Percussion Target Rifle

Lot # 29 (Sale Order: 27 of 192)

.32 caliber, 24" octagonal barrel, no S/N.  Blade front sight with aperture rear sight and semi buckhorn elevator rear sight.  Brass triggerguard, buttplate, toe plate, and patch box.  Unmarked back-action lock with double set-trigger and threaded barrel.  Replacement ramrod. Barrel inscription "E. Phillips" reveals the origin to be from the shop of prominent New York gunsmith, Edwin Phillips, who created some of the most elegant heavy percussion target rifles of the Civil War period. Examples are pictured in Swinney and Rowe, "The New York State Firearms Trade," Vol. 5, pp. 383-389. Believed to have been designed as a "buggy rifle," as its barrel easily unscrews from breech/buttstock.

Condition: Good condition.  Barrel has a dark plumb patination with some thinning on sharp edges.  Some age darkening to other parts, stock shows minor handling imperfections with no serious cracks or splits.  Action functions normally; bore is fair to good with some old fouling.

Twice-Converted Harpers Ferry U.S. Model 1840 Rifled-Musket

Lot # 31 (Sale Order: 29 of 192)

.69 caliber, 42" barrel, no S/N.  Bright barrel secured to military stock by three spring-retained barrel bands.  Lockplate marked forward of hammer with "[eagle]/US".  Marked rear of hammer "HARPERS/FERRY/1841".  Sideplate and tail of triggerguard marked with matching "12" rack numbers, as do barrel bands.  Lockplate interior marked "A12", with back of hammer marked "12".  Button end ramrod.  Top of barrel marked in two lines "BUTTERFIELD'S/PHILADA".

The Butterfield Patent priming method, designed by Jesse Butterfield and patented in 1855, utilized a disk of fulminate mercury stored in an attached reserve forward of the hammer.  In 1859, Butterfield was awarded a contract from the U.S. government for the right to convert 5,000 arms in the arsenals to his system.  Final numbers and other data related to the completion, or lack thereof, to the contract have been lost.  In any case, this arm seems to have been converted at an unknown time from the Butterfield system to the more conventional percussion cap primer.

Condition: Good.  Barrel retains a mostly bright finish with some scattered oxidation and light rust spots.  Some marking to metal from old conversions.  Markings legible.  Stock shows some minor wood loss around barrel but is otherwise free of major cracks and damage.  Mechanically functional. Bore is mostly bright with some old dust and visible rifling.

Condition: Fair.  Barrel has a dark blue patina with some scattered rust and oxidation.  Stock snows numerous repairs but does not currently exhibit major damage.  Action is functional, will operate better with care.  Bore is dark with some dusty rust and oxidation.
