1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS, 454 LS5, 4spd Convertible
This 1970 Chevelle SS LS5 454 convertible is a well-optioned machine, factory equipped with the biggest and most powerful engine that you can get with factory Air Conditioning. That numbers matching, original LS5 454 is mated to the numbers matching M-22 "Rock Crusher" 4spd and original 3.31 Posi-traction center chunk bringing up the rear. Other rare options also include factory Cowl Induction, Power Windows, Power Door Locks, Auxiliary Light Group, Console, Cushioned Rim Steering Wheel, and Tilt. The car is documented by NCRS Shipping Data Report and is also listed in the LS5 Chevelle SS Registry.
Her original scheduled production date was December 08, 1969, the Van Nuys, California plant. She shipped new to a dealership located in Abilene, Texas. From there, she spent most of her life bouncing between Texas and California. By 1996, this big block Chevelle had seen better days, sitting abandoned in Glendora, California. It had good bones, free of any major rust or body damage, but sorely needed restoration. The project sat dormant until 2000 when it was finally time to bring her back to her former glory. She underwent a complete nut-and-bolt rotisserie restoration.
The 454 LS5 engine was balanced and blue printed to 10.5:1 compression and stock LS5 cam. The block was bored .030 over with Speed Pro Pistons, chrome-moly rings. Heads were rebuilt to factory specifications with hardened valve seats for use with modern unleaded gas. Points were swapped out in favor of a single wire M&H Electric Fabricators Breakerless SE kit. The stock low-profile intake manifold is topped by the rebuilt Rochester Quadrajet. The rest of the driveline was likewise rebuilt to stock specifications, aside from the Spicer severe-duty U-joints.
Spent gasses exhaust out of a Gardner reproduction complete with chrome “stinger” tail pipes. The F41 Special Performance Suspension was likewise rebuilt to stock specifications, right down the spiral-adjust shocks, 14x7 sport wheels, and Concours correct Goodyear Polyglass, F70-14 tires.
Body and frame were taken down to bare metal and repainted with stock colors. The front fenders are not likely original, due the to “SS” emblem placement, consistent with the call out location for the 1969 model year, rather than the correct 1970 position. The frame, GM Semigloss Black, and the body finished in Ditzler two-stage Cortez Silver with black stripes. Paint and body were completed in November 2001, final assembly was completed in May of 2002.
All of the glass is date code correct. The entire interior was also restored and still show in excellent condition. Everything works. Which, in a car this highly optioned, is really saying something. She is factory equipped with Power Convertible Top (still optional at the time this car was built), Delco AM/FM Radio, Factory A/C, Power Steering, Power Windows, Power Door Locks, Electric Seatback Releases, Auxiliary Light Group (includes Ashtray, Luggage, Map and Underhood Lights – as well as Monitor Fiber-optic Washer Fluid Monitor), Vinyl Strato-bucket seats, Console, Special Instrumentation, Remote Mirror and Tinted Glass.
From 2002 to 2004 she hit the regional show circuit winning “Best of Class” and “Show Stopper” awards. She changed hands shortly after her 2004 feature story in Chevy High Performance, finding a long term home in Houston, Texas. She was driven sparingly, about 1,000 miles over the past 13 years, displayed in a climate-controlled private museum setting. In December of last year, she underwent a full mechanical service and tune up, including an oil change, radiator hot tank and clean, coolant system flush, transmission flush and fill, fuel system flush, carb rebuild, new spark plugs, distributor cap and rotor, and more. She is real, right, turn-key and road ready!
