Antique Japanese Wakizashi, in Samurai Aikuchi Mounts

Lot # 603 (Sale Order: 3 of 508)

Antique Japanese Wakizashi, in Samurai Aikuchi Mounts, 14-5/8'' Katakiriba shaped blade, flat on one side, with shinogi ridgeline on the other side. Blade is straight, quite thick and meaty, with a very sharp edge. Copper habaki at base of blade. Mounts are made of wood and wrapped in thin rattan strips. The fuchi and kashira handle fittings are a matched pair, made of shakudo, with decorations of phoenix birds and kiri flowers. Thin decorated metal fitting at mouth of scabbard. Copper ring for attaching belt cord. No fitting on bottom of scabbard. Condition is fair, the blade showing a dark, thin rust patina overall, and numerous folding flaws or grain openings, mainly on the shinogi ridge side. There is no heavy pitting or edge nicks. Condition of the blade polish does not allow for determination of the type of grain in the hand-forged metal of the blade, or the type of hamon temperline. The pin holding the handle on is made of metal and does not seem to come apart, so we are unable to determine the tang condition or if it might have a signature. Handle fittings show wear and age, the patina thinning to a copper color. Handle is sound with all the rattan wrapping intact. The upper fitting is retained by two domed copper pins. Scabbard has some losses to the rattan wrapping in a couple of places with a small hole in the wood near the upper mouth. There is soiling, age, and light wear to the surface of the mounts. Overall an all original interesting sword. Est. $300-$500.

Antique Japanese Wakizashi in Samurai Mounts

Lot # 604 (Sale Order: 4 of 508)

Antique Japanese Wakizashi in Samurai Mounts, 17.75'' shinogi-zukuri blade with suguha straight temper line, unsigned original length tang with one hole. Tang has Takanoha (hawk feather) yasurime file marks, typical of the Yamato school of sword making. Sword dates from the Shinto period, 1620 to 1700. Nice high quality two-piece habaki with gold foil over copper. One original gold foil covered seppa spacer with newer paper and leather spacers. Iron tsuba guard with holes for kozuka and kogai, with incised and hot stamped decorations. Tsuka handle is wrapped in high quality rayskin, but missing the silk cord wrapping, menuki decorations and the kashira upper fitting. The fuchi lower fitting is a beautiful piece made of shakudo and gold with carved decorations of a dragon in waves. Scabbard is wood covered in black lacquer with thin gold-painted leaves and vines intertwined around two Tokugawa Aoi family mons. There is a pocket for a kozuka in the scabbard, but no kozuka is present. Condition is very good for its age, blade showing a fair state of old polish, some minor edge nicks, spider and surface rust, one minor folding flaw above the temper line, and a couple of nicks on the back spine. Tang rust is dark, typical of early Shinto swords. As noted above, the handle is missing its silk cord wrapping, menuki, and upper fitting, with some minor losses to the rayskin. Tsuba shows dark patina overall. Scabbard is missing the kurikata (loop for cord), and has a few cracks, scratches, and scuffs in the lacquer finish. Est.: $350-$500.

Antique Japanese Samurai Sword

Lot # 605 (Sale Order: 5 of 508)

Antique Japanese Samurai Sword, in relic condition, with massive 32.75'' long shinogi-zukuri blade, heavily rusted, with 8 7/8'' long tang having two mounting holes. Blade shows a hint of a narrow straight temperline in one or two spots, but is mostly too dark to see anymore detail. The original length tang is heavily rusted and pitted, with no evidence of a signature. There are two mounting holes, one near the top of the tang, the other nearer to the bottom. There is an old one-piece solid copper smooth habaki with the sword. It could be an old sword, late Koto or Shinto, or a newer Shin-Shinto sword with the tang aged to look older. The condition makes it hard to determine for sure. Blade is 1-5/16'' wide near the base. Condition is poor, but possibly salvageable. There are numerous edge nicks, a couple are quite large and deep. There is one small folding flaw or rust pit near the bottom, just above the habaki area. There is heavy rust and some pitting overall. Scabbard is rather crude, made of wood and covered in old paper, then lacquered over. The kurikata is missing. There is a large copper sleeve around the top edge. Scabbard has numerous insect holes in the wood and the paper covering, and has been wrapped with modern black thread to keep it together near the bottom. Sword may have been made as an offering to a shrine. Est.: $200-$400.
