Antique Scottish Regulation Pattern All-Metal Highland Regimental Flintlock Belt Pistol, by John Waters of Birmingham, NVSN, .58 ("pistol bore") cal., 7.5" round barrel without sights has cannon-turned rings at breech and two London Gunmakers Company private marks, "(crown)/P" and "(crown)/V" flanking Waters' "(crown)/IW" mark; flat steel lockplate has integral pan, frizzen spring with leaf- like finial and "swan's-neck" cock; bronze (period referred to as "gunmetal") frame with fishtail butt (threaded vent pick was eliminated and hole filled), has ball-type trigger without guard, left-side 6.25" steel belt hook (incl. mount), 1.75" pipe retaining the lobed steel button-tip ramrod. Mfg'd. ca. 1770-80. Condition is very good, the steel surfaces showing cleaned discoloration and light erosion with sharp edges and markings, the bronze having an untouched age patina with minor knackering at butt. Flintlock appears to be in original configuration with unbushed touchhole. Action is smooth and crisp, clean smoothbore shows light roughness. Est.: $1,500-$2,000. (Antique)

Revolutionary War-Era French Model 1777 Flintlock Cavalry Pistol, with rare Original Belt Hook, made at the National Arsenal St. Etienne, NVSN, .69 cal., 7.5" tapered round barrel without sights has 3 mostly-illegible proofmarks and "80" (for 1780, the year of production) at breech; bronze frame with integral pan is script- engraved "St. Etienne" in a curve under the reinforced cock and marked "(crown)/L" ahead, has long frizzen spring with leaf-like finial, left-side 5.625" steel belt hook, right-side button-tip ramrod, trigger guard hinged at rear, oval brass buttcap with upper tang connecting to the steel backstrap that extends to the barrel tang. Stock of varnished walnut bears an illegible stamp plus the date mark "178_" at right. Mfg'd 1780. Condition is very good, the steel surfaces showing cleaned discoloration and scattered erosion with mostly fine edges and markings, the bronze with moderate age patina. Stock is sound showing scattered dings and fine markings. Flintlock appears to be in original configuration with correct parts and unrestored touchhole. Ramrod is a modern replacement. Action is smooth and crisp, clean smoothbore shows mild roughness. France's Mle 1777 is known as the father of the M1799 North & Cheney, America's first martial pistol. Est.: $1,000-$1,500. (Antique)

Exquisite 18th C. Silver-Mounted German Flintlock Holster Pistol, by Johann Christoph Kuchenreiter

Exquisite 18th Century Silver-Mounted German Flintlock Holster Pistol, by Johann Christoph Kuchenreiter, NVSN, .50 cal., 10" round barrel with tiny knife-blade front sight, small 2-leaf rear sight and 4" ribs at each side, marked "I. Christoph Kuchenreiter" ("I" being the archaic form of the letter "J") along the full-length top rib; has inlaid silver scrolling, a sunken leaping mounted horseman poincon in gold at the breech (crest of this gunmaking dynasty), and is marked "2" (denoting 1 of a pair) at the top tang; the small and delicate lock is marked "Chri/Kuchenreiter" under the integral pan, has a fine swan-neck cock, chiseled frizzen spring and is bright (appears silver-plated); silver furniture includes the trigger guard with long rear tang and scalloped front finial, oval 3-stage buttcap with tall side tangs, vacant scalloped nameplate at wrist, 4" scalloped sideplate, two fancy ferrules retaining the brass-tipped hardwood ramrod. Fullstock of varnished richly-grained walnut features floral, vine and border incise carving and a horn nosecap. Made late 1700s. Condition is excellent retaining perhaps traces of darkened blue but primarily barrel shows a lightly oxidized finely-etched background pattern; the silver inlays and gold cartouche are 100% intact, edges and lock markings are sharp, silver mountings are perfect showing only light tarnish. Stock displays the lovely and delicate carving of a master's hand, has two hairline grain cracks at left and one at right, hairline at right nosecap, pleasing grain, color and original finish. Lock is original flintlock with unrestored touchhole, adjustable single trigger is of the early thin, straight form. Action is crisp, bore has overall light etching and shallow multi-groove rifling. Johann Christoph (1755-1818) was a member of the prolific Kuchenreiter (also ?reuter) family of high-grade Bavarian gunmakers. A top quality pistol. Est.: $2,000-$3,000. (Antique)

Steel tulip-tip ramrod. Halfstock of oil-finished walnut has 1" roundel at left apron marked "MY (?) 1807 D" (balance obscured). Condition is good showing gray barrel cleaned of heavy pitting, else lightly oxidized iron, cleaned brass. Stock is sound with occasional light dings, good markings, later varnish. Large Antique British Naval Miquelet Boarding Pistol, NVSN, .74 cal., 10.625" round-to-octagonal barrel made without sights, marked "(crown)/R", "179(?)" and what appears to be "SP" at breech; flat lockplate of the Patilla style is marked "(crown)/A", has the typical miquelet external mainspring, sears, separate curved pan, grooved battery (frizzen) face, cock of stylish form with typical long jaws and ring top screw. Brass furniture includes trigger guard with front/rear finials, large oval buttplate with long side tangs, 5" flat sideplate, spring-retained barrel band, nose band and fluted ferrule retaining the button-tip steel ramrod. Mounted to the left sideplate is a 7.125" steel belt hook (8.75" o/a incl. mount). Fullstock of varnished English walnut has carved relief panels with teardrop terminals at each side of lock, others behind the barrel tang and about the ramrod ferrule. Mfg'd late 18th Century. Condition is good retaining no original metal finishes, the barrel and belt hook being gray gunmetal cleaned of surface oxidation/discoloration, the lock smooth steel, brass cleaned bright, overall fine edges and markings. Stock is sound and smooth showing sharp carving, a .25"x.5" wood patch at wrist (likely where a nameplate once was), lovely grain, color and finish. Action is stiff but works correctly, smoothbore is clean showing overall light roughness. Lock appears to be in original configuration with correct parts, unrestored touchhole. Est.: $1,500-$2,000. Rare Likely British-Made for the India Trade Antique Flintlock Boarding or Coach Blunderbuss Pistol, Unmarked as to Maker or Origin, NVSN, approx. .60 cal., pinned 11.5" round steel barrel bells to 1.625" at muzzle, marked with decorative vine engraving surrounding a sunken cartouche having what appear to be Sanskrit letters, lacks British proof marks (due to being made for export); lockplate with rounded/pointed tail bears the same sunken cartouche ahead of the swan-neck cock and a small tulip- or lotus-like mark behind, has separate steel pan and non-roller frizzen; brass furniture comprises trigger guard with "urn" front and long rear tangs, crescent buttplate with scalloped top tang, 4.75" sideplate with steel belt lanyard ring, .75" oval plate at wrist, two fancy pipes retaining the button-tip steel ramrod. Fullstock of oil-finished walnut has fancy carved and checkered panels at wrist, raised aprons about the lock, step at lower pipe. Mfg'd late 1700s-early 1800s. Condition is near excellent showing bright steel (bit of cleaned mild pitting on barrel), with fine markings and engraving, and age-toned brass. Stock is sound and smooth with sharp checkering and carving, secure grain cracks at lower pipe and right muzzle, pleasing grain/color/finish. Action is crisp, smoothbore shows overall moderate etching. Lock appears to be original flintlock with unbushed touchhole, front sideplate screw is missing. Mfg'd ca. 1840s-60s. Condition is good showing overall lightly oxidized gray/brown gunmetal with occasional scrapes and dings. Grips with sharp carving (may be later). Deluxe Antique "The Protector" Rotary-Chamber Squeezer Pistol, by Chicago Fire Arms Co., #7689, .32 X-Short RF cal., 1.625" 2-stage round barrel has floral engraving at midpoint; circular body has two front finger-grips, hinged trigger, curved cocking bar with checkered hard rubber pad, 2.5" round sideplates with decorated edges and mother-of-pearl insets, left marked "The Protector Pat. Mch. 6, 83, Aug. 29, 93", "7689" inside; right marked "Chicago Fire Arms Co. Chicago, Ill." Internal 7-shot rotary chamber block is marked "7689". Mfg'd ca. 1890s with full nickel-plated finish. Condition is excellent retaining approx. 96% lightly toning nickel with sharp edges, markings and detail. Mother-of-pearl sideplates show brilliant iridescence, no defects. Serial numbers match. Antique Swedish Model 1850 Percussion Cavalry Pistol, with Provision for Shoulder Stock, #1518, .75 cal., 11.75" round barrel marked "WF", "WN" and "(crown)"/"C" at breech, "1518" at left; rounded lockplate is marked "(crown)"/"C" over "1856" below nipple bolster, "1518" vertically behind hammer; brass fittings include trigger guard with lower tang extending to long-oval buttcap with steel lanyard ring, serpentine sideplate, 2.5" nosecap. Steel backstrap extends from buttcap to barrel tang, has "keyhole" cutout and round hole for attaching shoulder stock (not present). Varnished walnut halfstock of near-wheelock shape has coarse "fishscale" checkering at grip, "1518", "1856" and smaller marks at left. Several screws are numbered. Mfg'd 1856. Condition is very good retaining approx. 85% thinning original blue, mottled case colors, toned brass, sharp edges and markings. Stock is sound with fine checkering, much chipping to finish. Antique Swiss Model 1851/67 Federal "Milbank-Amsler" Breechloading Military Stutzer Rifle, Altered from Percussion, #146, .41 Swiss RF cal., 30.5" round barrel with dovetailed blade front and elevation-adjustable tangent rear sights, marked "146", "1" and "4" at breech; "trapdoor" receiver is marked "B" at breech, "PK" and a sunken mark outside the breechblock, "187" and "H" inside, "X" and "146" on the thumb-tab release lever; flat lockplate is marked "Beuret Freres/Liege" ahead of the military style hammer. Steel fittings include heavy scrolled trigger guard with sling swivel, large Swiss-style buttplate, heavy nosecap with right-side 3" pipe (for triangular bayonet) and long tube enclosing the ramrod. Fullstock of oil-finished walnut marked "146" at left has single barrel key, sling swivels at midpoint and belly. Double set triggers. Mfg'd ca. 1860. Condition is good retaining perhaps traces of original finishes, else cleaned gray gunmetal having scattered pitting (esp. trigger guard, buttplate), fine edges and markings. Stock is sound and smooth showing only light age and use marks. Action is strong and works as designed, clean bore shows overall light etching, fine rifling. This breechloading mechanism was designed and patented by American Isaac Milbank, modified by Rudolf Amsler, and adopted by the Swiss Army in 1863. Est.: $1,000-$1,500. (Antique)

Revolutionary War-Era French Mle-1763 Flintlock Cavalry Pistol, with 1766 Improvements, NVSN, .70 cal., 9" barrel made without sights, illegible breech markings; 5.75" beveled lockplate has long rear teat, reinforced cock, separate pan, frizzen spring with leaf-like finial; brass furniture comprises trigger guard with front finial tang marked "X", peaked oval buttcap having elongated top tang, spring-retained 3.875" nosecap/band of the double-strap type (marked "C (crown) R") retaining the steel trumpet-tip ramrod. Oil-finished walnut fullstock. Mfg'd 1760s. Condition is very good being cleaned bright metal lacking most original markings (nosecap/band with .75" crack at lip where ramrod enters). Stock is sound and smooth showing minor marks and sliver wood loss ahead of lock, has an "X" carved at lower wrist, iron sideplate appears to be a later replacement. Antique French Mle. 1822 Bis Cavalry Pistol, by St. Etienne Arsenal, Altered to Percussion from Flintlock, #2396, .69 cal., 8" round barrel with bulbous pin front sight, marked "Mle 1822 T/bis" at upper tang; flat lockplate with rounded/pointed rear marked "Mre. Impale/de St. Etienne", has large military-style hammer; fittings include brass trigger guard on iron floorplate/tang, peaked brass buttcap with iron lanyard ring, full-length iron backstrap, brass serpentine sideplate (marked "(oval) G" and "(diamond) G" in two places) connected to nosecap retaining the captive steel cupped ramrod (added at time of alteration). 1-pc. 3/4-length stock of varnished walnut has "2396" and a .75" roundel marked "Avril" with indistinct date at left. Condition is good showing barrel and lock with smooth gunmetal gray/brown finish, brass with light patina. Stock is sound and smooth with good markings and much varnish. Antique French Mle. 1837 Navy-Marine Belt-Hook Percussion Pistol, by Chatellerault Arsenal, NVSN, .60 cal., 6" round barrel without sights, marked "Mle 1837" at top tang; serpentine back-action lockplate is marked "Mre Rle de/Chatellerault" ("Royal Manufactory at Chatellerault") behind hammer; brass fittings include trigger guard on iron floorplate, peaked buttcap with iron lanyard ring marked "(naval anchor)" and conjoined "MB", front band retaining the button-tip stirrup ramrod has long rear tang joining it to trigger guard (each with two matching proof marks). 7.75" steel belt hook/sideplate (marked with sunken oval "(star)/L" proof) mounted to left side. 3/4 stock of oil-finished walnut. Mfg'd first half of 19th century "in the white." Condition is good retaining lightly-cleaned bright steel finish, softly toned brass, sharp edges and markings. British Pattern 1842 Sea Service Percussion Pistol

Lot # 15 (Sale Order: 15 of 804)      

British Pattern 1842 Sea Service Percussion Pistol, NVSN,.56 cal., 6" barrel, browned finish, hardwood stock, bead front sight and wide "U"-notched rear sight. Flat lock has two-line engraved border and is marked "(crown/VR)TOWER 1849". Partially visible stock marker's mark is stamped into left side flat. Board of Ordnance "B(Broad Arrow)0" mark is stamped into right side wrist above a series of view marks. Top of barrel stamped with two vertical lines of proof and view marks. Barrel is smooth bored and a captive steel rammer with brass tail pipe is attached underneath. Iron trigger guard with replacement screws has brazed repairs and does not fit squarely into the stock slot. Belt hook and screw have been removed from the left side of the stock, and the brass butt cap has a handmade lanyard ring attached. Condition overall is good with an even brown patina across the barrel and hammer and mostly to the lock plate; trigger guard is brighter and may have been cleaned. There are initials scratched into the right side of the wrist, otherwise the wood is very good, showing old impressions, handling marks, and a recent scratch behind the brass tail pipe. Muzzle has rammer impressions to the front, otherwise the bore is good with rust visible to the interior surface. Hammer holds on both the half and full cock and releases smoothly. Est.: $750-$1,000. Brass fittings include trigger guard with faceted front and long rear tang reaching to buttcap with elongated upper tang, serpentine sideplate, 2.5" double-strap nosecap/band (marked "G" at left) having integral blade front sight, no provision for ramrod (characteristic of this model). Walnut fullstock has raised aprons each side of lock. Condition is very good, the barrel showing a smooth blue-brown patina, lock smooth gunmetal having a couple pits below bolster, brass with light toning.  Stock is sound and smooth showing scattered general age and use marks, added varnish. Antique British Percussion Military Rifle in the Sporting Style, Perhaps Made for an Officer or NCO, NVSN, .69 cal., key-retained 30" round barrel, with low blade front/tall notched rear sights and 3.5" hooked bayonet lug at muzzle marked "(crown)/GR/V" and two "(crowns)" at breech, "(crown)" at tang; flat lockplate with rounded/pointed tail has sporting style hammer, nipple bolster with curved flash guard; brass furniture includes trigger guard with sling loop and rear spur, 5" patchbox opening to butt trap for spare parts/patches, wide buttplate with long upper tang, 1.5" vacant oval at wrist, serpentine sideplate, two pipes retaining the button-tip steel ramrod. Fullstock of varnished walnut has 5.5" left cheekrest, raised panels each side of lock, step at lower thimble, sling loop at upper. This is a gunsmith-produced Brunswick style percussion, with the lockplate converted from flintlock, using a modified British military stock with a "Broad Arrow BO" British Board of Ordnance stamp on right side of buttstock. Condition is very good showing smooth gray gunmetal with sharp edges and markings and lightly-toned brass. Stock is sound with a 1" repaired "V" break at left lower thimble, secure 8" and 3.5" left/right hairline cracks at upper sling loop, else light marks and pleasing color and grain. (?) at ricasso and "(crown)/D" at elbow, barrel marked "1815" and indistinct proof at upper tang, "54", "(crown)/IS" in two places, "(crown)/T" and another indistinct mark at breech; beveled lockplate with rounded/pointed tail is marked "(crown)/P" and "(crown)/W" ahead of large military hammer marked "(crown)/T"; brass fittings include trigger guard on iron floorplate with two finger ribs and sling swivel, buttplate marked "1852" and "54" at top screw, serpentine sideplate, 5.625" nosecap retaining the button-tip steel ramrod. Halfstock of oil-finished walnut has single spring-retained iron band with bayonet retaining hook and sling swivel, marked "21" at left apron and another mark at left butt. Several screwheads also marked. Mfg'd ca. 1850s. Condition is good showing clean bright metal with sharp edges and markings, and toned brass. Stock is sound and smooth with nice finish. Antique Breechloading Metallic Cartridge Military Rifle, Perhaps Belgian but Styled After the French Mle. 1822, Unmarked, #506, .72 cal., 38.5" round barrel has bayonet lug 1.125" below muzzle, adjustable front blade and unusual hinged-adjustable rear sights, two tiny proofmarks at 3" breech section incorporating right-hinged "trapdoor" breechblock (marked "26/285" inside and with floating firing pin) similar to Snider system; beveled flat lockplate with rounded/pointed tail marked "(crown)/GD/54" ahead of large military-style hammer having tall knurled spur; iron fittings include squareback-profile trigger guard with sling swivel and two finger grooves on long rear tang, buttplate marked "1860" over "2387" (canceled) over "107" at top tang, serpentine sideplate marked "(crown)/W", 3 spring-retained bands (middle with sling swivel, upper of the double-strap type incorporating thimble for the button-tip ramrod). Fullstock of oil-finished walnut has raised aprons either side of lock, step at lower band, vestigial 1" roundel and .375" oval cartouche at right. Mfg'd. ca. 1860s. Condition is good, showing gray-brown lightly oxidized gunmetal (smooth lockplate), with sharp edges and markings. Walnut fullstock has raised panels at either side of lock, left is marked "428". Mfg'd 1867 in Birmingham. Condition is good retaining no original finishes, being dark brown gunmetal with scattered oxidation (lighter on the lockplate), toned brass, sharp edges and lettering. Stock is sound with the expected minor markings of age and military use, has a right-side crack from lockplate tail to trapdoor lift-knob, 1" sliver out at right-side behind nosecap. Fullstock of varnished walnut has "Ogden" (?) maker's mark behind trigger guard, "EA./1877", a 5/16" roundel and other marks at left lock apron. Mfg'd 1867. Condition is good showing lightly oxidized bright barrel (bit heavier at stock margins), else smooth gunmetal, lightly toned brass, sharp edges and markings. Stock is sound and smooth but for minor dings and scattered worming, chipping along ramrod channel, 3.25" diagonal crack opposite lock, shows pleasing grain, color and finish. Oil-finished 3/4 stock of European walnut has sling swivel at belly. Mfg'd ca. 1850s-60s. Civil War-Era Austrian M-1854 Lorenz 3-Band Percussion Infantry Rifle, NVSN, about .55 cal., 37.25" round barrel with block-blade front (doubles as bayonet lug) and graduated folding-leaf rear sights, has 6" octagonal breech section, unmarked; beveled lockplate has nipple bolster with curved rear flash-shield, is (spuriously) stamped "Richmond" in individually-applied letters vertically behind the hammer; iron fittings include 1-pc. trigger guard with sling swivel and long rear tang, straight/peaked buttplate, serpentine sideplate, three spring-retained bands (lower marked "10", middle marked "10" with sling swivel, upper marked "01" and sunken "P" has top cutout for bayonet, integral 2.25" thimble retaining the tulip-tip ramrod). Beechwood fullstock has characteristic "pecky" grain, raised aprons either side of lock, low comb. Mfg'd ca. 1850s-60s. Condition is good showing generally smooth bright metal with scattered light oxidation, sharp edges and markings. Stock is sound and smooth with good edges, mostly light age and use dings, secure grain cracks both sides at butt. Action is strong and smooth; bore shows scattered light etching, sharp rifling.
