A WORD ABOUT GRADING AND CLEANING
We will describe the grade of coins we sell to the best of our ability in the catalog. Coin holders
may contain written grades. These are often left over from the estate, or have been written by a
collector consigning his or her collection to us…sometimes decades ago. The photographs we provide should allow you to grade the coins accurately. Circulated type coins and world coins were often cleaned in the past. If this is obvious or harsh, it will be noted in the catalog but it is not our place to try and determine if every lot has been cleaned. If the cataloger notes a coin is “original”, in his opinion a coin shows original surfaces. Numeric grades will not be used unless a coin or note has been certified by one of the four major grading services (PCGS, NCG, ANACS and ICG). PCGS Photograde is the standard your cataloger uses for US coins. Similar references are used for British and Canadian coins. World and Ancient coins along with paper money will be described based on nearly a century of combined numismatic experience. Still, grading opinions are meant to be a guide and are not a guarantee.
