S&W First Model Second Issue .22 Revolver w/ Case

Lot # 4 (Sale Order: 4 of 311)

SERIAL NUMBER: 13902 DESIGN: Smith & Wesson First Model Second Issue revolver accepts 5 .22 shorts and carries 7 shots in its non-fluted cylinder which is marked with 185...more5 and 1859 patent dates. This tip-up model was the second issue of S&W's first metallic cartridge firearm. About 117,000 of these were made between 1860 and 1868 and the serial number of this one is low. Quite similar to the first issue in appearance, the second issue has a flat-sided frame. NOTE: This early S&W comes with an original S&W first-issue black gutta percha hinged-lid case with high relief markings on the lid showing a revolver and the words "Manufactured only by Smith & Wesson, Springfield, Massachusetts." The case is in good shape with the only blemishes being two stable seasoning checks and one chip at the base on the left side. These cases came only with the first and second issue revolvers. Most of the cases did not survive. MATERIAL/FINISH COMPOSITION: Blued barrel. Silver plated brass frame. Rosewood grips. CONDITION: Good, both gun and case. Most of the silver remains on the brass frame. The blued barrel shows rust. The release latch is frozen shut with corrosion. INVENTORY NO./CATEGORY: 4272-001/NRR ESTIMATE: $1800-$2300
