The history on these bikes is very interesting! They were built for the Chinese military from 1957 to the late 70s into the early 80s. Were also used in the Vietnam conflict by the NVA. The design of these bikes is a direct copy of the 1938 BMW R71. The Soviet Union in 1940, discreetly bought several of the BMW R71's from Nazi Germany and then reverse engineered and manufactured a copy of the R71, called the M72. The M72 was built for the Red Army in the Ural Mountains in order to keep the plant out of the range of Nazi bombers. In the 1950's the Soviets began manufacturing a motorcycle of their own design, The Ural. Subsequently the Russians sold the tooling and production line for the M72 to China in 1956. China had been in the process of reverse engineering a German Zundapp KS500 for their military, but instead bought the M72 from the Soviets and produced it as the CJ 750 from 1957 through the early 1980s. Normalization of relations with the US in the 1970s allowed for importation of other motorcycle brands, and spelled the end for the CJ 750. The Chang Jiang (CJ) got its name from the river the manufacturing plant was constructed next to in China. Many of the CJ 750's were exported, and there is a thriving market for parts and service of the CJ 750 inside and outside of China.
