Description

Cowan's Arms and Armor Department is pleased to offer one of the finest selections of Arms and Armor assembled for sale in recent memory. Featuring the remarkable collection of Lore and Dave Squier (Lots 1-171), this auction promises to be the most important sale of fine Japanese Arms and Armor since the Dr. Walter Compton Collection in 1992. While nearly every lot in this collection would be a fine addition to any collection, Cowan's is pleased to offer two very rare Somen mempo (Lots 134, 135), a partial set of Edo period armor (Lot 144), and a Shinshinto tachi featuring over 100 characters (lot 142). The Squier's collection spans over 500 years of Japanese history and not only features the deadly aesthetics of the blade itself, but the skillful execution and design of the fittings which accompany them for which their makers are so justly celebrated.

27.75" blade length with suguha hamon.  Ubu nakago, mumei, machi okuri.  Two mekugi-anaTsuba with raised relief tiger.  Iron fuchi-kashira with dragons amid clouds.  Fine lacquer scabbard.  Missing kurikata.

Condition: Blade in fair state of polish with all details visible. One small area of scuffing near habaki. Minor shin-tetsu. Attractive patina on tang. Overall a handsome katana.

27.25" blade with suguha hamon, with some ko-nie.  Tang with two mekugi-ana resembling Satsuma work.  Nashiji hada.  Interesting iron tsuba.  Military style fuchi-kashira and menuki.  A handsome shinto sword.

19.25" blade length, complex style hamon. Tang with one mekugi-ana and full signature Kami Katsu Minamoto Hiroshige.  Excellent high-quality signed fuchi-kashira depicting priests in a bamboo forest. Dragon menuki.  Scabbard of black lacquer with pockets for small knife. Iron tsuba with samurai with gold details. 

Condition: Blade in fair state of polish except at boshi in an attempt to polish. No kizu. Modern re-wrap. Fine wakizashi.

24.87" blade with midare hamon.  Very attractive tang with two character signature and one mekugi-ana. Copper habaki.  Iron tsuba with chiseled eagle. Poor quality menuki of dragons. Lacquer scabbard. Brass dragonfly kojiri.

Condition: Blade is fair state of polish. No defects but some staining and scratches. Tang with great patina.

Rare Russo-Japanese Murata Blade in Mountings for High Ranking Officer

Lot # 34 (Sale Order: 34 of 410)      

28" slender blade characteristic of Murata style.  With thick midare hamon. Unsigned tang with one hole. Cat-scratch silver habaki. Silver takanoha mon. 1886 cavalry mounts.

Condition: Blade is almost full polish with only a few minor stains.  One piece construction.  Original mounts have patina, but good.

Showato Japanese Samurai Sword (Katana) in Shin-Gunto Mounts signed Tenryuko Yoshitaka

26.5" (2 shaku 2 sun 2 bu) handmade shinogi-zukuri blade with suguha hamon and itame hada.  Ubu nakago with one mekugi-ana and five-character signature "Tenryuko Yoshitaka".  The whole in military mounts.

Condition: Blade is in a good state of polish with some minor areas of spider rust and oxidation. Small dents on mune near kissaki  Some loose grain.

Very Attractively Mounted Long Japanese Samurai Sword (Katana)

Lot # 36 (Sale Order: 36 of 410)      

27" long blade ko-choji hamone with masame hada.  Tang unsigned with two mekugi-ana.  Mounts double gold-plated habaki.  Good iron tsuba carved with gold dragon and gold highlights.  Tsuka with gold highlights and signed, depicting priest with excellent detail.  Very attractive kozuka and kogai en suite.  Large gilt dragon menuki.  Mounts on blade are attractive and would get a good paper if submitted to shinsa.

Condition: Blade with numerous micro-chips along mono-uchi.  Stained with some shintetsu. Lacquer scabbard in fair condition with some damage. Mounts are excellent throughout.

Japanese Showato Katana in Gunto Mounts

Lot # 37 (Sale Order: 37 of 410)      

26" (2 shaku, 1 sun, 8 bu) shinogi-zukuri with chu kissaki (medium point) and ihori mune (ridged back).  Masame hada (straight grain) with midare hamon (temper) in ko-nie.  8.75" kurijiri nakago (tang) with one mekugi-ana (peg hole), kasho yasuri (file marks), and 11-character chiseled katanamei (signature) in the style of showato smiths with other side of tang showing Showa 6 date (1931). Mounts are of typical gunto form with gilt tsuba (guard) and highlights.

Condition: Blade is mostly bright with some scattered areas of oxidation.  Grain and temper line are somewhat weak.  Some very minor rust on cutting edge with no major flaws. Tang is a gray color with little rust. Mounts retain a pleasing gilt color with some minor scratches and dents to scabbard.

A Good Japanese Samurai Sword (Katana) Signed Bishu Osfaune Sukemitsu

Lot # 42 (Sale Order: 42 of 410)      

Deeply curved 26" blade with Bizen choji hamon.  Tang is singed Bishu Osfaune Sukemitsu (possibly added later as an attribution).  Nakango with 2 holes and has been cleaned.  Very finely signed gilt nanako fuchi, though it is mismatched with kashira.  Fine gilt menuki.  Plain tsuba with some gilt. Gilt copper habaki. Black lacquer scabbard.  

Condition: Blade is mostly full polish with some staining. No chips. Some minor spots of pitting. Some repair to tsuka wrapping near kashira.

26" long blade with midare hamon, details not visible.  Nagako with three mekugi-ana.  Tang with good patina and seven-character signature "(?) Mino (no) Kami Fujiwara Tsuguhiro". The whole mounted in D-guard style kyo-gunto mounts with some remaining gilt. 

Condition: Blade is scuffed throughout. Hamon visible. Several micro-chips in edge. Kissaki with damage and several micro-chips.  Nickel scabbard with dents but clean and shiny. Sword should polish well.

20.75" blade with midare hamon. Ubu nakago with six-character signature "Owari Kuni ju nin Kunitsugu" and two mekugi-ana. The whole mounted in Russo-Japanese mounts with nickel-plated scabbard with silver mon on backstrap of grip.  

Condition: Blade is partially polished. No serious flaws. One minor area of pitting.  One minor area of pitting between carrying rings of scabbard. Some gilt remaining on guard.

Koto Bizen Japanese Samurai Sword (Katana), Signed and Dated

Lot # 47 (Sale Order: 47 of 410)      

27.125" blade with suguha hamon and, masame hada. Nakago with three mekugi-ana signed with nine-character signature "Bizen (no) kuni ju Naga(?)", the remainder obscured by rust, and dated "Tensho 1" (1573), possibly Tensho 2 (1574).  Handle converted to military use with matching fuchi-kashira.  Military saya with some damage. 

Condition: Blade is fairly clean with rust staining and some pitting at boshi. Blade has some shingane throughout. One large area of fukure  approximately 7" from boshi.
