18th Century German Executioner's Sword

Lot # 4 (Sale Order: 4 of 269)

"34.5"" blade length. 44.25"" overall with hilt. Double edged blade with squared tip and 8"" single centered fullers to both sides. Iron hilt has a 7.5"" crossguard with helix twisted bulb quillons and a heavy pear shaped pommel. Full length tang is peened to pommel. Leather throat guard still present and intact. Grip of hilt has skeletonized brass fittings over an attractive ray/shark skin shagreen wrapping. Blade has etchings including floral scroll along edges of blades on both sides, an etching of a criminal hanging from a gallows forward of fuller to one side, and a very weak etching of what appears to be a silhouette of a man on obverse side forward of fuller. Fullers are etched with inscriptions to both sides including Die Herren Steuren Dem Un Heill Ich Exuquire Ihr ents Urtheil. 1707 (loosely translating to ""The men steer/tax/control to the salvation and I wash/clean her according to the judge/verdict. 1707"") to one side, and Wan Dem Sunder Wird abgesprochen das Leben so wird er Unter Mein gegeben (loosely translating to ""When to the sinner becomes agreed the life so becomes he under my given hand"") to obverse side.Designed specifically for decapitation, these swords were widely used during the 16th and 17th centuries in Central Europe. The blunt tip and heavy flat blade assisted the executioner in bringing criminals to justice with one swift swing of his sword. Executions via sword were popular until around the early 18th century, and the last documented executions via sword took place in Switzerland in 1867 and 1868. <p class=""MsoNormal"">Good. European Iron Barreled Blunderbuss with Spring-Loaded Bayonet

Lot # 7 (Sale Order: 7 of 269)

"Nominally .75 caliber, flaring to 1.08"" at the muzzle. 14.5"" pinned round barrel with a prominent nocksform. SN: NSN. Bright finish, brass furniture, European hardwood...more stock. Single shot muzzleloading flintlock blunderbuss with ""snap"" bayonet. Lightly engraved 5"" flat faceted flint lock is singed Dayer in script. Lock with rounded, fenced and bridled iron pan and flat faceted swan neck cock. No proofs on barrel on top or bottom. Gun is equipped with a top mounted folding bayonet with an 11.25"" triangular blade. Brass furniture is lightly engraved and consists of a flat brass side plate, triggerguard with acorn finial and buttplate, along with a ramrod thimble and entry pipe. An old and apparently correct horn tipped wooden ramrod with iron wiper at the end is secured by the pipes. Although the overall styling of the gun is absolutely English in appearance, the lack of any form of British proof marks essentially removes that as a possibility as no English gun maker would be willing to run afoul of the extremely strict British proof laws. That leaves Europe or America as the source for the gun and a search of all available references, including Stockel reveals no maker's named ""Dayer"". An attractive and solid example of a working coaching carbine or blunderbuss with minimal ornamentation, but well made and very serviceable that could date from as early as the fourth quarter of the 18th century to the end of the first quarter of the 19th century.   Good to very good. Bore fair, heavily oxidized and pitted, dark and dirty. Barrel with a salt and pepper patina showing evenly distributed freckles of oxidized discoloration and pinpricking along with some light pitting. Lock cleaned to bright, in original flint and not restored with some surface pitting. Barrel in original flint as well. Lock remains mechanically functional. Snap bayonet functional, but the deployment spring is weak so it does not fully extend when released. The locking mechanisms that secured the bayonet when collapsed and when extended both work as they should. Stocks with some moderate wear, scattered bump, dings and mars, some minor wood loss and small repairs around the pin holes with the upper pin an old brass replacement. EST: $2000 - 3000 NOTES REGARDING FIREARMS*Requires Federal Firearms License (FFL). If you are not a license holder, we can ship to a license holder of your choosing for transfer.

Brass Barreled English Flintlock Blunderbuss by Ketland & Co.

Lot # 8 (Sale Order: 8 of 269)

"Nominally .85 caliber bore, measuring 1.25"" at the muzzle. 15.5"" wedge retained multi-stage octagon to round barrel with swelled cannon muzzle. SN: NSN. Brass barrel, ...morebrass furniture, walnut stock. Muzzleloading flintlock smoothbore blunderbuss with an overall length of 31"". 5.375"" flat stepped lock with pronounced teat at rear is engraved KETLAND / & Co in two lines. Lock with iron rounded fenced and bridled pan and rounded reinforced cock. Cock appears to be an old, period of use replacement as it is too thick for the tumbler to pass all the way through and exhibits some wobble. Lock itself is in original flint and endoscope examination of the breech confirms the barrel is in original flint as well without any welding, restoration or repairs. Top flat of barrel engraved LONDON and breech with pre-1813 Birmingham proof marks. Brass mountings include an open-work side plate, triggerguard, buttplate, ramrod pipes and oval wrist escutcheon. Walnut stock with raised shell motif apron carved around the breech plug tang. Iron sling swivels in toe of stock and in forend. Includes an old iron trumpet head ramrod of the appropriate length that is threaded at the end for cleaning accessories. Includes an old leather sling with brass buckle that has been shortened and altered to fit the gun correctly. The firm of Ketland & Co operated as a ""Wholesale Gun & Birmingham Warehouse"" from circa 1785 through 1800. They primarily sold wholesale export guns produced by the Birmingham trade and probably of their own make as well, which were often spuriously marked ""London"" although the guns were neither produced nor sold sold there. The Ketland gunmaking family worked from circa 1766-1820 and included the founder Thomas Ketland who worked circa 1766-1787, John & Thomas Ketland (worked circa 1789-1900), Ketland & Walker (worked circa 1799-1812), William Ketland (worked circa 1802-1807) and William Ketland & Co.(worked circa1808-1831). Very good. Bore dark, dirty and heavily oxidized. Brass with a medium brass patina with a greenish tone. Lock with a pewter patina and scattered surface oxidation, discoloration and some light pitting that partially obscures the lock markings. Other markings remain clear and crisp. Mechanically functional, lock in original flint with replaced cock. Side plate with crack in lower leg. Stock with scattered bumps, dings and mars, a 3.75"" surface crack on the obverse and some chipped loss around the wedges. Sling about good. American Made British Style Short Land Pattern Flintlock Musket

Lot # 13 (Sale Order: 13 of 269)

".76 caliber. 40"" pinned round barrel. SN: NSN. Bright finish, brass furniture, walnut stock. Single shot smoothbore muzzleloading flintlock musket. Unmarked banana shap...moreed lock is of the pre-1777 style with a single sear screw visible behind the swan neck cock. Lock measures 6.5"" in overall length with pronounced teat at the rear, an integral and fenced unbridled iron pan and a trefoil finial on the steel spring. Interior of lock marked with a pair of punch dots. Lock in original flint with a modern cast replacement mainspring. Steel (frizzen) with a crude refacing that is likely period. Barrel without external proof marks, suggesting possible American or Continental origin, but not English manufacture. Barrel marked with an engraved rack number that reads J54, although the ""J"" could be a ""T"". The gun differs from conventional British-made ""Short Land"" pattern muskets in that the barrel measures 40"" rather than 42"". Additionally the palm swell at the entry pipe is significantly smaller, and there are four ramrod thimbles and an entry pipe making a total of five instead of four. The brass furniture is also cruder than typical British work with the stepped buttplate tang simpler than the English-made ones typical of a Short Land Pattern Board of Ordnance musket, a Wilson and those by other contractors. The side plate and triggerguard are also more roughly made than comparable British ones. The nose cap is a simple piece of sheet brass rather than a cast piece, a feature typical of the earliest of the British Long Land muskets but which was abandoned by the British long before the adoption of the Short Land Pattern guns. The gun is equipped with a brass acorn shaped wrist escutcheon that is unmarked. A sling swivel is present at the front of the tiggerguard bow, but the upper swivel is missing. A lug for a socket bayonet is located on top of the barrel 1.125"" from the muzzle. A button head iron ramrod is secured by the pipes. It is roughly 38"" in length and about 2"" short of full length for this gun. It shows good age and could be from the period of use. This musket is most likely of American origin and was probably assembled from available parts that included some recycled parts as well as newly made ones. The lock may be of Dutch origin and the barrel may be Continental. However the overall appearance, fit, finish and quality of workmanship is typical of American work in the fourth quarter of the 18th century. Whether this gun was made prior to hostilities as a ""Committee of Safety"" musket, during the American Revolution in one of the many Philadelphia area manufactories or assembled as a post-war militia musket circa 1790 is almost impossible to establish. It is worth noting that the rack marking on the barrel is quite similar to known examples found on City of New York marked muskets from the period of the Revolution. A well used, yet well preserved example of an apparent American rendering of a ""Brown Bess"" that could as easily be Revolutionary War period as Federal Period. Good. Fair bore with heavy oxidation, dark and rusted. Metal with a thickly oxidized brown patina with moderate amounts of light surface roughness. Unmarked with the exception of the engraved rack number on the barrel. Mechanically functional lock. Brass with a rich golden patina with greenish tones. Stock with moderate wear, some chipped wood loss around the pins, in particular on the reverse at the tip where a nominal 1"" long by .3"" wide chip is missing. There is moderate wear and chipping around the lock mortise with some old added square nails to support the lock under the tail. Double Barrel Flintlock Pistol with Snap Bayonet by Williams

Lot # 14 (Sale Order: 14 of 269)

".56 caliber. 7"" tapered round barrels. SN: NSN. Browned and color casehardened finish, with iron furniture and a checkered walnut stock. Double barrel, muzzleloading fl...moreintlock pistol with snap bayonet. 4.125"" flat stepped beveled locks with pronounced teat at rear, bridled and fenced rounded waterproof pans and roller frizzers are marked Williams in script. The flat beveled swan neck cocks are lightly engraved. Exterior of barrels are unmarked, while the bottom of one barrel is marked TWISTED and with a partially legible stamp that appears to be a crude {CROWN} / 15. This is not any type of proof or inspection typically encountered and it is not a British military crowned inspection mark. The iron butt cap and triggerguard have simple foliate engraving and the triggeguard has a nicely executed pineapple finial. Pistol includes double triggers and a 5"" triangular spring loaded bayonet mounted on the rib between the barrels, activated by a release mounted on the engraved breech piece. Includes a brass tipped wood ramrod of more recent vintage. While numerous British and American gunsmiths named ""Williams"" worked during the period that this pistol was likely produced (circa 1st quarter of the 19th century), the lack of proof marks both above and below the barrel rule out English production. The style of pistol is not one typically associated with American production, so it is likely of Continental origin, from a country without proof laws at the time. An attractive and somewhat unusual flintlock pistol with the always popular snap bayonet feature. About fine. Smooth bores about good with moderate oxidation and some pitting. Barrels with much of the Damascus patterned brown finish, with some thinning, wear and loss and scattered surface oxidation along with some very light pitting. Locks with a dark grayish brown patina. Mechanically functional, although the obverse cock hangs up sometime on half cock while falling from full cock. Snap bayonet functions correctly although the deployment spring is a little weak. Stock good with a repaired crack running from the lower rear of the obverse lock to the triggerguard. Checkering remains fairly crispy and the wood shows scattered bumps, ding and mars. EST: $2500 - 3500 NOTES REGARDING FIREARMS*Requires Federal Firearms License (FFL). If you are not a license holder, we can ship to a license holder of your choosing for transfer.

Muzzleloading double barrel flintlock shotgun. Flat faceted stepped flint locks are 4.625"" in length and are marked D Egg in script. Locks are lightly engraved with rounded and fenced bridled pans with roller frizzers and flat faceted swan neck cocks that are engraved ensuite with the locks. Touchholes are relined and pans are resurfaced with gilt. Frizzens do not fit the pans perfectly when closed. Breeches are decorated with gilt hunting scenes of a dog flushing pheasants, and the breeches and breech block are engraved with fine foliate scrolls. The barrel rib is marked LONDON in gold. The bottoms of the barrels show both Birmingham and London commercial proofs, indicating the barrels were likely produced in Birmingham and then used by Egg when he assembled the gun with the final completed firearm being proved in London. Iron furniture with light decorative engraving, particularly on the tirggerguard bow and finial, toe of shotgun with German silver shield shaped escutcheon that is unmarked. Wedge escutcheon of German silver as well. Includes a quality brass tipped wood ramrod that is of more recent vintage.Durs Egg (1748-1831) was the son of Swiss gunmaker Leon Egg. He emigrated to England and went to work for John Twigg in London circa 1772, where he learned the trade and became a naturalized citizen of England in 1791. He was a contractor to the British Ordnance Department 1784-1820 and received a number of British firearms patents for his various innovations. In 1815 Egg was made the official gun maker to King George IV and the Duke of York. Egg went blind in 1822 and died in 1831. His son George Frederick Egg and son in law Frederick Nicholls Devey both worked as gunmakers and continued the family business under the Durs Egg name through 1837, with John Egg (his grandson it appears) operating the business under the Durs Egg name from 1841-1865. The gun offered here was almost certainly produced during the lifetime of Durs Egg, as it appears to date from the first quarter of the 19th century. A lovely early 19th century flintlock double by a world famous English maker that displays very nicely. Very good. Bores about good, are dark, dirty and moderately oxidized with moderate roughness. Barrels with some of the Damascus patterned brown finish remaining, mixed with a moderately oxidized brown patina that makes the barrels appear to retain more finish than they do. Metal with some evenly distributed pinpricking and lightly scattered roughness. Touchholes relined, locks possibly with some restoration, but appear to be in original flint. Mechanically functional. Wood lightly refinished with crisp checkering and scattered bumps, dings and mars, a couple of minor chips around the lock mortises and a couple of minor slivers out along the upper edges of the forend. Blair formed another partnership with Adam Little, a Tower of London gunsmith, circa 1814-1818. Both makers also worked independently both before and after the period of their partnership. A lovely turn of the 19th-century English fowler in original flint with some restoration to the wood. Very good. Bore is moderately oxidized, dark, dirty and pitted. Barrel with a moderately oxidized plum brown patina that is somewhat mottled with some gray peaking through and what appears to be some traces of period brown finish. Flintlock North West Trade Gun Attributed by Barnett

Lot # 25 (Sale Order: 25 of 269)

".58 caliber smoothbore. 36.25"" pinned multi-stage octagon to round barrel. SN: NSN. Blued finish, brass and iron furniture, walnut stock. Single shot muzzleloading flin...moretlock trade gun. Round-tailed lock in original flint configuration with a rounded, fenced and bridled iron pan and rounded reinforced cock. Lock has no maker's mark at the tail but is typical of the mid-19th century work of Barnett. Lock with the Hudson Bay Company's {Tombstone Fox/EB} trademark under the pan. The gun conforms to typical North West gun examples with simple brass furniture, the typical dragon motif serpent three-screw side plate, oversized iron triggerguard, full-length stock with sheet brass reinforcement near the tip and corrugated brass ramrod pines that secure a brass tipped wood ramrod.
