the Rocket Ball cartridge, while truly ahead of its time, lacked sufficient power to make it a practical firearm (and thus its limited mfg. and extreme rarity today). Condition is good+, the metal retaining no original finishes but an overall dark brown age patina with pitting, nicks and vise marks along barrel; barrel markings are mostly obscured, engraving is fair; ''perch belly'' stock is sound having a 1.5'' wood loss at left top tang, a 7/8'' secure crack at right frame juncture, much original varnish, and excellent fit. Action works (with help); bore is clean showing overall black-powder erosion. Jennings rifles, like their predecessor the Hunt, were forerunners to the S&W lever-action repeating pistols, the Volcanic arms, the New Haven and Henry arms, and ultimately the famed Winchester rifles. Est.: $2,500-$4,000. (Antique)

M.1860 Cavalry Officer's Sword, by Ames

Lot # 36 (Sale Order: 37 of 601)

U.S. Model 1860 Cavalry Officer's Sword, by Ames, with Engraved Naming on Pommel and Research Documents. Front side of pommel reads ''EDWARD J. NOYES, 1st Texas Cavalry, ...more1863''. Engraving looks period and nicely done. Edward J. Noyes enlisted in the 3rd Massachusetts Cavalry, Company ''L'' in November, 1862. He was transferred with a promotion to Captain to the 1St Texas Cavalry Co. A, later that month. He served with the 1st Texas Cavalry until 1864, and was severely wounded in the upper chest (by a ball entering between the clavicle and first rib) while leading a charge on a body of rebel cavalry at Ticfaw Station on the Jackson R.R. in Louisiana, May 16th, 1863. Noyes was discharged, presumably for medical reasons in July, 1864. He survived the war and was a member of the G.A.R. He died in 1925, age 83. Mouth of the scabbard is a separate brass piece retained by a central screw. The drag is brass with a border line around the edge and retained by a central screw on the back. Condition is good, the blade showing age graying, light pitting, and fading to the etched engraving. There are no edge nicks. Guard and pommel show a light age patina and were probably cleaned at sometime in the past. The eagle at the quillion shows wear to the details of the bird. Shagreen grip covering has some losses on the top edge and sides. Wire wrapping is all intact and tight. Scabbard shows an old cleaned appearance with age graying, rust spotting, light pitting, and wear to the drag and hanger bands. Top hanger band is missing its retaining screw. A nice sword with great history. Est.: $2,000-$4,000.
