Top of barrel marked ''J. Purdey & Sons, Audley House, South Audley Street, London'', and ''Made of Sir Joseph Whitworth's Fluid Pressed Steel''. Steel front bead, double triggers, manual safety with ejectors, cocking indicators, and ovoid plaque at bottom of stock. Shotgun is engraved on lever and at breech portion of rib, as well as the forend tip in gold, with the No. 2, indicating that this is No. 2 of a two-gun set. (The whereabouts of the other shotgun are currently unknown.) Mfg'd 1911, with only 253 produced that year. Condition is excellent. Barrels retain approx. 98% of a fine English blue showing only light micro-scratching and thinning along the high edges of rib. Approx. 85%-90% of the original case colors are retained, with thinning at high edges and balance point. Shotgun shows minor evidence of professional re-blackening to both barrels and triggerguard. This is the first of approx. 5300 mfg'd for Colt by Franchi of Italy between 1962-1966. This shotgun was retained for many years in the Colt Factory collection and is pictured on page 193 of ''Colt and Its Collectors'' put out by the Colt Collectors Assn. Rare and Interesting Colt Prototype Armsmear Over/Under Shotgun, Serial No. 1, 12 ga., 30'' vent rib twin-bead barrels choked Full/Mod., engraved and gold inlaid for Col. T.E. Bass, Manager of the Colt Company's European Sales Division; royal blue finish, roll engraved French gray frame, with western game scenes to left and right side, and Rampant Colt to bottom of frame; single selective triggers with auto ejectors, finely checkered walnut stock and forend, with original brown rubber butt pad. As pictured on page 189 of the book ''Colt and its Collectors'', by various authors. Originally mfg'd in Italy with markings to breechblock consistent with European production. Condition is excellent with some thinning to definition of engraving of frame. Stock with just moderate scuffs from light field use.
