Antique Japanese Mounted Wakizashi Short Sword

Lot # 1 (Sale Order: 1 of 847)

Antique Japanese Mounted Wakizashi Short Sword, 19.75" long, shinogi-zukuri shaped stout blade, with a narrow suguha hamon straight temper line. Two-piece copper habaki at base of blade. Signed tang with two mekugi ana holes reads: "Rai Kuni Haru", who was an Owari smith, working in late Shinto times, around 1711-1716. Iron sukashi pierced tsuba guard, Soten school design of samurais on horseback, with gold inlaid decorations, and signature of the maker. Silver-colored seppa spacers. Mounted in a textured black lacquer saya scabbard decorated with gold maki-e lacquer designs of leaves, branches, and dragon fly. Tsuka handle has unsigned shakudo nanako and gold inlaid fuchi/kashira with samurais in armor, tree branches, and flowers. Menuki are shakudo and gold designs fruit, vines, and leaves. Black silk cord wrapping is coming apart. Condition is very good, the blade showing scattered light rust stains, a couple of small edge nicks, and scratches from sharpening and use. The old polish makes the grain in the hada hard to see, but there are no fatal flaws in the blade. Temper is a thin straight type that curls around in the boshi point. Tang has two holes, and the machi has been moved up when it was remounted at some point. Tsuba shows age with a nice dark uncleaned patina. Handle shows several breaks in the silk cord wrapping, some losses and old glue repairs to the cord. Saya scabbard is missing the horn fitting around the opening mouth at the top and one shitodome ferrule at the kurikata, has some minor dings and scratches, and minor losses to the lacquer on the bottom horn fitting. There is a pocket on the back side of the saya for a kozuka, but none is present. Overall a nice example needing a little restoration. Est.:  $800-$1,500.

Antique Japanese Aikuchi Mounted Tanto, with Signed Koto Blade

Lot # 2 (Sale Order: 2 of 847)

Antique Japanese Aikuchi Mounted Tanto, with Signed Koto Blade. 10.5" naginata-shaped blade with narrow suguha straight temper, ubu nakago tang with one mekugi ana hole, signed "Nobu Kuni", silver foil covered habaki, with one copper seppa spacer. On the saya are carved basket eave designs, fans, and rabbits in flowers. The kurikata is carved with wave designs. There is a signature with kao on the bottom side of the kojiri. A black cord sageo is wrapped around the top of the saya. Includes an NBTHK Certificate paper, dated 1974, to Nobu Kuni, and an old silk bag. Condition is good, the blade in old polish that shows faint hada grain to the steel, a narrow nioi based hamon temper line that is obscured by rust in the upper portion of the blade. There is scattered spider rust on the blade, the majority being in the front half near the tip. (It is hard to make out the temper in the boshi tip because of the rust in that area.) There are no fatal flaws visible in the blade. The very tip of the point is broken, but easily fixed if re-polished professionally. Tang shows a nice dark patina that comes with age and two-character signature. The habaki shows wear to the silver foil covering, age darkening and light wear. The tsuka handle has a small area of inlay on the kashira, the moon carving, that is missing; otherwise the tsuka is very nice. The saya shows repairs around the opening at the top, re-gluing of the body, and a slightly open seam on the side. The silk bag shows age and fraying. Est.: $1,500-$3,000.

Revolutionary War-Era French Maubeuge Arsenal "Charleville" Model 1763 Flintlock Musket

Lot # 11 (Sale Order: 11 of 847)

Revolutionary War-Era French Maubeuge Arsenal "Charleville" Model 1763 Flintlock Musket, with possible American Militia use, NVSN, .69 cal., 44.75" round-to-octagonal barrel with tiny blade front sight has cannon-turning at round-octagonal juncture; beveled lockplate with elongated rear teat is script-engraved "M de/Maubeuge" below "(fleur-de-lis)/H" ahead of the large military-style reinforced flint cock; iron furniture includes loop trigger guard with long finial-topped front and rear tangs, heavy buttplate, curved "bow-tie" sideplate, 3 ferrules retaining the button-top steel ramrod (sling loop at middle), brass nosecap; oil-finished walnut fullstock has raised panels either side of lock, thin wrist profile with "bullnose" comb, is stamped "Joseph Todd York" and "Presented to (illegible)," indicating likely use by an American unit during the Revolutionary War. Mfg'd ca. 1760s with metal left "in the bright." This musket has a Model 1777 Maubeuge Arsenal rounded-pan lock mated to stock and furniture from another gun, as it lacks the usual 3 barrel bands and plain military furniture of the type, instead having the pinned barrel and ramrod pipes of a different maker. Barrel touchhole may have been rebushed long ago with expected heavy erosion, but gun shows no other sign of alteration (perhaps being a Revolutionary War battlefield assembly). Condition is very good showing great age, but complete, the iron surfaces showing scattered deep erosion with dark brown patina, the edges and visible markings good. Lock appears to be in original flintlock configuration, with unbushed touchhole and correct parts. Fullstock is sound and smooth with the expected marks of age and military use; ramrod fits loose in its channel. Action is strong and sure, smoothbore shows medium black-powder erosion and should clean nicely.  Est.: $1,800-$2,600. (Antique)
