Antique Japanese Tanegashima Matchlock Rifle

Lot # 1 (Sale Order: 1 of 599)

Antique Japanese Tanegashima Matchlock Rifle, with Signed Barrel, NSNV, approx. .48 cal. smoothbore, 42'' octagon barrel with silver inlaid family Mon or crest. Barrel is signed by the maker on the bottom flat, with a long multi-character signature. Triangular front sight, with grooved rear sight. 53.5'' overall length from barrel tip to end of stock. Nice wood stock with numerous applied silver and brass decorations. No ramrod present. Two brass barrel retaining bands. Hinged brass cover for touch hole. Brass lock and match holder hammer, and external brass mainspring. Stock has large brass engraved figure of a foo-dog at the rear on the right side, with silver cherry blossom inlays for the barrel pin holes, and lock retaining pins. There are two round silver inlays with engraved kanji on them, maybe a family name or the gun's name. Stamped kanji on left side of stock near breech, may be a Meiji era inventory/registration marking. Condition is near excellent for its age, the barrel with a nice even brown patina, the silver family mon is clear at the top rear. Action functions, but the spring is a bit weak; bore has light rust. Wood stock is sound with a nice original finish, normal scuffs, dings, and scratches from light use. All the metal inlays are present and in good condition. Overall a very nice example. Est.: $1,200-$1,800. (Antique)

Antique Japanese Signed Wakizashi in Samurai Mts.

Lot # 2 (Sale Order: 2 of 599)

Antique Japanese Signed Wakizashi in Samurai Mounts, 18.25'' shinogi-zukuri blade with partial bohi groove on one side only. Original length tang with one hole, signed ''Eshu kuni ju Kaneshige''. This Shinto period swordsmith, Kaneshige, worked in Echizen province circa 1650-1660. Blade has a nice gold washed copper habaki at the base. Tsuka handle is covered in large nodule rayskin, with old medium blue silk cord wrapping. Iron fuchi/kashira fittings with decorations of dragon flies. Menuki are mixed metal figures of a man with large hat, carrying a fishing pole or naginta pole arm. Iron tsuba sword guard with holes for kozuka and kogai, decorated with plant branches and round fruit clusters done in silver and copper. Gold-washed brass seppa spacers on either side of tsuba. Black lacquer scabbard has iron handachi style mount at lower tip that is decorated with dragonflies similar to the fuchi on the handle. There is a pocket for a kozuka with a nice unsigned brass kozuka handle decorated with plover birds in shakudo and copper. The kogatana knife blade has a very long signature. Condition is good for its age, the blade showing age graying, light rust pitting over all, and a couple of folding flaws in non critical areas. Condition of the polish makes it hard to see the metal grain or temperline, but blade is still very sharp. Rust on the tang is typical for Shinto period swords. Handle fits nice and tight; the silk cord wrapping is sound and in very good original condition. Mounts probably date to the early 1800's. Scabbard shows large cracks in the wood, losses to most of the original black lacquer finish, a poorly done re-paint, has black thread wrapped to reinforce weak points, and the kurikata is broken off. The kozuka handle shows age and minor dings, the kogatana is sound, but hard to see any temper line due to the blade condition. Est.: $500-$750.

Mounted Japanese Signed Katana w/Dragon Horimono

Lot # 3 (Sale Order: 3 of 599)

Mounted Japanese Signed Katana with Dragon Horimono, 24-7/8'' shinogi-zukuri blade with mostly suguha straight temperline. There are two spots where the temperline has triple pointed peaks along its length. One side has a nicely carved horimono of a dragon chasing a flaming ball, with a bonji character carved on the other side. Blade dates from the 1930's or 1940's, and is an oil-tempered Showato. Tang is signed ''Ido Hidetoshi'' with a Showa Arsenal stamp. Hidetoshi worked in Mino Province during the war. The habaki is plain solid brass, the seppas are aluminum. Tsuka handle is covered in small nodule rayskin and wrapped with brown silk cord. The menuki are quiver with arrows, the fuchi/kashira are plain smooth copper alloy. All the handle fittings date from the same time period as the blade or a little later. Tsuba guard is a mokko shaped iron with holes for kozuka and kogai, and is contemporary with the sword. Scabbard is wood painted with black lacquer. This sword and mountings are typical of Showa era swords mounted for export before and after WWII. Condition is very good, the blade showing a clear temper that would clean to excellent, with just some old dried oil present. Tang is original length and has the typical light reddish rust of Showa period swords. Tsuba shows some light rust overall, with a blued finish. The rayskin on the handle is cracked on one side and the handle fittings are oxidized, but wrapping is nice and tight. Scabbard shows a few chips, scratches, and scuffs to the lacquer finish, and the upper metal reinforcement band is loose. Overall a nice example with a great carved decorated blade. Est.: $500-$800.

Restored Pr. Brit. Pat. 1759 Eliott's Lt. Dragoons

Lot # 12 (Sale Order: 12 of 599)

Restored Matched Pair of British Pattern 1759 Eliott's Light Dragoon Flintlock Pistols, NVSNs, .66 ''carbine bore'' cal., 8.75'' round barrels without sights have cannon-turned rings at breech; one pistol has a ''(crown)/GR/(Broad Arrow)'' plus 2 deeply-struck proof marks at breech, other pistol just the latter marks; iron lockplates with elongated rear teats are marked ''(large crown)/GR'' ahead of cock and ''Tower'' vertically behind; brass furniture includes serpentine sideplates, trigger guards, domed buttcaps and single finials retaining brass-tipped hickory ramrods. Walnut fullstocks have raised aprons about the upper barrel tangs, raised aprons with rear teats at either side of locks; one pistol's stock is marked ''F-D'' and 2 ''Xs'' behind sideplate and ''(Broad Arrow)'' over ''B'' and ''O'' above buttcap, the other is marked ''D'' and 2 ''Xs'' behind sideplate and ''B O/(Broad Arrow)'' at right grip. Stocks and furniture of both pistols appear to be completely original; it is probable the pair was re-converted to flintlock from percussion, as barrel touchhole areas show no erosion from black powder as would be expected, have a smooth added browned finish. Likewise, both locks are likely of more recent fabrication as their markings do not conform to original 18th century lock markings, nor do they show flint wear or powder erosion. Ramrods may be of the period, but are not exact matches. Condition is good to very good as described, brass has a cleaned light patina. Stocks are solid and smooth having clear markings and minor dings from age and military service, nice grain and color, and a later varnish finish. Actions function well; smoothbores show overall light erosion, likely having been cleaned at the time of restoration. Est.: $1,800-$2,400/Pair. (Antique)
