***Auction Highlight*** 1796 Stars BD-3 R-5+ Draped Bust Quarter Eagle $2 1/2 Graded au58+ By SEGS. HIGHLIGHT OF THE ENTIRE MONTH. Up for Auction is the Legendary 1796 With Stars $2.5 Gold Quarter Eagle. Pretty bright to medium gold patina is seen on both sides of this rare and significant early quarter eagle. Both sides are well centered on the planchet, the borders fully denticulated around devices that exhibit plenty of bold to sharp detail. A touch of softness along the right obverse border and at the central high point on that side is noted; the eagle's breast and neck are blunt due to a concentration of light adjustments marks (as made) in that area that interfered with metal flow during striking. Traces of the original satin to modestly semi-proof like finish are noted, especially in the protected areas around the peripheral devices. The eye appeal is strong.The Coinage Act of April 2, 1792, authorized the production of three gold denominations at the newly established Mint: the $10 eagle, $5 half eagle, and finally the $2.50 quarter eagle. It would not be until four years later that the first quarter eagles rolled off the presses. This was no grand undertaking in terms of quantities: while 6,196 half eagles and 4,146 eagles were coined in 1796, scarcely 1,395 combined of both varieties of 1796 quarter eagles were delivered. The half eagle turned out to be the most popular of the three denominations for general commerce, while the eagle was useful for large overseas transactions with Europe. The quarter eagle, however, did not prove especially useful in everyday commerce. In the Mint's early days, precious metal coins were mostly made to order by depositors who requested specific denominations, and the quarter eagle's bigger siblings received most of the attention. The denomination was struck only erratically and generally in small numbers in its first dozen years before production was put on hold in 1808.The first 1796 quarter eagles minted featured an obverse without stars, an unusual choice considering the half eagle and the eagle all had stars as part of their obverse designs. Likely, they were omitted as there were stars on the reverse, although over the years quite a few federal coins have had stars on both sides. The first $5 and $10 coins of 1795, continuing through 1797, had stars only on the obverse. At some point in early 1797, a decision was made to add 16 stars (in an 8x8 configuration) to represent each state of the Union at the time and mark the admission of Tennessee in June of that year. This was the first and as it turns out the last time the obverse star count on quarter eagles was adjusted each time a state was added. For the entire 1796 issue, three die pairs using two obverses and three reverses were employed. Both obverse dies shared the same master hub and date punches. The three reverse dies all bear 16 stars and were made using the same master hub for the eagle, clouds and the ribbon inscribed E PLURIBUS UNUM. The reverse hubs are believed to be by John Smith Gardner, and feature an eagle with a longer neck, visible tongue, two rows of tail feathers, and three claws visible on top of the talons clutching the arrows and branch. The later Scot hubs produced after Gardner left in 1796 have a shorter neck on the eagle, three rows of tail feathers, and a single claw on top of each talon. Only one set of dies -- the BD-3 die marriage -- was required to produce the entire run of 432 Stars on Obverse quarter eagles. Conventional wisdom indicates that they were all coined on January 14, 1797. Some research suggests that this batch may have also included some No Stars quarter eagles as part of the 432, then an additional 98 examples of the BD-3 delivered on February 28, 1797.As with most early gold, a large quantity of 1796 quarter eagles ended up in the bullion speculator's crucibles in the 1820s and 1830s, leaving only handfuls for modern numismatists. The 1796 Stars on Obverse quarter eagle is much rarer than the earlier No Stars variety as a whole; perhaps only a third as many BD-3 pieces as BD-2 No Stars coins are extant (the BD-1 pairing is of exceptional rarity). At most, 40 to 50 of the Stars on Obverse variety are thought to survive, with maybe little more than half a dozen at the Mint State level. Despite this, the popularity of the No Stars obverse has helped it capture much of the spotlight from the BD-3. However, the Stars on Obverse quarter eagle is attracting greater attention as more and more collectors and scholars come to appreciate its rarity. The offered example is very close to Mint State and an outstanding representative of this important and rare issue. Expect spirited bidding to secure this specimen and plan your strategy accordingly. All Internet Bidders agree to pay a buyer’s premium equal to eighteen Percent (18%) of the hammer price of each item they purchase.
Payment of the winning bid amount, buyer’s premium and shipping/handling charge will be made at the time the auction is reconciled by Silver Trades using the credit card on file with Proxibid.
In consideration of Silver Trades' approval of the application of the Bidder to bid in Silver Trades’ auction, Bidder hereby authorizes Silver Trades to charge the credit card provided by Bidder to Proxibid as specified herein. A $50 handling fee will be assessed for each declined credit card transaction and Bidder agrees to such charge. Requests for other payment arrangements will only be considered prior to the opening of bidding in any auction.
Silver Trades guarantees all coins to be genuine. If after receiving the coin, a buyer questions the genuineness of a coin is, the buyer has 10 days from receipt of the coin to return the coin to Silver Trades. The coin must be in the original holder and holder must not have been opened. Silver Trades will determine if the returned coin is the actual coin sold. Silver Trades will ship the coin in question to PCGS or NGC, at Silver Trades discretion, for determination if the coin is genuine or not. The buyer is responsible for all costs associated with grading and shipping if the coin is deemed genuine by PCGS or NGC. If coin is deemed not genuine, Silver Trades will refund purchase price of coin and shipping and grading costs.
Genuineness of a coin refers to the authenticity of the coin. That the coin is the denomination stated, made of the metal such coin was made of and minted by the proper minting authority in the year stamped on te coin. Genuineness specifically does not include the grade of the coin. Coin grading is a subjective description in the opinion of the cataloguer or third party grading service. It is the bidder’s responsibility to determine condition and value of the coin or lot.

Silver Trades does guarantee the authenticity of all coins being auctioned, but in no way guarantees the condition or grade of any coin being auctioned regardless of any subjective opinion put forth by Silver Trades. It is the buyer’s sole responsibility to be the judge of the coins grade/condition by the pictures/video provided. Buyers are further encouraged to contact Silver Trades with any questions prior to the start of the auction.
Internet bidders acknowledge that they are not be able to inspect the lots beyond photo and or video examination and additionally by questions put to Silver Trades by telephone prior to the auction, and that such examination is not as good as if they examined it in person. It is the Bidder’s responsibility to determine condition, value or any other determinative factor. Silver Trades shall endeavor to describe in detail each item and any pertinent information about it. Silver Trades will not be responsible for any errors or omissions in the description of the merchandise unless it is a material, and intentional misrepresentation of the item itself. Material misrepresentation specifically excludes coin grading. Bidder agrees that everything is sold as is and that they may not return any item they purchase for any reason except an intentional and material misrepresentation of the item itself made Silver Trades. Bidder’s sole remedy in the event of an intentional and material misrepresentation of an item shall be to return the item, at their expense and in the same condition it was shipped to them. If Silver Trades agrees that the item was materially and intentionally misrepresented we will refund the Bidder’s purchase price to him/her. Bidder agrees that under no circumstances whatsoever will Silver Trades ever be liable to any bidder for an amount greater than the purchase price of the item they purchased.
All sales are final, no lots are sold on approval; placing a bid is a legally binding obligation. There are no returns or exchanges. All lots are sold as is. Due diligence to verify the condition and description of a lot is the sole responsibility of the Bidder prior to placing any bid. Returns may only be made with the advance written authorization of Silver Trades and are in Silver Trades’ sole discretion to approve. To request a return you must provide a written request fully explaining the basis for the return no later than 3 days after your receipt of the lot. Under no circumstances will any amounts other than the winning bid amount be refunded. A restocking charge of 25% of the full invoice amount may apply in Silver Trades’ sole discretion. Any allowed returns must be received in exactly the same condition as when originally shipped to Buyer, or they will be returned to buyer at Buyer’s cost. Any unauthorized returns will be refused.
If any dispute occurs between Buyer and Silver Trades that cannot be resolved, then the parties agree to the rules, regulations and procedures of the dispute resolution described herein and agree to the following procedures for resolution of the dispute: If either party alleges that the other party is in default under this agreement, then the dispute or allegation shall be submitted to binding arbitration in the State of New Jersey. Silver Trades shall select a neutral arbitrator. The arbitration process shall be initiated by either party requesting arbitration which must be served upon the other party by certified mail. Failure to in the arbitration is a default. Each party shall simply present their case (limited to a maximum of one hour for each party) to the arbitrator. The parties agree and acknowledge that they are completely waiving their rights to have the dispute heard in a court of law. The parties agree that the arbitrator shall have complete jurisdiction over the dispute and can issue an award to the prevailing party. Arbitration fees shall be paid by the party not prevailing in the dispute or as seen fit by the arbitrator. Any award determined by the arbitrator shall be binding and the prevailing party shall be awarded full reimbursement of its actual paid fees in connection with the dispute.
By signing up to participate in a Silver Trades auction, Bidder specifically agrees to the dispute resolution specified in the foregoing paragraph as Bidder’s sole means to resolve any and all disputes which may arise with Silver Trades. By doing so Bidder specifically agrees that Bidder will not file a dispute of any kind with Proxibid, a credit card, PayPal or any other third parties. In the event that Bidder violates this provision, in consideration of Silver Trades’ approval of the application of the Bidder to bid in Silver Trades’ auction, Bidder confesses judgment to fraud having been committed by Bidder against Silver Trades and further agrees that Bidder is liable to Silver Trades for all damages, losses and costs, including time charges, resulting.
Bidder’s bid at all times represents an irrevocable offer by Bidder to enter into a binding contract to purchase the lot in accordance with the specific provisions of the listing.
There are no provisions for the placing of bids to 'mark the lot' or to 'test the system', etc. and any requests to cancel bids on these bases, or due to a Bidder not reading a listing, not being familiar with the bidding platform, not doing proper due diligence or failing to maintain proper control over Bidder’s bidding terminal, will be denied. Such requests to cancel bids are null and void and will not excuse Bidder from Bidder’s legal and contractual obligation to complete a transaction.
If you are the successful Bidder, you agree to pay the amount of your bid plus all applicable taxes and charges in the time and manner designated by the Silver Trades. Failure to make such payment shall be deemed to be a breach of these general terms and conditions, and, in addition to all other rights and remedies Silver Trades may have under applicable law, you will be charged a re-stocking fee on transactions equal to (a) 25% of the amount of your invoice, plus $25; or (b) the cost associated with re-marketing and re-selling the lot, whichever is greater.
Bidder is responsible for any and all costs associated with collection of amounts owing from the Bidder, until collected; and Silver Trades reserves the right to bill and collect any such costs from Bidder. Costs associated with collection may include, but are not limited to, time charges, incidental expenses, attorney fees and costs associated with the use of a collection agency.
The winning Bidder’s failure to complete the purchase in accordance with the terms provided herein and in the listing will cause the Bidder to be faced with all, or any combination of the following measures: elimination of all future bidding privileges on the hosting site; credit agency reporting; legal and/or collection action.
These terms and conditions and each listing contain all of the provisions applicable to the agreement between Silver Trades as seller and each Bidder. The provisions of these terms and conditions and of each listing supersede all other agreements, representations or understandings, whether prior or contemporaneous, oral or written, between the parties concerning that subject matter. These terms and conditions and provisions of each listing shall be binding on Buyer’s heirs, beneficiaries, executors, successors and assigns.
If any provision of these terms and conditions or of any listing be void, unlawful or unenforceable under applicable law, that provision shall be modified to the minimum extent possible to comply with applicable law, or if modification is not possible, deleted and severed from the remaining provisions. Any such modification, deletion or severing shall not affect the enforceability or validity of any of the remaining provisions
Silver Trades is providing Internet pre-auction and live bidding as a service to Bidder. Bidder acknowledges and understands that this service may or may not function correctly the day of the auction. Under no circumstances shall Bidder have any kind of claim against Silver Trades or anyone else if the Internet service fails to work correctly before or during the live auction. Silver Trades will not be responsible for any missed bids from any source. Internet bidders who desire to make certain their bid is acknowledged should use the proxi-bidding feature and leave their maximum bid 24 hours before the auction begins. Silver Trades reserves the right to withdraw or re-catalog items in this auction.
The auctioneer shall advance the bidding at his own discretion. Silver Trades may withdraw any item before or during the auction. Should a tie or a dispute arise between two bidders, the auctioneer may, at his discretion, reopen the bidding until the property is sold. The record of the auction made by Silver Trades shall be conclusive.
Silver Trades may refuse a buyer’s number to anyone for any reason. Bidder agrees to provide any identification Silver Trades may request including but not limited to: drivers license, photocopies of credit cards, Social Security card or US Passport.
